5-0 out of 5 stars A Grateful Guitarist
I'd like to get my two cents in regarding both the Fretboard Logic series and some of the negative reviews appearing on the Amazon site. First, these books and videos are without peer, and that's in spite of the fact that it was written 20 years ago, and has been copied endlessly by legions of johnny-come-latelys ever since. Second, disregard the negative reviews and concentrate on the positive ones, like the ones where players say it changed their lives. You may notice that the negative reviewers - for whatever reason - seem to have a lower ability to understand what they are reading. For example, one reviewer says "Don't buy this book because it is like studying German in order to learn English." This student is clearly referring to Edwards' usage of guitar-oriented terminology to describe what your eyes are seeing (on the fretboard) in addition to what your ears are hearing in standard music-oriented terms. If your capacity is such that you are able to grasp that the term "A form in the 3rd position" refers to what your eyes are seeing and your fretting fingers are doing, but that your ears are also hearing a "C Chord," then perhaps Fretboard Logic is not too difficult for you. (There are Five Basic Chord Forms, in fact, and can be used in any position.) If you are able to appreciate that a description of the form and position would be irrelevant to someone who plays an instrument other than guitar, but helpful to someone playing guitar, then maybe it isn't at all like teaching German to learn English. Perhaps the explanation for the occasional negative review on this seminal work have more to do with the source (which is always suspect when it advertises a competing title). In the first place, playing guitar is a difficult endeavor, and requires skills and drive which not everyone possess. I am one of those many people for whom Fretboard Logic has forever changed their lives. And yes, I also bought the Hal Leonard/MI book, and was amused by a number of things. First, the Fretboard Logic ads often include compelling testimonials from players, and over the years has been compared to the Rosetta Stone, the Holy Grail, the Bible, and so on. So the Tagliarino book starts out with what he terms "The Five Root Shapes" which are merely the tonics for the C chords in sequence, connected by interlocking circles, and you are told - wait for it - "This is the Rosetta Stone, the Holy Grail, the Magna Carta of guitar comprehension." [The sound of crickets chirping...] Later on, you find a keyboard diagram - I'm not kidding - being used in a book on how to play guitar! Heh. For the most part, you are spending your time constructing the patterns of the fretboard yourself, interval by boring interval, with a pencil, all to arrive at what Edwards produced and illustrated 20 years ago in Fretboard Logic. I guess they do it that way to get around the copyright issue. If you already know the Logic series, it is not unlike building a bridge with toothpicks and being handed a two-by-four and a pocket knife. Bottom line:Skip all the johnny-come-latelys, ignore the downer dudes and go to the source. You'll thank me later.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't By This Book!
I wish I would have came here and read the negative reviews before I ordered this book. Buried underneath all of these glowing reviews are a few that were much more appropriate. This book is almost like studying German in order to learn English. One of the key reasons for wanting to learn about notes, scales, chords, arpeggios, etc., is to be able to communicate with other musicians. Like one of the reviews said, unless the people you're with know this system, it's not going to help. I'd recommend the Hal Leonard/Musician's Institute book "Guitar Fretboard Workbook" by Barrett Tagliarino. It's available here on Amazon, and is the best written book I've come across. I gave it a quick first read-through, and everything made enough sense that I fell that once I read it a few more times, I'll understand it all thoroughly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This book is brilliant. With a lot of practice and a few headaches, the concepts in this book will increase your playing exponentially. How do I emphasize A LOT OF PRACTICE? Only get this book if you are willing to put in the work to learn the guitar!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great technical information, very useful resource
This book covers everything you need from the technical aspects of setting up shots and planning your action. It uses storyboards as an effective teaching device to convey the basic and some more advanced concepts and does a better job than most of explaining the 180 degree rule.Negative reviews of this book state that it is too focused on the technical aspects of filmmaking and not as much on the people skills needed, which is true, but can a book really teach you how to talk to people?A great addition to any filmmaking library but would need resources for the non-technical aspects of film. You could make a great looking film based just on what is in this book, but it might not be the most thrilling. The writer does a good job of focusing on the work and not in telling his own stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visualizing
This book is the only one I have found that goes extremely in depth into shot composition. Great book. However, if you are looking for a book that will take you step by step into how to acctually produce the movie, this isnt what you are looking for. This book is all about properly translating your vision to the screen, what works and what doesnt. Overall, this book was an amazing resource.

