5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Amazing
I have seen many a musical, including Monty Python's Spamalot, the 25th Annual Putnam Co. Spelling Bee, Kiss Me Kate, Flower Drum Song, etc.. and I have to say that Millie is still and will probably always be my favorite. The music is just so fun. I don't know any other way to describe it.My personal favorite to listen to: the Speed Test. My personal favorite to sing along with: a toss up between I Turned the Corner and Gimme Gimme.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Thoroughly Modern Millie!
I am in love with this musical!! The music is spectacular, the soundtrack is amazing and the movie is cute and spunky with the fabulous Julie Andrews. I was very excited when I found out that the sheet music to Thoroughly Modern Millie was available and I just had to get it!! If you like musicals or 1920's jazz, you will defiantely love this musical!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Musical Ever!
Thoroughly Modern Millie is absolutely amazing! Any young actor, or anyone who has been living a smalltown life that is just a touch too small for their taste will be able to relate with Millie's character as she moves from a small town in Kansas to New York City to become rich and make it big. The music is fantastic, my personal favorites are "Only in New York", "long as I'm Here With You", and "Forget About The Boy", but I love them all. It's an incredible modern style musical, but with a nice flashback to the 1920s. If you love jazz, musicals, or just a great family comedy, this is the musical for you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the Hook and Get this Book
I found Michael Pollock's Musical Improv Comedy an excellent compilation of technique, theory, and practical exercises explained in a way that is easy to understand for those of us with no previous musical training. Pollock has that rare ability of being able to connect with boththe advanced performer and the beginner -both will find his work valuable and relevant- especially with regard to understanding the craft of musical improv and applying the creative skills. The book's format is clear, well-structured, fun and easy to move through. Each chapter includes concrete examples and exercises for practice. The practice CD deserves special recognition, as it makes the learning process even more compelling and truly enjoyable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, inspiring and highly, highly readable.
I really couldn't recommend this book highly enough - Michael Pollock is one of those rare people whose genius at what he does is equalled by his genius at teaching it.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Easiest and Most Complete Resource I've Found
I teach Children's Comedy Theatre in North Hollywood. We have been doing improvised singing for a long time and I've always wanted a nice easy resource to use when teaching people how to create a song on the spot. This book is it.Not only is it VERY simple to follow and an excellent source of information, it also contains a CD that will be a fixture in my teaching for ages to come.If anyone has ever improvised a song, played music, or just wanted to be able to think quicker on their feet, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This book is very thorough and a great read.Detailed and not boring.I highly recommend it for any aspiring film composer, there is a lot of information in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and frank
Concise description of the various aspects of a career in composing scores for films. Clear and useful outline of the technical components of working in the film score world. Good discussion of the business aspects as well. Interviewws with different composers and agents gives a sober but realistic look at working in the upper levels of the business. Not as much discussion of the intermediate and lower levels where most people will find themselves, at least at the start of their careers. Well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory guide
A great introductory guide to scoring films. Davis explains all the various film music jargon, the roles of music editors and producers (among others) and what royalties you are entitled to. Also covered is the history of film music, what techniques you use to synchronize the action, how to strike deals, the importance of personal relations, et.c. I found it to be an enlightening guide that gave me the answers I was looking for. The language is dry for the most part, but easy to read and learn from. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating (If Implausable) Musical
A Chorus Line is what many people (with the exception of this reviewer) considers the best musical ever written. I feel that the best musical ever written wa Chorus Line's original Tony award competitior, Chicago (which alas, won no awards that year.) That isn't to say that I don't like the show. I think it has one of the best musical books ever written and some nice songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good but not worth the price!
