4-0 out of 5 stars present at the creation
matthew modine has done us all a service.how can any of us -- unless we are jack nicholson or nicole kidman or tom cruise, etc. -- even imagine the experience of a starring performer's interactions with stanley kubrick?modine has now accounted for his time -- challenging, demanding, demeaning, cold, exhausted, and worse -- in the laserlight.i hope modine's path will be followed by many of the others.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for Full Metal Jacket lovers
One word. WOW.
5-0 out of 5 stars war is hell so is making a movie with Kubrick
A great behind the scenes look at working with one of the all time best directors. Life imitating art and art the way Stanley wants it. this book puts you right in the middle as though you were one of the grunts, or crew who seem to have been treated with the same irreverence by the dictator, I mean director. How do you make your actors show the true emotion of war, put them in hell for a year seems to be what Stanley was thinking. Mathew takes you through the battle and seems to have come out a better person when all is said and done. Stanley surely met his match with Modine, who stood his ground and forged a friendship with the obsessive director through fortitude and moxie. Trying to stay a step ahead of Kubrick at every turn became Modine's MO only to find out the ever elusive director was always two steps ahead of him. The 2 jokes Modine crafted to tell Kubrick during production epitomized the worlds view and Stanley s view of himself. A great read that really takes you into the mind of the man we were so excluded from, and into the mind of a young actor who so early in his career changed him forever. Savas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
great book for his main points regarding the style and elements one should have in the documentary, mostly revolvong around the point of not having too many 'talking head' interviews and 'showing' the point more,,, the book isn't relevant at all regarding technologies, however, as it seems to be written before 1998 or so,,, but it's probably helpful to see everything from the past,,,
3-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful introduction to the world of documentaries
I found this book extremely useful and does as it claims-- covers all aspects of documentary production. Although written intially before NLE, it has adequately been updated to cover NLE. I found the planning part very useful but had to make my own notes to organize the author's thoughts. Otherwise would have deserved 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understandable
This book was an invaluable reference when I found myself (unexpectedly and quite unwillingly) involved in the production of a documentary.I'm a CPA-turned-housemover, and I could understand it.Enough said. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The next required theatre drafting standard text
This is the most complete and practical drafting text book that I have ever read. Not only does it illustrate excellent drafting styles and techniques, it also provides step-by-step instruction on how to create each kind of projection. I believe it raises the bar to all other books exploring this same topic. In my opinion, this book will eventually be included in all classes that prepare students for a professional technical performing arts career. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Warhol scene in their own words
If you don't know much about the Factory scene, this is a great way to introduce yourself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tragic but transcendant
I always noticed this book at my grandmother's place, but didn't recognise the name until last year, and I read this book in a matter of days. Edie's short life, as described in this convoluted biography induces both envy and pity, we envy the beautiful, spoilt celebrity at the centre of a wild hedonistic carnival, who seems to have everything and obey no-one, and we pity the poor lost soul who is used, abused, abandoned and maltreated at every turn. Edie's meteoric rise to instant stardom as the jewel in the crown of the 1960's Warhol empire is as tragic as it is thrilling, and the biography makes you feel every minute of it. This book brought me to tears twice and yet parts of it were so transcendant as to seem surreal, her life is still powerfully bright. The book is still really gripping and moving even though I was born almost three decades after her death and long after the end of the 60's. Somehow at every turn you hope Edie Sedgwick will pull herself together and pull through and you wish that everything told in the book will turn around but it never does, Edie seems to burn out before she'd even become a has-been.
