5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS STUFF!
Springsteen fans have been very lucky as of late as he has been putting out more and more product. While non-fans may wonder what all the fuss is about, let's face it, if there is one rock ledged who is sorely lacking in the way of specialty releases, it's the Boss. How nice then to finally see things like the '75 London concert DVD and CD released last year, a revamped Seeger Sessions disc with songs that popped up on the tour and during rehearsals we otherwise would not have had on the actual release and items like this book and the coinciding "Greetings from E-Street..."
5-0 out of 5 stars good job

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Tribute to a Great Artist.
I am a life long Bruce Springsteen fan, and so, I have become more objective with my opinions of this spectacularly gifted musician. In Dave Marsh's 'Bruce Springsteen on Tour 1968 -2005, the reader is taken deep into the movement that the Boss has set out, transforming American rock n roll, and in many ways putting a kick back into the American music industry. What is most fascinating in this biography is the wonderful and mostly unseen photographs of Springsteen and crew on tour. There are nearly 350 pictures or so, and nearly each of them tells a unique story of the movement that is Bruce Springsteen.

5-0 out of 5 stars What AGreat Trip down E Street !
This book is so much fun! It's sort of a "pop up" book for grown ups. The clever pull-outs, the repros of tickets & ephemera, the old newspaper clippings that show a YOUNG, YOUNG Bruce...it's all good! This is not only a very novel approach, but also an easy to read, informative scrapbook of Springsteen history. The wonderful, plentiful photos and out-takes include some superb shots (including the covers) by Frank Stefanko.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very unique book that i highly recommend if you're a Bruce fan
i concur with the first reviewer - i too thought i had just about every book i could want on Bruce, but this one surpassed my expectations.Don't let the low page count deter you - this one is definitely worth the money. There are a ton of pictures i had never seen before (ones that very likely came from the band members themselves or members of their inner circle) and there are a lot of reproductions of interesting chachkies, clippings, documents, itineraries, setlists, etc. that are in little pockets throughout the book (akin to the inserts you got in the LP of The Who - Live at Leeds). The book begins with Bruce's first bands and goes all the way up to the latest reunion tours. The presentation is excellent - quality printing, binding, and beautiful thick stock slipcase.I paid around $24 for it and i'm extremely pleased - while not a narrative-heavy book like some others that run much longer, i'd rate this as one you'll want to add to your Bruce collection.Hats off to the author.

I'm going to try to make this as helpful as I can without going on excessively. I don't know about you, but I sometimes become belabored by long reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly lavish!
Massive, beautiful and gorgeous. What a treat to finally have a such an incredibly awe-inspiring piece as this to finally compile all of the wonderful works of art that go into what is, was and remains Tennant/Lowe.I have honestly wanted something like this to be produced for decades now, and when I first saw it in the UK, I ordered it there and waited for it for weeks. Now you can have it here quickly and painlessly.Definitely pick up a copy today...if you are even the most casual of fan (and somehow, I sense that if you stumbled across this, you are, as I, far more than that), you are very much deserving of this.Get it and cherish/treasure it for years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Steinway,a place, its people, the piano
Mr. Barron writes a great story.Other books have catalogued the Steinway history, and even how the piano works, but this innovative story adds life to what might otherwise be just an organized mass of metal and wood. The piano has a personality! In the narrative, the reader follows the construction of a single concert grand piano, but in the process we learn so much more by exploring many of the individuals involved in its building, the Steinway family and the workmen who lovingly bend the wood, glue the keys, and make the piano sing. Mr. Barron has not only written a great history of Steinway and the pianos they build, but created a fascinating story of its people. Its a great read for even the non-piano lovers among us. I couldn't put it down from start to finish. (The schematic drawings in the back - the new and the old, are particularly fascinating!)

