5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with the CD's
I loved these CD's.I had no problem playing them on a personal cd player or my car cd player.I did not hear any background noises while I played them.I really learned alot from them and I enjoyed the music and they were beautifully played.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Quality CD's
This item deserves a zero as a rating.I never had problems with CDs as I did with this 8-CD set. They refuse to play when you make a selection. When I placed them in multiple CD players, they sounded as if an airplane was taking off. These are very poor quality CDs for $100.Do not waste your money on this item.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorest Quality
I have never had so many problems with a CD set as I have had with this one. I returned my first set to Amazon due to several of the discs being damaged to the point that the tracks I needed could not be listened to. Right out of the box some of the discs were scratched or had visible imprints from the case material on them.Amazon was great and quickly sent me a replacement set, but amazingly I had the same problems with the next set. I, like you probably do, need the set for a college class so I could not afford to lose more time in returning another set for a replacement. After spending $90.00 for an item you are required to have it is infuriating to deal with this sort of thing. Unless you are absolutely stuck don't buy this CD set or you will really be stuck! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars beatle fans can really appreciate it
reading this book, as long as you know most beatle songs, will give you a better understanding and appreciation for the beatles. someone let me borrow it, and i have no background in audio production, but you begin to understand it through emerick's clear descriptions. He points out little things that happened in the studio that one would never catch. It's fun to read about it then play back the song and know where a certain lyric or idea came from. Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insider's View of Beatle Music Making!
In the early 1960s Geoff Emerick landed the dream job music fans would have killed for; assistant recording engineer at EMI Studio working with George Martin. It was a dream job because one of the first groups Emerick worked with was the Beatles. The next seven years of musical magic and misery Emerick spent in the control room are wonderfully chronicled in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective
This book is a unique perspective on The Beatles phenomenon.Admittedly, the author does give his opinion of the individual Beatles, but he acknowledges clearly that his perspective was entirely based upon observation and interaction in the studio. Therefore, all of the sound and fury expended in other reviews defending or attacking the author over his opinions of the individual personalities of the Beatles misses the point. This man was present at the creation of many of the most memorable Beatles records. He admits that he had limited contact with the individual Beatles, but what contact he had he recalls. Most of what he says about them individually is not new.We all know that Lennon was out of it for a lot of the time in the 1967-68 time period, and we all know that McCartney was the best all around musician of the bunch.Knowing that says nothing about the band, or who was the leader, or who wrote the best songs, or anything else.To the contrary, the impression one is left with of the personality sketches in this book is that the band was just that, a band, and that each individual made a contribution. The fact that the author had limited contact with George Harrison, for example, or that his contacts with Harrison were not always positive, is just one man's experience, and says little about Harrison.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Freek show stories.
Taking a line from his cancelled and poorly shown movie, Whedon and the Hacks at Dark Horse deliver up this rubbish, which is just that, Rubbish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect filler between TV series and movie
Quick admission: I'm a huge fan of the Firefly TV series and "Serenity".I think both were horribly underappreciated, and can't understand why they weren't more successful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Serenity, an under-sold epic
While it is a little inconvenient to have to jump from a television series (thanks Joss Whedon and crew and cast, untimely cancelled, bad judgment Fox) to movie (thanks Universal) to comic book (thanks Dark Horse), it is rewarding to see more of the story accessible to Firefly/Serenity fans.It is amazing how few fans actually saw the series on television or the movie but became big fans from DVD sales. This is a story that touches the heroic, underdog spark in all of us.The comic book was appreciated for connecting the series to the movie and for explaining a couple of missing elements such as what happened to the blue hands guys. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars behind andy's camel
Out of all The Police guys, Andy had the most wicked sense of humor. He saw, and still sees, things a tad differently than the rest of us. Having chatted with him a few times in person, I can say he is a most interesting man. I had no idea he wrote so well. I was a bit surprised when I heard this book was coming out. Andy, despite his mischief in The Police, always seemed the most private of the three. I also learned a few things I didn't know. And,to me,that's incredible. I have listened to his music since I was a teenager. Part of his appeal as a guitarist is his love for his instrument, of course. But Andy is also one of those rare performers that thinks more of "the song." He's not a flashy-solo kinda guy. The song is more important than any one member's part in it. A highly enjoyable read to be sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rock 'n' Roll Story
When I was in junior high, The Police was one of the biggest bands in the world and I was a huge fan.I had grown up listening mainly to sixties music like the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, etc.The Police was the first band I came to on my own and from my own era.No music group before or since has meant as much to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A funny blitz-force adventure of the highest order!
This is an amazing "life story" told with heaping amounts of humor and insight -- easily accessible to both the hardcore Police fan, and the reader simply interested in gaining perspective on the churnings of themusic business amidst a more spiritual pursuit.Andy uses his fantastic sense of humor to great effect here.I was constantly giggling at the absolute mayhem surrounding him at every turn.I had no idea he was such a roving wild man -- but from the man who wrote the classic "Behind My Camel" -- who would expect otherwise.I admire someone who enjoys Spinal Tap and Camus.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book connects the dots...
I had begun to get serious about immersing myself in Jazz. A little dive around the corner was showing excellent Jazz groups and I had to take the opportunity to discover this great art form. My daughter lent me a textbook she had from college.
5-0 out of 5 stars not for jazz scholars alone
It has been nearly 30 years since Mark Gridley's first edition of Jazz Styles appeared, and no other treatment of jazz styles comes close to his careful analysis of how jazz has been made since its inception. It is a work of great and serious scholarship, an invaluable resource for students of the genre.Yet, Jazz Styles is also an enjoyable and entertaining companion for anyone who wants to become a more perceptive listener to jazz. The Listening Guides are useful even for those 'veteran'