2-0 out of 5 stars a sad story
This book was interesting but it left me sad. First, this book wasn't just Edie's biography. If it had been, it probably would have been so much shorter. It drifted into all sorts of areas (even going as far as to discuss a Sedgwick burial spot in detail even though Edie is not even buried there )and that was boring. It goes way way back into her family tree, pratically does her father's biography, her mother's biography and Warhol's biography, two of her brothers. It seemed the author needed a certain number of pages. Some of the people in the book seemed to embelishing things or lying. I had trouble believing parts of their Edie stories. Some of the people "interviewed" in the book seemed to be still doing hippy slang like Edie's brother John and that just made me laugh. I understand that the book is about Edie and she lived during that time but returning to hippy slang was silly. The 1960's are over, adjust to it. Alot of the book is Edie drug stories. It's really bad because it sounds like it's trying to glamourize that sort of life even though it lead to Edie's down fall. In the end, Edie was a rich preppy girl who bought her friends with her money and bought her way into Warhol films. When her parents began to cut off the money supply and Sedgwick became a big headed diva who actually did think she was had talent enough for mainstream films instead of just paying her way into Warhol films, her friends cut out and all she had left was a few family members who were willing to love her to spite her abuse towards them, her being spoiled, her drug problems and her embarrassing them. Sad story. Edie could have done so much more with her life than wasted it trying to be buy friends and instand fame with Warhol. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good background info ... could use some improvements ...
We used this as our textbook for a course on "The Art of Film" at my university. It's packed with a lot of great detail, obviously written by someone who knows and loves the subject. The problem is that it's not as well organized as it could be.For example, the authors will make a comment along the lines of "there are three important reasons why X works the way it does."Then you spend the next 28 pages trying to find the three reasons (since you KNOW you're going to be tested on this), which are usually buried among a lot of very interesting details.A few well-placed paragraph and sub-paragraph headings would help alleviate the need to play "where's Waldo" with important concepts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Will change how you watch movies!
This is one of the best introductions to film studies. The bulk of the book is about the formal analysis of film, from genre, to editing, staging, sound, and mise-en-scene. Although this is an introductory book, it goes very in-depth into all the formal elements of film-making. All terms are carefully defined with many examples. Film has its own "language," and this book helps readers to understand that language. After reading this book, you will never watch a film in the same way again. It will vastly increase your understanding. The writing is clear, accessible, well-organized, and straightforward. There are also chapters on film production and distribution, and a helpful chapter on film history. Reading a film textbook tends to be an exercise in frustration, since there is so much technical analysis of films that either you haven't seen, or haven't seen recently. The many pictures help with that problem to some extent. The physical size of the book is rather awkward for reading, unless you're sitting at a large desk with the book laid out in front of you. The accompanying CD includes a few very short film clips and some quizzes on the chapter materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for introductory level film students
This book is excellent for the fundemental understanding of film and its various stages. It allows readers to look at films through the eyes of filmmakers and critics alike. It simply allows you to understand how films work, as well as provide a summerized yet thorough hisotry of early film all over the world. The book provides readers with movie titles that are important in the developement and influence for movies today.Overall, the book is worth every penny for those who are looking for a detailed understanding of film and film history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The push you need to make films
This book gave me the final nudge that I needed to go out and make my own films. It is light on the 'technique-side' but there are already enough books on that. What's missing is some inspirational words to muster up the courage as well as some wisdom to make your first filmmaking experience easier and this book fulfills those needs.
4-0 out of 5 stars A mix of inspirational and practical advice
I'm currently enrolled in a university film program. Many of the teachers give a grim forecast of the job market and breaking into the industry. For me, this book was a breath of fresh air.It gives advice from party etiquette to budgeting to breaking through a writing block. All the advice is mixed with humor and interesting tidbits.Through their words, I could feel that the authors love making films. In turn, reading this book made me really exciting about pursuing a career in this field. However, I did feel that a lot of their advice was a matter of common sense. If you're looking for an easy read to get you pumped about working in this industry...this is a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Motivation to Get Out There and Get Creating!
I really enjoyed this book. While I was expecting more of a literal take on the "what they don't teach you at film school" part of the book, I was still pleasantly surprised. The authors really break down the information for you and make it easy to digest. It's truthful and written with a down to earth perspective. When I bought the book I was expecting more focus on technique and "rules" associated with the craft but found it to be more along the lines of a really good pep talk. If you're feeling discouraged or overwhelmed with making your own films this is the book for you, full of very good and practical advice. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood Babylon
I've owned this book before, and the one I had was larger. This one is small and hard to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Demon Brother
I thought Kenneth Anger was so cool. This book gets the dirt on Hollywood's trash, exposing secrets that I never would've guessed. I liked this book a lot. What got to me was whoring out these big celebrities. It is glamorous, but there is also a dark side to Hollywood. Fame comes with a price, everyone has one. Everyone has a price. How low will they go? How low will someone go for some fame? I have made B movies and though most got rejected, I thought it was a joke that I could've made these and that wasn't saying much. Anyone who comes from any background can make it in Hollywood. Keep on saving the rejection letters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but some things never change.