4-0 out of 5 stars PIANO OR PEOPLE
While I enjoyed this book, it is really much more about people than pianos, and the "common man" at that.Picturesque as they might be,many details about the workers' personal lives could have been spared. For those of us who play pianos but have never taken one apart, a labeled schematic would have been very helpful in understanding the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Piano as a Person
My husband and I enjoyed this book greatly and have found others have enjoyed it as much, if not more.10 days ago as I lay in Intensive Care I ended up discussing the book with the fellow in the Intensive Care bed next to mine.I doubt either of us will ever again find a book that let us take our minds off our intensive pains for that half hour disucssion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always perfect music history~
This time is my 3rd time to but new edition of A History of Western Music. I studied from 5th edition. This new edition is more easy to study. Fully recommended~

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of facts, no analysis
When I found what I believe to be the first edition (from 1960) in a thrift store for $1, I had no idea that this was considered to be the pre-eminent music history textbook.Consequently, I approached it as "pleasure" rather than assigned classroom reading. And I am in full agreement with the assessment that the writing is dry in the extreme - and I admit that I skimmed certain sections rather than reading them all the way through.Compared to the writing of critics such as Donald Tovey, Norman Lebrecht, Alex Ross, Jonathan Saville, or August Kleinzahler, Grout is not "entertaining;" as I explain below, he does not even meet the definition of "critic."
4-0 out of 5 stars A bit dry...

5-0 out of 5 stars can't put it down
i sat in barnes and noble and read about two or three chapters from this book. it easily kept me captivated.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must for music enthusiasts
"Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll's Legendary Neighborhood" is an interesting book in which one learns about the origins of pop-rock music in that there were a great number of bands and musicians that started their careers in a residential area in Los Angeles, California. The book is devoted to contributions of such artists as Frank Zappa, the band known as the Eagles, the band known as the Byrds, and Jimmy Webb, to the genre of music that is known as American rock, and with some artists/bands, there are even interviews in which they chronicle what it was like to perform in those days. Michael Walker also shares with readers a little bit of information on the history of cocaine as it was not only relevant to that time period, but also had something of an influence on the development of this music all the way from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s.

4-0 out of 5 stars the magic of the 60s revisited
For those who continue to debate whether San Francisco or Los Angeles was the epicenter of 60s music, Michael Walker provides the answer. He skillfully paints a multidimensional mural of a fabled time period. Walker uses the unique perspective of a location as metaphysical as it is geographic to describe the musical culture of the 60s and 70s. The magic of those years is deftly captured in Walker's words. He leads us through the twists and turns the canyon takes in the 80s, portraying a location attempting to hold on to its aura long past its prime. All in all a great read, although I wish there had been more stories of the musicians of the 60s. Walker's writing is as colorful and tightly woven as any tie-dyed wall hanging. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The interviews make this book
Streissguth's journalistic approach is a refreshing contrast to the psychological blather of many biographical writers. There is a healthy balance of respect for Johnny Cash and a straightforward look at his extramarital relationships, substance abuse, and devotion to Christianity. Both the complex and simple sides of Cash are revealed through detail-rich interviews with those who knew him well. Indeed, the extensive interviews with band members, friends and family are what make this book so compelling and fresh. For instance, the interview with Rosanne Cash, his eldest daughter, helps us understand Cash's drug addition, his role as a father and the insecurities he experienced as a performer. The Man in Black has never been revealed in such color and light.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review from friend and minister, Rev. Jack Shaw
JOHNNY CASH The Biography... is so much more than just another `Johnny Cash' book. As I began reading it, I quickly found myself wishing that this remarkable resource had been available before I met John. I believe that it would have better equipped me to... `Understand'.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh look at Johnny and his life
I found the book to be a great read.More than just the same rehash of his life that I have read before.Streissguth has broken new ground in his telling of the Johnny Cash story. He brings important players--such as brotherRoy Cash and former manager Saul Holiff--out of the shadows, traces the roots of various Cashian myths and offers new insights throughout.Fits the bill for Cash fans and newcomers alike.Great photos, too.The following passage is an example of the new perspective that the book delivers: "Drug use became Cash's convenient sin, the one that made for a great redemption story but that had no visible victims other than himself. As long as the drug-obsessed media focused on his addiction, the story functioned as a smoke screen.Cash rarely had to deal publicly in any substantive way with questions about extramarital affairs he engaged in during the 1970s and 1980s or with the pain that he'd brought upon his wives, daughters, friends, and band members."

