4-0 out of 5 stars Reason it is the same material
To the other reviewer's point, there is a reason that this collection features the "same old shows" that have been kicking around for years, etc. If you read the Encylopedia of Old-Time Radio, you'll see that tapes of the other shows have not been found to date -- the only ones out there are from the later Hollywood shows, not the New York shows with the original cast. Rumors have circulated for years that the tapes are being hoarded somewhere ... but at any rate, these are the ones that are available, until more are discovered.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another Scam Perpetrated on Us OTR Fans
Here again we have the same shows that have been kicking around for decades hugely over-priced to make yet ANOTHER buck out of someone else's work. There is nothing new here so don't waste your money.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!
After being out of print for a long time I Love A Mystery returns. This set is an excellent representation of Carlton E. Morse's radio series. The set of 20 CDs contains the following programs:

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction I have been looking for.
This is absolutely the perfect book for someone wanting to learn (or learn about) ballet. I have seen the other ballet books out there. Most of them are either too simplistic (showing pictures of various pretty moves without telling you how to do them) or too abstract. This book strikes the ideal balance. It is practical and thorough. It doesn't assume any prior experience in ballet, but goes from square 1 to a quite advanced level. It takes you through the same logical sequence of moves that all dancers learn. It offers tons of tips and inside information that only ballet dancers know. It's very well written and easy to read. The expert authors are knowledgeable, patient, and VERY FUNNY. (A laugh on every page -- I didn't expect that added bonus.). And it has what seems like about a million beautiful photographs illustrating each move in great detail.I can't say enough great things about this book. It's the book I've been waiting for. Buy it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars book for everyone
We get more aware of our age at the time of retirement. Switching from a daily-work routine to a totally new idea of all-time-holidays is often not as pleasurable as we expected thirty or more years before. At that difficult time, it is very helpful to focus on the Four Pillars of Longevity as suggested by the authors of the book. The book provides some good medical background for these readers that like to understand why certain things are happening. Search the net for more FREE info

5-0 out of 5 stars Into The Twilight Zone...Anywhere !
These are some of the original T.Z. episodes re-written especially for 'radio'.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great new twist on a classic!!
These radio dramas are so cool!!I recieved a free sample cd from the creators and really loved what I heard. I for sure wanted to own all of them for my long commute. As the reviewer earlier said..the sample cd I recieved had "commercials". I knew I would not pay for advertising so I called the company to ask if the ones I would purchase would be add free. They informed me that the newer 10 cd volumes did not have commercials. Well I just recieved the 1st three 10 cd volumes from Amazon this week and can vouch for the no commercials fact. From what they said the smaller pack versions have commercials.
2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of advertisements in these recordings
These stories are well done but what they neglect to mention is that there are advertisements 2 to 3 times per episode. A major flaw. When I pay for a recoeded story I don't want to have to forward through the ads. So be warned if you don't like advertising in your listening experience don't buy these!!! ... Read more

John Fiske takes us into the television world that we take for granted. He analyzes such aspects as Professional Wrestling, Dallas, daytime soap operas, M.A.S.H., the A-team, Miami Vice, Magnum p.i. and Saturday NightLive. He incorporates magazines(Playboy, Vogue), movies (Rambo, Mad Max)and famous celebrities (Madonna). He even looks into game shows such as theFamily Feud, and The New Price is Right. He takes a look into the whiteculture of American media in order to examine televisions influence inpopular culture. He explores the questions of why mass population consumesthis form of cultural industry. He answers such questions as, who watcheswhat programs and why? How does televisions become so aborted into sociallives? Fiske explores the cultural process in which gives these show theirmeanings. It is an interesting and enlightening insight. It is useful whenexploring other sociological theories relating to mass media and popularculture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for copywriters and storytellers
Paul Harvey is a master at condensing the essence of a story into a few short paragraphs. These transcripts of his popular syndicated radio program serve as great models for anyone looking to create intriguing little stories for business presentations and sales letters. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating stuff
I read this book about 15 years ago and was delighted to find it on amazon. This is a keeper, one that you can browse through over and over again. It contains stories of little known aspects of the lives of very well known people and is rather like an encyclopaedia based on People magazine. The element of surprise at the end gives a delightful twist to each story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden History
As Napoleon indicated, History is the lies upon which we've all agreed. There is no such thing as a work of history that doesn't leave some important element out.Partly that's to make history more palatable for a new generation -- who really wants to know about dentistry in the Colonial era when we're reading about George Washington and his false teeth? No matter what the reason, though, once an item is left out of history it tends to disappear permanently.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection of old-time radio's best detectives
This is a 20-CD set of ten of the best detective radio programs of the 1940's and 50's. There are four episodes for each of the programs (two per CD). This set also includes a small 32-page booklet that gives a brief history of each show and some info on each of the episodes included.Makes a nice companion to "Old Time Radio's Greatest Mysteries" (another 20 CD anthology from Radio Spirits). Here's a list of the programs and the included episodes and airdates:

