4-0 out of 5 stars Pleased but not overwhelmed
I am not sure what I had expected for a teaching format but my initial reactionto the book was that it was too cartoony for the structure I was looking for in the human body and expression.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly helpful!
I had to do a full costume presentation with renderings for 6 characters for my class and I was so lost! I am not an artist at all, so I got this book and it helped me so much. It explained everything in detail and my renderings came out great! I would definitely recommend this book for beginners and experienced alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know
I bought this book because I had a project to do on costume rendering, and I know very little about it.Now, thanks to Tan Huaixiang, I know so much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring but not instructional...
Rodriguez is a phenom, only matched today by Soderberg. Both are directors who do it all, but it's not likely that most people will have the chops to be able to match Rodriguez skill for skill. So this book won't tell you how to actually make a movie, but it will tell you how to work with the limitations not just of the medium, but of everything else from lack of budget, lack of resources, lack of sets, lack of everything except imagination. The key thing you learn from this book is you get great stories about how Rodriguez overcame the limitations at the moment. Only problem is that you won't run into the same limitations, and you probably don't even have a turtle either. Key wisdom is never give up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learn from his experiences
Robert Rodriguez is living proof that you don't have to do everything exactly right to make it work. He was nearly kicked out of college, and he could barely get into film school. He made a movie -- on film, no less --for $7,000, performing the job of director, director of photography, acting coach, editor, producer, and countless others...
5-0 out of 5 stars most important book i will ever read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
Quality pastel renders par usual with this art of something Pixar. The color theory alone in this book is worth every penny. Great stuff to continue to inspire us fellow artists. One regret, they need to start putting some of the 3-D stills in the book since their work is unlike anything else out there. Overall, a must buy for the artist reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of a movie from concept to artwork
The new animated movie CARS comes at you all finished and complete. This is how it came about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated
I purchased this originally, because as well as being a fan of the movie, "Cars", I am an up and coming animator and am very interested in all aspects of animation. In the description it told me the book tells of how the original idea was made into a film and the steps and research taken to do so, so I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Pics. Fantastic guide of the movie
I got that after seing the movie and i loved it. Great quality pics, storyboard, interesting notes, and full scritpt of the movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Entering the 'verse
This book is awesome. It includes the shooting script for the movie and gives a lot of historical background information on the Firefly 'verse as well as some of Joss Whedon's and the cast's musings on Firefly and the making of Serenity. A cool part of the book is the long interview with Joss, which prefaces the screening script. Joss discusses anything and everything you would want to know about the characters, about the ship, and about the 'verse. The best part about the shooting script is it includes Joss' descriptions before they came to life and deleted scenes so it's the original story Joss wanted to tell. Overall, I'd recommend this book for anybody who wants to know more about Firefly and Serenity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addiction territory ahead
I'm just realizing that this is the fifth Firefly/Serenity related item I'm writing a review for--which means I actually possess five items...and that gives me cause for concern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - highly recommend it!
Video Shooter is an excellent instructional guide. Braverman's unprecedented expertise and superior storytelling skills help guide readers through all the key topics and everything you'd need to know for professional video shooting and production. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars BARRY KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT
What I like most about Mr. Braverman's book is how it speaks not only to the technical side but more so to the creative side. His insights are geared toward using talent and instinct within the given parameters of the tools and medium. The book was a fun and easy read with a humorous, conversational style and lots of pictures (which makes perfect sense given it's a book involving a visual medium). I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to shoot a story (emphasis on STORY) without getting lost in the wonder of technology yet using that very technology only to free up the story. Hats off to Mr. Braverman for a handy how-to guide to get that story shot and out on screens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - A Must-Have
This book far exceeded my expectations, even after reading all the five star reviews. The text is both engaging and informative - a rare combination for what might be termed a "how-to" type book.Braverman's book actually stands as an interesting read aside from the technical and artistic information it imparts. His style is refreshingly candid and his guidance practical.

"What would I have done, in their place?" That's the question any reader of this terrifying true story must ask, and the answer may not come easily.