5-0 out of 5 stars Pink Floyd - The Book
If you're a fan of Pink Floyd for their music, you'll probably love this book. I think a lot of the people reviewing this book are forgetting that it was put together by a rock and roll drummer. The book may not go terribly deep into the psychological nuonces of the group, but it sure does lay out one hell of a collection of images for you to make what you will of their career. This book is kind of like looking through Nick Mason's photo album and reading captions he wrote to remind himself of what was going on in the pictures. The text won't let you in on the stuff you would've missed by not being there, but the photos give you a glimpse of his memories and experiences. Don't treat this book as a Pink Floyd biography, it's best viewed as a giant booklet included in a giant box set, the box set being Pink Floyd's entire musical career (which most people buying this book probably already own).

1-0 out of 5 stars Need a microscope to read the text!
This would have been a great book if they had made it into a larger format and made the text legible! The type is so small it's nearly impossible to read. I'm returning it because it's useless to me as-is.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Floyd Fans
I must admit I have not read a book (novel, biography, etc.) in some time, so this was my re-entry into the literary world. We are not dealing with Pulitzer prize stuff here, but at times I found it hard to put down. While it definitely helps if you are a Pink Floyd fan, the book is a very interesting look at the hard work it takes(with some dumb luck thrown in) to reach the top of the world of rock and roll. The book is rather amusing at times, but unless you are up on British humor, I suspect some it, like I, you will simply "not get". It would also have been nice to dive into the "characters" a bit more. I feel I know the band members a bit better now, but no where near what I expected. Instead of some of the tedious devotion left to technical aspects (lighting, sound, etc.) a little more personal study would have been nice. But I suspect Mr. Mason was being careful and did not what to hurt feelings or create bad will. He definitely did not do that, but it makes sense since that was the role he seemed to have with the band all along. So if you are a fan of classic, progressive rock, or Pink Floyd, is it quite worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The different types of music are explained in this reference manual
Beautifully illustrated. Each type of music is traced back to its beginnings--how and when it first was developed.Explains what specifically makes this music different from other types of music.Very interesting and useful information!A very good reference manual that gives you an excellent foundation to music.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good for Music Appreciation text
I've used this book for three years and am eager to trade it for something else.Why?1) Musical examples are chosen seemingly because Yudkin got tired of the tried-and-true favorites (Bach Brandenburg Concerti are not on the student CD set, but the St. Matthew Passion is.As a result, the students may get to hear Bach Brandenburg Concerti in class but can't listen on their own).Same is true for Verdi:Otello is included, but not Rigoletto or La Traviata? 2) This text is written for the average music major (not stellar, just average), rather than a music appreciation student. He assumes much greater knowledge of instruments, timbre, texture, and familiarity with general musical terms than any introductory student will have.3) An exasperating dilemma:many works on the instructor CD set are not on the student set, despite those being the better selections. Why not put the obscure works on the instructor CDs, and let students have access to really great works? For example, when he selected a recording of a madrigal, he picked one that has two females singing a verse, then two males singing a verse...nothing at all like 95% of all madrigals students would ever be likely to hear. The reason? He knows the performers on the CD!Students never get to hear real text painting as every "real" madrigal illustrates. It's hard to build on that when asking students to understand the concept of text painting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bad Vibrations
Hopefully this is the final book on a genius, Brian Wilson. There's not much more to say and this book's fault is it may say it in much too much detail.Brian Wilson, founder of the Beach Boys and brilliant composer/arranger begins a descent into drugs and mental illness.Everyone knows the story. What this book does is not tell the surface story but rather give every detail of virtually every song written as well as the band member relationships focusing mainly on the dysfunction.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on Brian Wilson to date