Hollywood is a cesspool of the worst of humanity.Ego, greed, narcissim, hedonism, all of it strains into Hollywood the way lint ends up in the lint trap of a dryer.People have a notion that society today is more corrupt than it was in days gone by but that is a myth. People were simply better at keeping it hidden in times past. Hollywood Babylon was a sensation when it came out for just that reason. It drug out into the light of day what society had known all along - that Hollywood is society's septic tank. And it's so damn fun to read about it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but Not Great
I liked this but I still enjoyed the movie even better. It's nice to read a comic book that is deceptive in the way it seems like it's about nothing but it actually has a whole lot to say about growing up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Despite my doubts, this is a great story
I was a bit taken aback by Ghost World when I started to read it (without having seen the movie). For one thing, the protagonists are teenage girls, the author an adult man.How does an adult man learn how teenage girls act when no males are around?Tthe presence of the opposite gender always changes how people act.Regardless, women don't seem to be complaining about his portrayal of Enid and Rebecca, so I assume he pulled it off.
5-0 out of 5 stars a guy who gets it right regarding teenage socially mobile girls
I would tend to distrust a male author who writes from a teenage girl's perspective, but I think this author gets it right.I was a teenage girl long ago, and his stories here evoke memories of oneupsmanship and competitiveness behind every girl friendship. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Wrong With Easy Answers?
We tend to make esoteric things harder than they are. But the art of writing is really very Zen-like: You get to a point where you realize you were making things needlessly difficult.
2-0 out of 5 stars An okay read but nothing great
Has some useful information in it, but most of it seemed like commonsense.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best
The most profound book I've ever read on writing. This idea that writing is all about evoking emotions gets to the heart of the matter. Once you get past basic grammar and things like that, the real craft is how to put together your stories in a purposeful way to evoke a given set of emotions. Absolutely outstanding in every way. Not just for screenwriting even though that's his area. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Patty is a pioneer for telling her candid story
"Call Me Anna" is Patty's own story. Patty Duke wrote this book in 1988 long before it was fashionable to "tell all" like today's throwaway "stars" do.
1-0 out of 5 stars Boring.....
I actually stopped reading this book about halfway through, she is a boring actress and her life story is not really makes for interesting reading.

Born poor and surrounded by addicts and illness, young Anna Marie Duke drifted into the arms of a society-busy married couple wanting to represent her in show business; they were odd social climbers who nonchalantly took away Duke's identity and gave her a made-up existence that crumbled once the photographers went home. A few of Duke's stories, while never less than candid and darkly amusing, are nearly too wild to believe(or maybe that's because they seem half-finished, as with the story of a motel molestation attempt or a day at a doctor's office where Patty's grandmother was deeply shaken after being forced into a strange contraption apparently meant to subdue her). Patty the Singer gets a colorful chapter(she hated her records for the UA label)and the chaos surrounding "Valley of the Dolls" is wonderfully captured. The final chapters skitter over her mental illness and a new marriage, and Patty doesn't delve much into her feelings as a woman(having her second child seemed to help her blossom, but we don't feel her passion, mostly her drive, her unfocused ambition and her neuroses).Still, she's a charming writer and has a sly way with a story(her roots are very important to her, and she's fine as a leader or a follower, but she never loses her vitality or funny malice). ... I purchased this book to support the Textiles Syllabus in Australia in Costume. The pictures are amazing and show the detail and can only truly inspire.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
Wow! This is a truly magnificent book. The quality of the photos is extraordinary. It's terrific to get a close-up look at the craftsmanship and materials used. The clothing of Parts I-III are shown in great detail. (I just got the book yesterday, and I spent half an hour looking at Padme's wedding dress alone!) My only complaints are a)the costumes of IV-VI do not get the same exhaustive documentation and b)some space should have been devoted to closer looks at various weapons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THE BOOK, SEE THE MOVIES (AGAIN)
I'm a big fan of Charlie Chaplin and have seen all his movies several times. But after reading John Bengston's remarkable "Silent Traces," I'm watching the movies again. With renewed interest.John's book provides the reader with a fascinating insight into the Hollywood (and L.A.) that was.. and still exists in Chaplin's films.I never thought a book this detailed and intelligent would be possible.I was wrong. Thanks to John and all his contributors, we now have greater appreciation and understanding for the genius known as Charlie Chaplin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chaplin and L.A. Spaces
This book is the result of amazing detective work by author John Bengston, who says he hopes to "use Chaplin's films as a portal to the past" by identifying the locations where Chaplin shot his films.Mr. Bengston fully succeeds in achieving his goals in this lavishly illustrated book, which often juxtaposes pictures from spaces in present Hollywood and the surrounding area with photographs and movie stills from Chaplin's era showing those same spaces.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every Page of This Book is Fascinating!