4-0 out of 5 stars Charlotte Bronte Seattle,WA
This book's controversial topic of cannibalism made it stand out from other books. Although some parts of the book dragged on, the book was overall a page turner. This book is about a clan of men and women: rugby players, their friends and family, and a few other passengers, that crash in the Andes. In the end, only sixteen men survive and to survive they have to eat the bodies of their dead friends. I like how this book describes the main characters' personalities in an accurate and honest way. In this book the characters are not portrayed as angels or demons but instead, humans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Consider it an investment!
This book is one of the first things i would grab if my house was on fire!An absolute must-have for MM fans or for anyone interested in photography.Bert Stern writes an account of his photo shoots with Marilyn, providing the reader insight into his experience and the back-story makes the photos even more fascinating. The book also includes prints of the negatives destroyed by Marilyn herself (provoking some controversy over disrespecting MM's obvious wish that the photos not be released). We are given a glimpse into how Marilyn saw herself, as well as how she wished to be perceived by the world, in the months leading up to her death.

5-0 out of 5 stars Showcasing Marilyn Monroe at the height of her all too tragically shortened career
Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) is perhaps America's most famous "sex goddess", a young woman whose life and death have taken on mythic qualities as having been a woman of beauty and sex appeal. Bert Stern is the fashion photographer who was the last to be granted a sitting by Marilyn Monroe six weeks before she died. The photography 3-day sessions was arranged by Vogue magazine and took place at the Los Angeles Bel-Air Hotel. The sessions produces a total of 2,571 photographs (375 in color) and included fashion, portrait, and nude studies from which only twenty went on to publication in Vogue magazine. Now all 2,571 photographs have been collected under one cover in Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting (originally published in 1992 but until now having long been out of print) and are available for Marilyn Monroe fans in this unaltered compendium showcasing Marilyn Monroe at the height of her all too tragically shortened career.
5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn's Last And Best Photos
If you are true Marilyn fan you must get this book. It's more expensive than most coffee table books ($75) but it is so worth it. There are more than 2000 photos in it! The pictures were taken just six weeks before she died. The photos are stunning! Many of them are seminude and I don't think she ever looked better. It's hard to believe this was her last photo session.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Bible" of Film Scoring

An excellent book, and the principal how-to text in the field of film scoring. It's used as the text in university-level film-scoring classes, and it's on the desk of many practicing feature-film composers. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but pricey
I'm very new to lighting for any film stock. My goal is to become more aware of how to light for film, mainly digitial stock. This books does provide extremely detailed information on lighting, such as footcandles, gamma, lighting terms and much more, but mainly in one chapter. It did provide detail about digital film lighting and standard photography lighting. I wish it gave more insight about "moods" but I learned a great deal. Downside, it's expensive for the material you get.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Novices
This book dishes out a lot of information in the small space between it's paperback covers.I read it looking for film lighting basics, and had a tough time grasping some of the more technical language involving exposure, T-stops, etc, even though I have a decent background in photography. The book does a poor job of addressing and explaining these key concepts.I gleaned a decent amount of information from the pictures and diagrams, but they were poorly aligned with the text, requiring lots of flipping back and forth. All in all, I would reccommend this book only to people with a fair amount of knowledge of the physics behind photography and/or film.

This books really gives you all the movies you must see if you really love great films. There are many titles for every taste. It gives you a great description of the plot, casting and other nice trivia information so you know what you are talking about the next time you get into movies talk : )