C'mon! A chorus Line is THE best musical ever written! Now you can have the chance to own a wonderfully published script to this amazing music.I also suggest buying the cd to the musical to go with the script. It's just a pity that this script can not encapsulate the performances of the original cast as well. But I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.But you can buy this script...and for a severely discounted price!...Congratulations.Jump at this deal immediately. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inappropriate Review
I only say that the review titled, "Some Fantastic Unknown Songs!" is inappropriate, because those are NOT the songs in this volume. I bought this volume thinking I would get the songs like "Moonfall" and "Unusual Way," but I didn't. This book is great don't get me wrong; I'll still get a lot out of it. Just don't read reviews thinking they are totally accurate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good selections , EXCELLENT accompaniments!
Even after a year of heafty exploring in the genre of musical theatre, I feel as though I have only brushed the first layer off and have dozens more to go. PErhaps this is why I can't appreciate this more. The book's not bad at all, I just don't know most of these songs!
5-0 out of 5 stars A great series
It's best to purchase all 3 of each anthology - I find Vol. 2 to be the best selection, but since each song is in the original key, it's a far cry from the pablum of typical "vocal selections" available. The only drawback - all the good audition pieces are showing up in these, and now everything's getting overused!:P ... This was the required text book for a class in musical theater in college.I found it informative but lacked many details that I would have like to have known.

overall a nice book covering the Bway Musicals. I happened to purchase one for a friend who attends the theater (both Broadway and off-Broadway) religiously and she was very happy with the gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Harvard Course in a Nutshell
I took Professor Thomas Kelly's "First Nights: Five Performance Premieres" class at Harvard, and it was an amazing experience. His lectures were loosely based off of this book, and always garnered curious visitors in the lecture hall. While I didn't read the book during the course, because the material was repetitive with his lectures, I read all of it in anticipation for the final, and it was as if Professor Kelly was giving a personal lecture to me, all without leaving the comfort of my room. It is well written, well researched, anecdotal without being too convoluted, and entertaining, most importantly! I highly highly recommend this book! I am looking forward to reading his First Nights at the Opera book soon. If you ever have a chance to visit Harvard, do come by to listen to one of his lectures (Fall semester, Tu/Th at 10 AM in Sanders Theater)

4-0 out of 5 stars A Coffee Table Book You Should Actually Read
It's easy as a listener to get caught up in the impact of great music on us today and to ignore the people who brought it about in the first place.Kelly has done a wonderful job of enlightening and enlivening my experienceof these five works, four of which I've spent a lot of time with over theyears. He brings together stories on the composition, the culturalsetting, and the nuts and bolts of putting on the first performances in away that both academics and popular readers will appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Insights into Old Favorites
This book brings together an extraordinary amount of interesting information about 5 of the greatest works of Western music, in the context of trying to recreate their first performances.Kelly writes with theinterest of an enthusiast, but the scholarly background is immense, asbefits a university press book.Plenty of interesting illustrations anddiagrams, and interesting pull-quotes in boxes, break up the text, enhancing readability.I had not previously been aware that the versionheard at the first concert of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique was subjectedto significant rewriting before being published in the form performed today-- this is typical of the interesting insights the book adds to commonknowledge. Also, that Berlioz changed the selection of wind instruments, but that one can hear many of the originals on some recent recordings. Myonly disappointment was that Kelly stopped at 5 works - I would love asimilar work-up of first performances of the Wagner Ring Cycle, Mozart'sFigaro, and a major work of Mahler - perhaps the first performance of the8th Symphony.I guess that just means that Kelly might profitably preparea sequel! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Details!
You really can read this book cover to cover...or the information on each song's background can stand alone. If you're interested in modern musical history, you won't want to miss this.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable book for those who love the standards.
America's Songs is a wonderful source of fascinating information on the lyricists and composers of the great standards.Anyone who loves those songs will find this book invaluable.Writers Furia and Lasser have produced a tour de force.