2-0 out of 5 stars WHY???
Why is it that in all of these film books there is such a huge focus on storyboards? That's what a third of this book covers. I should point out that many directors, including the two greatest directors of all time, Elia Kazan and Stanley Kubrick, as well as Woody Allen, Bernardo Bertolluci, Sydney Pollack, and many more do NOT storyboard their shots. Even Welles, later in his career, admitted to making up his mind on the set, and Hitchcock, famously known for storyboards, only storyboarded the BIG shots, not the entire film. I just wish these books wouldn't focus so much on pre-visualization when many major directors DONT PRE-VISUALIZE AT ALL. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny but odd.. Buy with caution.
Very good book but only buy it if you are looking for a book with a very strange sense of humor. In the first story he explains his job as an Elf at Santaland and describes his daily life. It is so funny, some of the things people do there are amazing and crazy at the same time.
3-0 out of 5 stars David Sedaris
Another collection of essays from a brilliant wit who you know you love to read. It's like I've said in my reviews before. There's no need to review each book when I can just give the author a blanket endorsement and guarantee you'll love whatever you find by the guy. I love it when that happens. I may have annoyed Jan by laughing out loud too often. Sedaris is like that.
4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoy sick humor!
If you laugh at children falling down this is the book for you.He may push it sometimes but isn't that what a good writer should do?Knowing he is half Greek, so am I, I was hoping for a good egg cracking story or roasting lamb in your backyard.Unfortunately there wasn't one.Santaland was my favorite. ... Wild Harmonies
4-0 out of 5 stars emotion is everything
She is looking for the right place in her life. Most of the people are looking for a meaning to live for.
4-0 out of 5 stars insightful delightful, but not easy to read "Un" autobiography
WILD HARMONIES is an insightful delightful "Un" autobiography that breaks the rules of chronological order most books in that genre follow.Instead, the renowned French pianist is all over the place yet contains enough discipline so that the reader can follow her story. Most interesting is the combining of a love for music with a love for wolves. The music started as an unmanageable and unpredictable child in France while the love of wolves began as an adult in Florida when she met her neighbor's she-wolf.As she did with the piano Helene Grimaud became an obsessed fanatic who has opened up a wolverine conservatory in Upstate New York.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly lavish!
Massive, beautiful and gorgeous. What a treat to finally have a such an incredibly awe-inspiring piece as this to finally compile all of the wonderful works of art that go into what is, was and remains Tennant/Lowe.I have honestly wanted something like this to be produced for decades now, and when I first saw it in the UK, I ordered it there and waited for it for weeks. Now you can have it here quickly and painlessly.Definitely pick up a copy today...if you are even the most casual of fan (and somehow, I sense that if you stumbled across this, you are, as I, far more than that), you are very much deserving of this.Get it and cherish/treasure it for years. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Why are readers taking this books to heart, it's a book, written by an Fictional Person!
We have to remember that this is fiction, just as Terry Perry Movies and Plays.I feels it's to make you think, laugh and draw your own conclusion.Instead of picking out things that you did not enjoy, try picking out things that were good about the book, that made you think. Many times you may read something that isn't entertaining to you, but entertaining to others. In purchasing this book, you have to remember that Madea is a man in women clothing, and accept it for what it is, entertainment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Humorous, very insightful, a great Book for all Women, no matter their race!
Personally, I had to lower my expectations after finishing this book, but it is still getting 5 stars because, as it states Madea is a fictional character and so you take it as it's meant to be, to make you look at your life and maybe see things differently, that's all, and also 5 stars for making me laugh at subjects that can be painful truths to that many of us woman don't even want to think about too deeply, let alone face up to and change.I loved the witty repartee, I liked the matter-of-fact style of Madea! If you are reading this as if it were a non-fictional self-help, instead of the inspirational and uplifting Bit of humor blended with "let's-get-real" truth that it is, you might be a very disappointed.Tyler Perry did a fantastic job of recounting the age-old Black Woman's wisdom on many private subjects we women all discuss and also of making ALL WOMAN, no matter their race, see that we need to stick together and that no matter what life brings your way, keep Laughing! I look forward to another book from the beloved Madea.Great Job, Tyler Perry! Great Job!

We are so happy to have received Philadelphia Chickens as a shower gift. While our 10-month old doesn't understand the lyrics, he clearly enjoys the music, bouncing and smiling whenever he hears, "Cows, we're remarkable cows....."The songs are very enjoyable for adults as well.I've given this as a gift to 3 friends and all have loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait....characters need some improvement.
I waited impatiently for #5. I was hooked from the first time I saw the cover. The social comentary is valid and some of the characters are well done. The need for firearms in society is positivley reinforced- a brave stand by the authors considering the current cultural war against guns. Certain characters are making decsions that are just plain stupid. This series is fiction, but was meant to examine how people would live long term. They would learn from their mistakes regarding security, and not go galivanting and compromise their group. Any less thought and the series will begin to be a pure horror series, with people being stupid just to keep the body count up. I am waiting for #6.