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for solving video store indecision
I bought this book because I can never make up my mind at the video store. The book is arranged chronologically, with some very old films at the start, through to more recent films towards the end. All of the films I've watched from this book have been interesting/challenging/enjoyable- they're usually in the 'arthouse' section of my video store.
2-0 out of 5 stars Beware the spoilers!
1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die could be a great film guide. It is loaded with both well-known and obscure films, many of which I have sought out and enjoyed after reading about them in the book. I've really started to enjoy noir films because of this book's recommendations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ahhhh... memories. Sweet, bloody memories.
Short and sweet: An extensive and detailed history of the much loved horror series covers the production of each film from it's inception to opening night. Production history is toldthrough quotes and observations from the cast and crew with some editorial from the author to keep things flowing. Lots and lots of great color pics, some of which I had not seen before. A little dry at times, but still a fascinating read. The only real problem I had with it was the surprising amount of typos. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crystal Lake Memories!
Theres one word to describe "Crystal lake Memories"...Awsome!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars The complete history of all things Voorhees
Peter Bracke has put together the most detailed and exhaustive book about Friday the 13th that could possibly be written.Bracke, and those he interviews, do not look at the legacay of the maligned and long running slasher series with rose tinted glasses. Many of the people who worked on the films did not like, nor seem to enjoy, doing so.The always quick and dirty shoots would, more often than not, be plagued by problems both technical and personal.Everybody clamors to take credit for the "good stuff" in the movie and, except in rare cases of professional candor, are quick to place the blame for a paticular failure at the feet of others. It is an eye opening read that takes the mythical romance out of film production and reveals it for what it is - a lot of blood, sweat, and tears creating something very few people appreciate, much less enjoy.Whether you are a fan of Friday the 13th or not, Crystal Lake Memories is an essential read for anyone interested in a candid look at lo budget film making.Highest recommendation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and Provacative
I read this book in 2 days - I was taken and fascinated with Jenna's story, I couldnot put the book down. It was well worth every penny spent. I highly reccommend this book to ANYONE - whether you are intersted in the porn industry or a fan of Jenna, this book is a must read. Very, very well written - I gained so much respect for her after reading this book. She is intelligent and a true self made woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive
This book is dangerously well-written.Once you start reading it, you won't be able to stop.It is the true story of one of modern america's greatest celebrity icons, a woman who made her own fortune in the porn business instead of being used up and spit out by it like so many other women are.Neil Straus co-wrote this book with Jenna, and he is the author of the intensely awesome story THE GAME, which is another one you won't be able to put down.Read either or both of these books with the knowledge that they are like smoking crack -- COMPLETELY OVERPOWERING AND ADDICTIVE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite impressed
I didn't have high expectations for this book. I expected it to be another cliche about an abusive childhood that caused her to become a porn star.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on sound.. This is it
Where do I start? In a nutshell, this book *IS* the only book to have on sound if your only buying one.No lie.My background... 20 years ago I used to be the "The Amp Dr" fixing commercial PA systems, amps, etc. I have a much better background on sound than most, I was an electrical engineer after that, designing power supplies, and other analog interfaces to digital equipment. Most of that has been dormant for the last 20 years, but I recently decided to make documentaries, and as two of my first projects deal with music, sound seemed pretty important.I got several books on sound, I figure buy six, one has to be good. You can save your money, this book was the one in six.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare 'how to' book that delivers actual content!
I've often been taken in by large reference books that promise to be a comprehensive guide to a subject, but turn out to be a lot of filler(screen shots of PC applications, or an excuse for the author to give lots of less-than-useful anectodal stories, etc.)
5-0 out of 5 stars A Top Resource for Anyone who does Serious DV Recording
This book is a top shelf resource. It is useful to both novices and those with more experience. Starting with the very basics, and that does involve some physics, it works its way through virtually all aspects of sound production for digital video.

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing's a beast
This is 600 pages packed with deep analysis. It will take a while to read, but you will probably know more than many Hollywood directors by the time you finish it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted
This book helped me to understand the inner philosophy of cinema and its techniques. I'm a Director in film and tv industry. I tried to find resources about the art of my specialty. This book is what I wanted it's writing about Low budget film making but in a totally profecional way. I was so bored of these books writing about the "HOLLYWOOD" filmmaking standards. I appreciate that this book brings the art of Cinema in the hands of ordinary people, with no money to make the "extraordinary production" films but in people which trying to find the real essence of Cinema.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plain speak on directing
I have read many books on directing, and recently been directed my first project with a real budget, real crew. This book is the best for learning the production process, and covers it all in a plain-speak nuts & bolts fashion. A great resource ro prepare a director who wants to work at the professional level. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is essential reading for anyone interested in directing or acting. Judith Weston's brilliance is to recognize that directors, actors, writers, and technicians are involved in a process that is at essence a collaboration. In order for them to have the best shot at creating something true and meaningful, they must share a language and a method of exchange that fosters creative cooperation. Weston rightly sees the director as the central figure in inspiring the energy of a production's harmony. She advises the prospective director on every aspect of a stage or film production, showing how the director can draw the best performances possible from actors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No other book on acting or directing comes close
This book isn't just for directors. It is an invaluable resource for actors as well. I've taught film and video acting for a number of years and never found a book that was worth having students read even part of. Until this one. Unlike most books on acting which focus on techniques that may work great on stage but are worse than disastrous on film, Judith Weston goes under the surface of acting and directing to the core of what a close-up camera needs to see. That, in a nutshell, is "lending the character your unconscious," so that absolutely nothing looks (or is) fake or "pretend." Even more importantly, she provides down-to-earth, extremely effective techniques for directors that support and demand genuine, affect-free performances. She discusses the creative process of the director at a level that is not idiosycratic or based on her personal "style" (as so many books for directors and actors do). Her advice is both common-sensical and deeply insightful, it's what every good director knows but often can't articulate consistently enough. Don't miss this book if you work in film or video, whether you are a director, actor, teacher, editor, DP, AD, or even a gaffer. After reading Weston, you will see every aspect of the actors performances more truly and clearly, and find yourself finding new ways to get the most out of every second on screen. One of those books that changes your life by telling you what you already knew more clearly than you ever thought it could be said, and giving you fresh new ways to put it into practical use. Highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for non-film directors, too!
I'm directing a play right now and I can say that Ms. Weston's book has made the experience a truly wonderful one. When I first read the book I thought that she was advocating for too much freedom for the actor, but now that I've tried her techniques I can see that they really give results. The only thing is that for film directors who don't have a tremendous amount of rehearsal time, some of the techniques might be asking a bit much. The process suggested by this book is a little time-consuming, but you WILL get a great performance in the style you want if you use it!