John Bengston has done it again!I didn't think it could be possible for him to top the miracle of research he performed with SILENT ECHOES, but when I got a copy of SILENT TRACES I was both astounded and delighted to see that he had. What an amazing book! What I think is so enjoyable about this book is that you don't really have to know a lot about the films of Charlie Chaplin to find it interesting. There is an endless fascination in comparing the "then" with the "now" photos to see how much or how little has changed.I don't know how Mr. Bengston has managed to figure out all of this, but I am so glad he did.I can't wait to see what he could possibly do for an encore.I highly recommend this remarkable book! ... Editorial Review

It's well known that a vast number of people work on any given movie in roles as varied as writing scripts, choosing locations, dressing sets, costuming the players, lighting scenes, manipulating the camera, directing actors, editing film, working on sound, advertising the finished product, and screening it to an audience. Have you ever thought about how these components are collated? Or why the director is most often considered the author of a film? Wonder no more, because Sidney Lumet's Read more

Lumet's book is very well written. He has done a great service to movie lovers everywhere who want to learn more about the process of filmmaking.I wish more directors wrote books like this.It is helpful if you have seen some of his more popular films before reading the book since he uses numerous references to them to illustrate why a certian decision was made or how different elements of the film contribute to the theme.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide
I like old movies like are shown on Turner Classic Movies and this has the reviews for them. This book is of the same high calibre as Maltin's annual movie review guide. I would say it is indispesible for any old movie buff. Bravo!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Companion that shouldn't stand alone
A good book for lovers of old movies who hate browsing through the 1600 pages of Maltin's regular guide only to find the film their looking for between a BOMB by Adam Sandler and a Yugoslavian-Japanese Documentary nobody has ever heard of. The Classic Movie Guide was not made to be a list of 4-star, really great old movies. It was made as a companion guide to the regular book as a place to put older, minor films to make room for newer movies in the regular guide. People who feel cheated because their 2006 guide still contains Gone With the Wind should probably know that it will always be in both guides, but films such as Law and Order(1953) or O. Henry's Full House(1952) may one day only be found in the classic guide. They should also note that their 2006 guide is about 100 pages thinner than the 2005 guide and that reviews of vintage series (e.g. Blondie, The Thin Man) are no longer listed in the regular guide and have been moved to the classic guide. In my understanding of this book, more and more minor old films will be removed from the regular guide and placed in the classic guide which will be revised every 5 years. My suggestions for this book would be to change the title to Leonard Maltin's Vintage Movie Guide and add films made before 1965 but after 1960, such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Lawrence of Arabia. I also would suggest making a third guide in about five or six years just for foreign films, excluding British films of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leonard Maltin's ClassicMovie Guide
GREAT book,but.........(if you can't pass this on,then just take the 5 stars with no comment, please) eliminate all foreign films from book,EXCEPT British films. Will make more room for more American classics including more B-westerns! Otherwise, a great book and fine response from Amazon.Bill Muhr Tucson,AZ ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars For video?
First of all I kind of expect a touch of sense in graphics and layout when the book treats the subject Photoshop. The interface reminds me of a Spanish course book I had in 8th grade wich also made me puke.