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hard Book To Put Down, A Joy To Read
This is a great book for any Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan. As a hardcore fan like myself you may want more detail but he points out other sources like Timothy White's book "The Nearest Faraway Place" where he drew information and where I am headed next after finishing this one. You really end up feeling like you know Brian Wilson and his bandmates after reading this. You get a real picture of what happened- this is extremely fluid- really well done. There are a few areas that would have been nice to have more detail on, like David Marks for example, although he is interviewed here. The book is good enough though that I would buy the next edition which I hope might include the reunion of Wilson/Love/Jardine/Marks/Johnston on the rooftop of Capital Records recently and the Wilson/Jardine reunion for the mini Pet Sounds tour. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Did you know Keith Richards did drugs?
Beware: if you want to know anything about the MUSIC on "Exile on Main Street," this is not the book for you. There is virtually no discussion of the actual 13 songs that were recorded during the "Exile" sessions.Instead, the vast majority of this book is about drug use in France and the sexual tension between Keith Richards, Anita Pallenberg, Mick Jagger and everybody else who lived at Nellcotte during this period.I was disappointed as I thought the book would be about the recording process and the songs. However, if you want an in-depth look at the various "hangers-on" in the Stones camp at this time, or an insider look at Keith Richards' drug use during the early 70's, this is the book for you (and I mean INSIDE...many pages are devoted solely to Richards' rehab treatment in Sweden and the process of getting him there from LA). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 2006 version
As a general history intended for the academic market, Bonds's contribution ranks as a formidable contender with K Stolba's and Grout/Palisca's works. Visually appealing with many period paintings, illustrations and tables in color, the book also entertains with well-written text which illuminates the cultural context of developing genres.

5-0 out of 5 stars What'd I Say? I say "fantastic."
Had it not been for Ahmet Ertegun and his family moving from Turkey to America, more than 75% of the music that would come out over the time afterward would never had come to be and the musical mainstream would dramatically have never been the same.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have!!
Ahmet Ertegun what a Important figure in the Music Business? the Guy truly knew His stuff at making a label Important.just His Association with Ray Charles&Aretha Franklin alone speaks volumes to me.He had a strong Idea of what He wanted&He got it.in it's Hey Day Atlantic Records was as Important as Any Other Label then or Now.the one thing you get after reading this Book&Hearing the Atlantic Box Set is that Ahmet Ertegun could vibe with anyone.a Must Have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable!
I had the supreme honor of working for Atlnatic Records as a promotions Manager in the '70s, so I saw first-hand a lot of what's in this book.I saw it through the label, the artists, radio and retail. And lemme tell you, the book is spot-on accurate. The two words that best describe Atlantic Records are sophisticated and engaged, and those characteristics come top-down from the founder, Mr. Ahmet Ertegun, and through all of his management.Read more

Editorial Review

The history of "history"--our changing perspectives on the act of narrating and trying to "recapture" the past--encompasses the most profound seismic shifts in modern consciousness.Once seemingly commonsensical, the science-aspiring ambition of historiography to recount the past "as it actually was" (to borrow Leopold von Ranke's famously misunderstood phase) now betrays anachronistic naivete, if not a dangerous arrogance masquerading as objectivity. And the business of cultural history provides a particularly fascinating--and contentious--index to the larger issues at stake. The very urgency of the debate over "how" to tell the story (and indeed what the story is) continues to intensify in proportion to the uncertainty of our times.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interested in 'Classical Music'? A MUST READ!
This 6-volume history is both entertaining and highly idiosyncratic. For a 'survey', that's an unusual combination, but in this case the idiosyncracies are a great advantage. The reader is treated to a comprehensive tour of Western music, from a cultural perspective infused with brilliant social and political insights. For example, the extended discussion of 'Romanticism' and 'The Folk', with all the psycho-social baggage attendant to the latter is a stunning tour-de-force. You won't agree with all of Taruskin's observations: the charm he finds in Mozart's 'Magic Flute' (with its high dose of 'Das Volk') falls flat with me. Mozart wrote several operas head and shoulders above that one, to my ears. But one need not agree with Taruskin to find the journey wondrously edifying.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Work of WorldCulture
This work is amazing in every way, a magisterial survey that has long been needed. It equals Edward Gibbon stylistically for starters. It is a model for all such historicalworks in the arts: music, poetry etc. We need such surveys of the arts by a single person. The section on Britten gets him absolutely right and "Max" is a hoot (Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of the Queen of Britain's Music since 2002). One problem is that the Index is in typography that is too small for easy reading. I also cannot see the value in the hardcover despite the work's brilliance. This work far surpasses Lang, the prior survey, now very outdated with new knowledge and discoveries. One omission is that the author does nto deal with non European and US "western" music (eg in China, Japan, Australia, South America etc) but you can't have everything. A paperback is urgently needed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Taruskin *****, Oxford *
Oxford gets two very black eyes for this one. Here are five magnificent textbooks for graduate music-history classes. But they can't be ordered separately: myclass of 15 are sharing a single library copy of vol. 4 (and lapping it up).