5-0 out of 5 stars The road goes ever onward
This ongoing saga continues and continues to impress.Rick and company have settled in at the prison and although there have been numerous traumas both related to the walking dead and to the interpersonal dynamics, the little community seems to be in fairly good shape nowadays.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait...
Well, it took forever for Image to release "Walking Dead 5: The Best Defense."Thankfully, it was worth the wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shiny!
"Firefly" is simply the greatest television show of all time.Created by Joss Whedon -- the genius behind "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (the second greatest TV show of all time), and "Angel" -- "Firefly" is both brilliant and unique:It is a sci-fi western, with wonderful characters, compelling storylines, and (of course) Joss Whedon's trademark witty dialogue."Firefly" is one of the few shows that I love watching over and over again; and never seem to get tired of.If you've never seen "Firefly" you owe it to yourself to check it out on DVD.Of course, if you HAVE seen "Firefly" then you already know just how amazing the show really is.So, you're definitely going to want to get your hands on the "Firefly Official Companion, Vol. 1".

5-0 out of 5 stars Steinway,a place, its people, the piano
Mr. Barron writes a great story.Other books have catalogued the Steinway history, and even how the piano works, but this innovative story adds life to what might otherwise be just an organized mass of metal and wood. The piano has a personality! In the narrative, the reader follows the construction of a single concert grand piano, but in the process we learn so much more by exploring many of the individuals involved in its building, the Steinway family and the workmen who lovingly bend the wood, glue the keys, and make the piano sing. Mr. Barron has not only written a great history of Steinway and the pianos they build, but created a fascinating story of its people. Its a great read for even the non-piano lovers among us. I couldn't put it down from start to finish. (The schematic drawings in the back - the new and the old, are particularly fascinating!)

4-0 out of 5 stars PIANO OR PEOPLE
While I enjoyed this book, it is really much more about people than pianos, and the "common man" at that.Picturesque as they might be,many details about the workers' personal lives could have been spared. For those of us who play pianos but have never taken one apart, a labeled schematic would have been very helpful in understanding the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Piano as a Person
My husband and I enjoyed this book greatly and have found others have enjoyed it as much, if not more.10 days ago as I lay in Intensive Care I ended up discussing the book with the fellow in the Intensive Care bed next to mine.I doubt either of us will ever again find a book that let us take our minds off our intensive pains for that half hour disucssion.

3-0 out of 5 stars An X-Rated "All in a Day's Work"
There is very little comic insight in this book.A collection of short tales of debauchery and wild drug use that road comics would tell each other, the book makes a normal person feel like a rube who bought a ticket to the freak show. (Yes, there is just a hint of envy in that last statement.) Some of the stories are funny, in a "Porky's" sort of ashamed-that-I'm-laughing way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Warning Label
A warning label should be posted on this book: Please allocate 4-6 hours of time before opening this book. You will not be able to put it down.I truly enjoyed this compilation of stories from the comedy trenches.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really fun read
The Publishers' Weekly review on this page says this book is fantastic "bathroom reading." I guess they mean that it's perfect for people who don't always have time to sit down and read for an hour or two at a stretch.Because the stories in here are so short, it's easy to read for ten minutes, get a few complete stories and good chuckles, and then put the book down for next time. There are well over a hundred stories in here so if you read the book this way it'll last you for a while! 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book!Motivation for musicians!
People - some of us are born with it and some of us nurture and grow it, imagine if you had the ability to do both? Kenny Werner is the Tony Robbins for musicians. This book is more of a spiritual guide to become the musician YOU think you are capable of becoming. If you believe that the only thing stopping you from achieving success, is you, then you are ready for this book. The accompanying CD is great to listen to for meditating.I have discussed this book with many musicians and overall it is agreed that this book is easy to read, in fact easy to apply too!