Editorial Review

In nearly two decades as chairman of the board, Alan "Ace" Greenberg has successfully guided Bear Stearns & Co. through the financial marketplace's dizzying highs and sickening lows. His management philosophy, often credited to "advisor and mentor" Haimchinkel Malintz Anaynikal, was articulated over the years in a series of witty and revealing memoranda. Grouped by era and prefaced briefly by the author in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another former employee review
I see that a few of us formers have reviewed this book or the soft cover version. It was just last week that I was told of the book, and as one of the many who received some of the memos I found myself reminded of the important things in business ;) A real person should answer the phone - and before the 2nd ring! Don't waste electricity, paperclips or rubber bands. Don't go nuts purchasing things you don't really need in up times. Two head can purchase equipment at better prices than 1 head. The importance of catching mistakes, owning up to them, and not hiding things in the drawers. You don't have to do something just because others are doing it. You'll find great employees in downtimes. And... how determination is so much more important then some letters after your name (unless you're a DR of course). Great reminders... for all. Thanks for the memories and lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahhhh...Corporate America!
As I was sifting through dust-ridden literature in my library, I came across this legendary book.I too am a former employee of Bear Stearns and remember meeting Mr. Greenberg during my frequent visits to the trading floor.
5-0 out of 5 stars You may actually get the point of this book
Yes, this book is repetitive, but that is what makes it so great.Ace Greenberg repeats the same message over and over again. He emphasizes, cut costs, hire people during the downtimes, forget about strategy development and he does so with humor. The employees at Bear were fortunate to have such clear communication from the top.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anime-style combat - is it right for your campaign?
I got this book at the recommendations of one of my players. While the styles are fairly well-balanced with the rest of the game, to me the main sticking point of the book is whether it really fits your campaign style or not.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise
I must admit, when I first saw the previews on Wizards I was skeptical at best. I hated the idea that none of the manuevers were available to anyone outside of the three classes, and that the book was off base, and that it would be a pain to change it around. After buying the book I've come to the realization that actually this book is pretty darn close to perfect. The classes presented are balanced, the maneuvers are awesome, the (few) monsters are excellent, and the story line to the book, while it won't be used by me in my campaign, is a good one as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breaths New Life into D&D Close Combat
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about this product when I first heard about it.I generally like my games to have a lower power level, and I haven't bought many "splatbooks" in the past.Plus, over the top fighting styles usually don't excite me.However, as I read some of the promotional material my interest started to peak.

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality, much content, but. . .
I've dabbled in jazz piano for many years to augment my rock chops.Treating this as a sideline (Until recently - I've started accompanying a standards singer), I haven't had a lot of spare money to spend on it.I've run into several frustrations with learning jazz piano that this book addresses with varying degrees of success:
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book about playing jazz that I own
I dont play piano, I don't own a piano, but I study piano to understand guitar and violin. About 15 years ago I started to get bored with popular music and started studying jazz and classical exclusively. I remember my first experience with trying to learn jazz, there were all these chords I had no idea how to play or what the symbols meant. A few years later I played bass in a jazz band and one of the horn players had this book and I bought it right away.
5-0 out of 5 stars Da Bomb!
The Point: Levine's book is truly great.