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 Live Crue!
I only listen to music that I can do The Sprinkler to. Testify! (And I don't mean a literal sprinkler, like the Crue did in Hotel rooms and fruit bowls). But Motley Crue does heavy metal. So what does this fan of rap and GQ sweatsuits (me) think of these frazzled tomcats? Not much.At least regarding their music. But as writers, they have a certain sizzle! As DJ Spry sampled from the once great Billy Joel, "Honesty is such a lonely word. And mostly what I want from you." These Crue boys bring the honesty uncut, and let it flow like Kristal down the Sunset gutter! My, my, my look what the cat dragged in, STRAIGHT up! Like most rappers, the Crue get more tail than an Addams house cat, write LARGE cliche song hooks, and party. (Nikki gets busy with Prince muse Vanity!). Unlike most rappers, they get into hard drugs and don't dress very dapper or even fly.(The book has lots of pics and full page glossies -- what the?!).And unlike ANY rappers, they write a lot about psychotherapy stuff. Rappers building a commercial empire don't have time for that, nowatimsayn?!! But the Crue are white, and we see that they're human... and every rose has its thorn.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book, didn't even like Motley Crue before this.....
I recommend this book to anybody who is interested on the real life of rock and roll bands who don't burn out and break up after one or two years.Being in a band is like being married to 4 people. It is hard to get along, but they managed to do it without killing each other or themselves. It got hairy at the end between Vince and Tommy, Vince trying to snitch on Tommy to get him thrown back in jail, what a pansy! But from the beginning to the end, there just wasn't any boring spots.I could have done without the "shooting" remarks, I'll let the readers figure that one out.But I just ignore that stuff and stuck to the literary genius these guys put out. Many Kudo's.You will love this book too.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a page turner.
I just loved this book. Neil Strauss and the motley crue boys have a written a masterpiece.

Editorial Review

Though Britain's notorious Sex Pistols shoved punk rock into the face of mainstream America, the movement was already brewing in the U.S. in the 1960s with bands like the Velvet Underground and Iggy and the Stooges. Through hundreds of interviews with forgotten bands as well as the ones that made names for themselves--including Blondie and the Ramones--Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain chronicle punk rock history through the people who really lived it. 5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best rock 'n' roll books out there...
Short and sweet: This book captures pure, primal rock 'n' roll as it was happening and doesn't leave out many details on what was going on backstage. Quite frankly, after reading about all the bizarre antics Iggy Pop was up to in the heyday of the Stooges, I find it hard to believe that he is still alive and kickin'.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...a vast and great history...
PLEASE KILL ME - something from a t-shirt of the day:Imagine walking around a pre-gentrification Manhattan in this?PLEASE KILL ME - an oral history of punk as it evolved in NYC (one of its' real points of origin, along with Detroit) was a long time in the making, and was ultimately well worth the wait.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!
Best oral history book ever. I couln't put it down. Even if you do not like punk or know the history this is a great book. Everyone was so frank and honest. Loved it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Standard
If you're a music student at almost any major school (I just finished my undergraduate at Indiana University, for example) you'll most likely needto take a course that uses these CD's as part of its history survey. Forthat purpose, this set is an excellent collection. These, with theircompanion Norton Anthology of Western Music, and in conjunction withGrout/Palisca's History of Western Music, make for a thorough survey of theroots and history of Western music. Both the History and the Anthology usethese CD's, and make constant references to them. (At least, up until 1750,after which you'll need the second volume)