5-0 out of 5 stars America's Songs
A delightful journey inmelodic nostalgia. Philip Furia and Michael Lasser use their long experience with American popular music to tell us with insight and humor how more than 600 songs dating from 1910 to 1977 came to be written, how they were received, how they touchedAmerican culture. The surprise for the reader is the discovery of how many of the songs linger in one's memory, how many of the words one can recall, how many of the tunes one can still sing. Then the message of the place of the songs in American life comes home, how much they say about the way we lived.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate keyboard reductions
Like most of Schwartz's published music, the selections included in this collection are scored well for voice and keyboard alone. The vocal line in never interpolated into the accompaniment figure, allowing the pianist to have much more fun than is often the case with coma-inducing boom-chick reductions.Because of this, the aspiring pianist may have a more difficult time reading the music than his/her trained counterpart, but none of the music should prove overly demanding for anyone who has seriously studied the instrument. The music feels great under the fingers, and-as is the case with most of Schwartz's scores-proves to be a good study in rock/pop pianism.
5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!
Im actually in a production of this play right now, and theres only one thing better than listening to the cd, and its seeing it! I highly recommend this and my other favorite Schwartz show Godspell. My favorite song is "The Wasteland" not because thats my solo, but because its a brilliantly written piece of music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children of Eden
I saw the actual play 2 times and loved it both times granted i saw it at my high school with our own cast performing it. But the songs were still awesome and that intern inspired me to purchase the CD, Some of my favorite songs are :"In Pursuit of Excellence", "The Wasteland","Spark of Creation", "The Naming","Generations", "Ain't it good", "The PerfectDay", "Piece of Eight" well lets just say that i loved themall. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great sheet music!
A great book of sheet music, and very promptly delivered; it only took around 1 week to arrive!5-0 out of 5 stars liked this book
Klaus Badelt is one of my favorite composers. While this is not my favorite among his work (I was looking for sheet music for The Time Machine) This book is very good.It contains one lone grand staff for piano playing. The songs range in difficulty. The book is very well made and lies flat with ease and without breaking. The songs contained in this book are "The Medallion Calls" "The Black Pearl" "Blood Ritual/Moonlight Serenade" "Underwater March" "To the Pirates' Cave!" and "He's a Pirate".

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Caribbean, love!
Never before have I been so pleased with a movie soundtrack music book before. This is really great. The pieces are probably a little advanced for most people, but if you know the music, it's not hard to figure out.It has every theme you'd want to play.Very, very, good! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Full Vocal Score (which lacks instrumental cues)
This is the full vocal score to Sondheim's controversial "Assassins."The inside cover notes that the score has been prepared from Sondheim's copies rather than Starobin's orchestrations, and this is obvious as there are no instrumental cues present (this is my only complaint about this score).A breakdown of the 8 person (plus optional bass) ensemble the show is orchestrated for is included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who but Sondheim???
Only Stephen Sondheim would dare to write a musical which took as its topic Presidential assassinations. What could have been depressing is, through the power of Sondheim's music and Weidman's book, transformed into an intriguing foray into the minds of the disturbed people who committed murder, and (this is the creepy part) committed it with a clear conscience. The music is phenomenal - an amalgam of John Philip Sousa, Stephen Foster, and Sondheim's unique brand of spiky, bittersweet harmonies. The book, by John Weidman, makes quite a few insightful observations on the twisted motivations of the Assassins. But it's Sondheim's hypnotic score that draws one back again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a score!
This is, in my opinion, Sondheim's greatest musical to date. The score, although shorter than most of his, contains some of his wittiest lyrics: 'Or we'd have been left / Bereft / Of F.D.R.!', and some of the greatesttunes ('The Gun Song' is a personal favourite). Sondheim cleverly uses themarches of John Philip Sousa to evoke the ironic feeling of patriotism in atale about presidential assassins. He also pastiches the music of AaronCopland in many numbers. The combination of these styles and composersprovides a truly American atmosphere, which, when heard out of context makewonderful songs, but in context of the show carry a deeper underscore ofmenace. Whether you're intending to produce the show or you just want toown a piece of Sondheim history, this score is a must! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Back for a revival
The biggest Broadway hit is coming back this Fall, and the book that tells the story of how it was created back in the mid 70s has come back for a revival as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST for any "A Chorus Line" enthusiast.