This is a compilation of two of Prairie Home Companion's famous joke shows. The single cassette is filled with about an hour of rapid-fire, mostly short jokes.Content varies from fun but silly knock knock jokes and puns, to more adult topics such as doctor, lawyer, light bulb, and relationship jokes.Nothing too bold or dirty, just some old fashioned fun with at least a few memorable one-liners for everyone.A nice mix of rolling eye groans and belly laughs.I often had to rewind to catch the joke that was proceeding during my laughter at the previous one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
This book (textbook) is an excellent resource for just about everything in TV. The disk included is a great utility to have for printing out your own contracts. I only with this book could be updated, say, every two years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stolen 3 times... This book is hot!!!
This book is so hot that it's been stolen from my office library 3 times. I'm on my 4th purchase of this book. I felt like I could have an intellegent conversation about any aspect of the television business after using this book. It is my main resource for getting quick answers that are easy to understand. This is required reading for those getting started and a great resource for those that have been in the industry a while. It also includes a computer disk containing forms such as U.S. Copyright registration and others found in the book that you can import to your word processor.5-0 out of 5 stars Imagine the Future, Study the Past

4-0 out of 5 stars THE Classic Shortwave book - needs updating, however
Absolutely fascinating introduction to shortwave radio listening...well written by someone very passionate and knowledgable about the subject! Not just a collection of dry facts about DXing but filled with Mr. Helms' personal stories and experiences that really make the subject come alive! It's all covered:Shortwave, AM/FM/TV DXing, Ham radio, maritime/utility broadcasting...it's all here. Now, why I am giving this book a "four" rather than a "five star" rating; this classic text BADLY needs an update as it was written in 1993.For example, I did catch myself wondering if stations really do still mail out QSL cards in this "online" day and age, and the section on using BBS is really very dated.Mr. Helms...if you happen to read this review, PLEASE consider revising/updating this CLASSIC BOOK - the Shortwave Listening Community will love you for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars great introduction
This 1993 book is packed full of information still relevant to the hobby. It has helped me, a new shortwave listener, explore and get he most out of my new interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly-written, thoughtful, and comprehensive guide
This is the ultimate hybrid of reference book andpage-turner, thanks to Harry Helms' superb writing style. Prose is liquid, even in the sections that have a lot of reference information. Absolutely recommended. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Refund Requested
I have read all four of Sarah Vowell's books. I believe that is all of them. I thoroughly enjoyed three of them and would strongly recommend them. With for Radio On, her first book, she seems to be in a different place. Radio On is a diary of Sarah listening to the radio. Although the concept is interesting, the result is a lot of very short entries in which there is little opportunity to develop anything. But the real reason I didn't like Radio On is because of Sarah's perspective at that time. She is a very critical person in this book. Nirvana is the greatest band ever, and The Grateful Dead is worthless. Whether it is music, politics, or a variety of other topics, you get the clear impression that her opinion is right and any others are wrong. Radio On is a very mean and negative view of life and our world. The worst case scenario, though, is someone reads Radio On first and doesn't read Sarah Vowell's other books. That would be huge mistake.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is great if you like pompous, pretentious, pseudo-intellectuals!
I love "This American Life". I love "The Incredibles". I hate Sarah Vowell. She is rude and mean, and I wonder what gives her the right to think she is so much better than all those mass-cultured, uneducated people she scorns so much. I'm a 20-something, college educated, art-loving female punk musician from New York City (have I impressed you yet, Sarah??), and I am certainly unimpressed by Sarah Vowell's ability to randomly name-drop and brag about the artists, musicians, and authors she likes. Her condescending tone and mundane analyses of life leave much to be desired. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who actually knows a thing about art, music, or life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Obviously her first book
Being a great fan of Sarah Vowell's, I have read all of her books."Radio On" is my least favorite. However, it is her first book, so I cut her some slack for that.It is interesting enough to get through without a struggle, but it does not leave you wanting more, the way her other books do.The book has an interesting premise (it's basically her journal of one year of radio listening), but the format quickly becomes tiring. It makes you think that you could write a book, too.You can tell how young Vowell was when she wrote this, and while I too was a Nirvana fan in the mid-90's, her obsession with the band and Kurt Cobain in particular is distracting and does not add anything to the book. The book seems all the more dated in this era of satellite radio & podcasts. We no longer have to listen to bad radio, and you don't need to read a book about it.Skip this one and buy "Assassination Vacation" instead - Vowell's writing is much wittier and you get a history lesson as a bonus! ...