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book on directing actors
This book teaches the most important skill a director can possess: getting great performances from actors.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Technique
The book makes doing eyebrow shaping look easy...and it not only looks easy- by following a few steps it turns out it IS easy. If you want to learn the basics- buy this book. If you want to do a home makeover- go glamorous, sensual, then fun later on - buy this book. If you want to tune your look a bit- get it! I guess I don't have to go on, but if you are like me and need a bit of instruction and cant afford a makeup artist to be at your beckon call- buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Black & White Photos!
You would think that a book on makeup -- especially at this price -- would contain many more color photographs. After all, successful makeup is dependent upon illusions of color as well as light and shadow.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very thorough textbook...Highly recommended
This book is recommended in several pro makeup sites [...] and for a good reason. This book is a must-have for all the professional makeup artists. The book talks about all aspects of makeup- from straight beauty makeup, to special effects, appliances and hair techniques (applying moustaches and beards). The appendix itself is worth the price of the book. It talks about what should be in a makeup kit, product recommendations and comparisons, and what to expect when trying to get into a union. I love, love, love this book. I can't say enough good things about it, and have constantly relied on it for accurate information regarding makeup applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars love it!
I have seen the movie so many times then decided to buy the book. The movie is of course after the book since the book is really a play/screenplay. I thought it was great. It added so much more depth. I am in love with the movie. I am in love with the book. Do not pass it up! its a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
OK...I read this book in college in acting class b/c we were going to perform the play...first of all, its a very easy and enjoyable read...its about these four college kids...2 couples...this one guys girlfriend seems a little mysterious at times...he is severely whipped, like most other college guys with girlfriends, OK so he's a little more whipped than most people...anyway I read the book and was like, "OK this is just a story about everyday life, nothing unusual at all, sounds like a lot of other people I know," and then at the end you are like "HOLY $***!" At least I was, some people say they knew what was going to happen but I didn't see it coming...and here's the best/worst part: Labute has things happen in this book where you kinda know what happened but not exactly...it will drive you crazy...you will want to know what was said...what happened...I've been kind of obsessing over the story the past couple weeks, and I often find myself wondering, "What would have happened if Adam hadn't done this, or if he had done that..." I would really like to ask Labute a few questions, but I am sure he wouldn't tell me anything b/c that would kind of ruin the whole point. I found I could really relate to the characters, it seemed very realistic to me, like Labute was a kid once too...except of course, for what happens at the end...I was shocked that this person would do this! What did they do? You must read it to find out...and read the book before seeing the movie...they are very similar but I think it's more fun that way and I noticed some very important things that were in the book but not in the movie and vise-versa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Startling!
I've always admired the work of Labute, but admittedly never got around to reading or seeing "The Shape of Things." Needless to say, then, when I finally did get to read it, I began with high expectations. And these expectations were met. "Shape of Things" is a startlingly crisp and wittily written piece that examines the form of "art" and just how far it can be taken. Without a doubt, this is an artist's play, and certainly one of the most groundbreaking dramas of recent years. The end will knock your socks off... particularly if you don't see what's coming! ...