Viagas, Lee and Walsh, together with the rest of the original cast have made an insightful book which documents the life of this great musical. Filled with remembrances by the cast and with a good collection of photographs by several photographers their book is a treasure chest of facts and memories of Broadway's "Singular Sensation". It is nice to know that author Baayork Lee continues her association with the show after twenty five years, still directing companies of the show and now opening up a website dedicated to the show... I only hope that some day they will provide an updated version concluding with the gala final performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any fan of the show (or Broadway in general)
This book captures the show perfectly from people who were there:The Original Cast. This book never ceases to amaze, and move. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great But Slow
I love this movie!!So I ordered this book!I wanted it to come soon. However, it was very late.It was past the estimated delivery date. However, once it came I was obsessed with playing with it!This is a MUST BUY!!! Only if you love the movie/musical RENT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Getting
I got this book over the already published vocal selections of RENT because I noticed that this book has more selections in it.Since I don't have the original book of vocal selections, I really can't compare them- I have to speak of its own merits.I am satisfied with my purchase. The melody is written into the piano part, so that will help singers sing along. If, however, you are doing a performance, you may want a version without the melody in the piano's part... I am not sure if the other book has this or not.The book is quite thick- 150 pages. There are also 8 pages of beautiful photos from scenes in the movie: RENT, One Song Glory, Light My Candle, Tango Maureen, Halloween, Today 4 U, La Vie Boheme, et cetera.

(Footloose), Miss Marmelstein (I Can Get it For You Wholesale), Always a Bridesmaid (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change), I'd Give My Life for You (Miss Saigon), With One Look (Sunset Boulevard), Teaching Third Grade (Ruthless), and My New Philosophy (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown). This book has over 40 songs, none of which are useless. If you are a female who enjoys singing Broadway, get this! You won't be sorry. *Amazon. com has the lowest price I've found for this item!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for B-way Style Tenors- Touching & Fun Songs!
Although the ranges are specifically for tenors, these songs can be enjoyed by all! Some standouts are Alone at a Drive in Movie (Grease), A Bit of Earth (The Secret Garden), I Believe in You (How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying), I Only Want to Say (Jesus Christ Superstar), Miracle of Miracles (Fiddler on the Roof), She Loves Me (She Loves Me), Sit Down You're Rocking The Boat (Guys and Dolls), This is the Moment (Jekyll and Hyde), Why God Why? (Miss Saigon), and Winter's on the Wing (The Secret Garden). All in all, these are a bunch of fantastic selections that will show off a singer's vocal range as well as technique. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Gilbert and Sullivan, librettist and composer, were classically Victorian gentlemen whose comic operas for the Savoy Theater under impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte have endured down to the present day despite the disappearance of the British imperial world which they lampooned. Theirs was a happy combination of Sullivan's cheerily catchy tunes and Gilbert's witty lyrics which captured the comedy of universal human nature. Ian Bradley, annotator of an earlier Gilbert and Sullivan collection, completes and updates the record with the inclusion here of the last collaborations of the two, and new introductions to the operettas that reflect modern interpretations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for G&S fans
Though sung in English, it can be difficult to understand the words of G&S operas without libretti. I listen to the CDs while following along in this book, and it has greatly increased my pleasure in G&S, as well as my admiration for both Gilbert's witty and insightful lyrics and the way Sullivan carries the words along with his music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why, damme, it's too bad!