5-0 out of 5 stars the rose that grew from concrete
It has been a great inspiration and very deep in emotions, Tupac wa s and still is a great human being with all our ups and downs...a great man with a hard core, but very sensitive and deep in his thoughts..

5-0 out of 5 stars he was a thug, but he was deep...
the poems are raw and grimey...he shows you the pride of a pantha in his words. he was a gangsta, but he was also an intellectual and a philosopher; he had great pedigree( his mom was a black pantha ) his poems about her made me want to cry; he was better read than you think. he did so many things well: wrote poetry, danced, rap, made movies. seems like the most brilliant people are the most tragic and self-destructive. it's like god gave them an achilles heel to balance everything out. whenever i would read about him getting arrested or hear about drama he had been in, i thought he was just fronting his image, being a poser, because rappers were supposed to be like that. but i think he tried to please too many people. don'tcha hate people who have the world in the palm of their hand and they kiss it goodbye? He had money, he was popular, he could have any woman he wanted, yet he couldn't let the streets go....

5-0 out of 5 stars There will never be another Tupac Shakur
Tupac Shakur is a true poet and one of my idols... When I started reading "The Rose That Grew From Concrete", I was like "Dayum! This brutha is DEEP!" 5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure for any U2 fan
No words can describe the beauty, quality and detailed work of this book; you can really tell the dedication Anton Corbijn put into it, as well as his loyalty to the band through all these years. It's not only a masterpiece describing through pictures and notes the history of the greatest rock band in the world, but also a must have for any major U2 fan. It's personalized album type format makes it a wonderful experience both to read and look, and the quality and art work of all the pictures is out of this world; it's almost like you grow closer to the band! I loved it and can't get enough of it!!It's worth every cent. Really!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good backgrounder
The iconic photos in this book are an essential addition to any U2 fans collection. It's great to see other shots taken in the same session as the well known images that have graced the magazines and album covers over the years. Best of all are the explanations behind the shots and the honesty that comes across from the photographer and the band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious........
This book kept me laughing for hours on end. I am from the south and had an occasion to spend 6 months in Greenville, Miss. recently, so having been there, met lots of natives, etc. made it even more comical. While reading the book you can almost hear the accent of the "Southern Ladies" in conversation. Gayden really has a way of turning mundane everyday life in the Delta, into one hilarious situation after another. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and great recipes as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A taste of the deep south
I found this such a humorous and, for me, sentimental read. For each incident and character, I have enough life experiences in the deep south to be able relate the tale to characters and events in my past, including seeing ladies examine invitations from an angle to be sure they are engraved ("that beauty-graving is so tacky"). I am going to buy a couple copies for family members who I am sure will love this book as much as I do.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but I didn't like it that much
The book was recommended to me by an elderly Southern lady with a great sense of humor, so I had high hopes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Gift
I have received this book as a gift and have given it as a gift.It is wonderful! You can look at it for hours and still pick it up again and again. Also, you find that there are many more illusionists other than Escher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow.
This book is a wonderful overview of a lot of interesting artistic styles and mind-blowing techniques.Of course, you can buy more complete editions about the specific artists within this book, but I haven't seen such a variety of of artists and images put together in such a great way before. This was a great purchase, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in any of the artists within it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masters of Deception
This is an excellent resource. Anyone interested in visual illusion and the artists involved in creating it will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is difficult to get a chance to look at it, let alone read it, because someone else is always picking it up and becoming enthralled with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A different take on convergence
I can't say enough good things about this book. Jekins critiques "traditional" convergence theory about converging media and argues that the instigator of convergence is the need for new patterns of consumption, not production. Each chapter addresses how fans of a particular program reorganize their media experiences to better participate in the discussion, analysis and, at times, production of future episodes or events.
5-0 out of 5 stars The King of Culture
Henry Jenkins has a natural knack for taking any topic and making it instantly relatable and intensely gripping. I was privileged to have received a preview of part of this book before its publication, and I can honestly say that it's as entertaining as it is informative. Here he tackles completely new territory - the ever-evolving world of media and technology and how it impacts our society and the corporate world. This proverbial David & Goliath struggle for control of new media, the challenges of the inherent legalities, and the birth of new mediums; all of this complexity is laid out in the pages of 'Convergence Culture', and who better to guide us through this mish-mash landscape of new media than one of our foremost experts on media and popular culture?