A great discourse on how to be all you can be.Helps to dispel the mindsets and self-limiting attitudes we tend to hold onto consciously and subconciously.Broadens your scope and belief in self which allows you release and be the artist trapped inside you whether you believed it or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration to all musicians!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
This book is a great follow up to Little Green Book. There are 74 hands from real life play that Phil explains in detail so that you can learn while the situation unfolds.I like how Phil reduces the hands to their basic fundamentals and reinforces those key lessons in each hand - I think taking the complexity out of certain situations is key to success in real play, especially when there are so many emotional and maybe physical stresses on a players concentration once they are in the live situation.I have found myself facing many of the same situations that are in this book, and it was insightful and sometimes reassuring to see how a real professional handles the same hand.Overall a great addition to my poker literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
A very easy read for those of us that want to learn more about poker but, can't take too much theory.Great format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hal Leanard Guitar Method
My 9 and 7 yr old boys are both taking their first guitar lessons and it seems ok....the CD is a bit confusing..I couldn't tell what music it was corresponding to at first because it was going too fast.It should say "now we're doing sample #1" etc.I like the idea that all three books were together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Edition - Complete Perfection
I'm rarely one to completely hype a product, but in this case, I must.I purchased this to use with an after school program I'm starting this year and to bone up on my lacking guitar skills. This series has everything one needs to LEARN to play the guitar.

4-0 out of 5 stars for nice guys hoping to change their situation
I read this book as a beginning text, and I think it's useful for those people who are lulled into the 'nice guy phenomenon' who are a bit naive/overly idealistic about romantic situations and who need a good kick of machiavellianism up the rear. It's emphasis is on the later years (ie past 25), and takes a topic that's very difficult and gives it a comedic twist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I ever read
Very funny and very true.... A guide that should be followed by every man if they want to survive in this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handle with care!
This isn't just another book about some jerk trying to get a girl. It's about dealing with women and had this funny, tongue-in-cheek thing going for it. I have to say that I did crack up a few times while I was reading it. (I am sure this was the author's intention.) Can you take it seriously? Sure and that's why I recommend it, along with "Get Laid Now!". ... Read more

This is a fascinating look into an aspect of Japanese culture I never knew existed.Joan Sinclair got incredible access -- access not only to the actual establishments, but access to the inner lives of some of these women and men whom she portrays with honesty and integrity. She has a fresh, exciting lens which comes through not without a revolutionary edge. This is an original. The intro by Farrer is also excellent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever
This has been the only book I have ever read that hit a huge cord within me and stayed. The messages and insights will stay with you long after you've put the book down.We have stopped watching TV with our kids during the week and instead talk, play games, go on walks and enjoy each other's company. We have learned to destress our house and focus on happiness. My husband and I have reconnected and our family is happier as a whole. This book, if you allow it to, can teach you miraculous things.Shmuley Boteach is an incredible rabbi, teacher, husband and above all, father. This book is worth 10 times it's price.Thank you Shmuley Boteach!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Chess is ultimately a game of human interaction and human drama.
The Immortal Game: A History of Chess, or How 32 Carved Pieces on a Board Illuminated Our Understanding of War, Art, Science and the Human Brain by David Shenk is more than just a book about 32 pices, it's an exceptional human drama and also a great resource on the fundamentals of chess. When you begin reading chess history, you'll know almost immediately that David Shenk wanted to convey its astonishing intellectual and cultural breadth and also to pay a lasting tribute to the game of chess. It earned a four rating due impart that this book is not targeted at the masters of chess, indeed, expert players will not find any lessons on how the game works or why it's so great. But, rather, the millions of others who are more casually interested in the game is its intended audience. Dave sought to write a book that would hold the attention of the most serious player but also never confuse or bore the complete neophyte. The history of chess is a great source on the history of civilization over the last 1500 years. Dave sought to balance an appreciation for the game itself with an exploration for how the game has influenced ideas over so many centuries. In many ways, it's impossible to understand the evolution of modern thought without chess as a crucial tool. The first thing, Dave does, is to help people understand the allure of the game. That's one of the main missions in the book. Chess is a rich combination of art and science, of intellect, intuition and stamina. It's not just a brainy game--it's also a human game. It's also a very accessible one. Chess is ultimately a game of human interaction and human drama.

4-0 out of 5 stars Psychological, historical and culture review by novice chess player
I liked this book because it was an excellent story written in the spirit of great fiction. It was well-organized and wove together many different threads from a variety of areas including psychology, history and culture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book...quick, brilliant read.
You do not have to be a chess player to enjoy this book. In my case, however, I am a chess player and enjoyed it immensly. I read this book cover to cover in about six hours...I have never read another book so fast in my life. The story was enthralling, the writing was captivating, and the points made about Chess and its impact on our world's culture and history were quite well made. ... Read more