$42.00?? C'mon now, this is a paperback for pity's sake! I would have no problems with the price if this book really had enough information contained to make it worthwhile. Basically it consists of the librettos of all the G & S (Thespis excluded. so how is it so darn complete?) operas on the right-hand page, with notes etc. on the left page. In all fairness the notes are on the exhaustive side, but without an index it become a chore to find anything revelant to which you may want to apply them. Coupled with some perfunctory introductions I can't in fairness give this more than 3 stars. Perhaps a bio of the respective librettist & composer would have come in handy, as well as a few illusrations showing productions of the operas over the years; would make me harp less about the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gilbert And Sullivan Bible
This book is the ultimate source for information on all things Gilbert and Sullivan. Written for a contemporary audience, it has a plethora of background info on the productions of the Savoy operas, the singers who originated the roles, the translations to some of the meaning of the words in the lyrics (which were inside jokes back in the time of Gilbert and Sullivan:1870-1900 and a history of performances throughout the 20th century. There are profiles and biographies of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan as well as Richard D'Oyly Carte. William Gilbert was a playwright, poet and writer for the satirical magazine Fun. His comic style of writing came to its full powers when he wrote the lyrics and libretti for all the light operas he conceived. Arthur Sullivan was a serious English composer, who at the time was probably competing against the bigger names of Elgar, Ralph Vaughn Williams or Benjamin Britten. Arthur Sullivan wrote English equivalent for German Lieder as Victorian drawing room songs, as well as symphonies and concerti. The Irish Symphony and the Program Music- The Tempest are his most acclaimed. Gilbert and Sullivan were not always a perfect match. Their personalities were distinctly different. Gilbert was humorous, witty, playful and always catering to popular tastes. Arthur Sullivan was intellectual, artistic, serious and introverted. All his life he was unable to step out of the fame he got for the light operas he wrote with Gilbert. He wanted the fame of the serious music composer and not just the silly light operas he made so popular in what was at the time the ancestor of today's Armerican Broadway- the Savoy.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than you'd think!
The Secret Garden treads a fine line between soppy and gritty and does it pretty well. Although some of the lyrics are not very good, the score has some very nice moments, and there are a couple of songs likely to appeal to many people, not just young girls. Most of the songs are relatively difficult in one way or another.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Collection of Songs
This book isn't dummed down for the novice player, however it is quite an amazing collection of songs. As soon as I bought the CD, I knew I had to have this book to play the songs for myself. Unfortunetly, the publishers have it listed as a hard cover edition, when it isn't. Still, well worth the wait.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of Purchasing
Being a fan of this musical, I decided to purchase the sheet music as well.I have not regretted this decision. The songs included were some of the best ones (though it is so hard to choose the best ones from this musical!).I only wish there could have been room for the whole score! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AIDA is Amazing!
An absolutly incredible book. Songs range from standard vocal and accompmniment, to a full five lines for harmonies if you desire.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aida songbook
This book is very thorough, includes most all of the songs from the show. Chords are provided for less advanced musicians, but the piano score is quite difficult - not for beginners! Intermediates will be able to play about half the songs easily. True to the soundtrack, and all the parts are provided as well as the lyrics and details about which character is singing. Love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good!!!
This book is excellent - it contains piano music for most of the songs in the musical, and the transcriptions are largely faithful to the very pianistic Broadway score. All of the songs are complete, containing the piano versions of the instrumental solos found in the actual score. It also has guitar chords and lyrics for singers, with a separate line for the singers' notes, complete with harmonies.Unlike many Broadway music books, this one is very thorough and does not disappoint!!! Although that playing some songs in their entirety may be a difficult task for beginning pianists, the result of playing the music from this great musical is well worth the effort, and I'm sure that pianists and singers of all levels will enjoy this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars RENT OBC vs. RENT the movie vocal selections
This is a great vocal selection book, however, it only has 12 songs. RENT the movie vocal selections has 18. The music is pretty much the same in both, even though some of the words are changed in the movie book. I think the movie selection book is only $1 more and it's well worth it. If you are a hardcore RENThead like me though, you may prefer the OBC (original broadway cast) vocal book because it is more true to Jonathan Larson's original production.

5-0 out of 5 stars Song by song from a piano expert
