5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is "Frigg'n Sweet!!!"
If ever there was a humorous side to hyper-active, neglected and attention-deficient children, Robert Hamburger has found it! From cover to cover, "The REAL Ultimate Power" is chock full of childish hilarity counter-pointed by a very poignant under-belly displaying a fictional child's attempt to cope with being different and neglected. Yes, it's still HILARIOUS! Hamburger writes this essentially "for Dummies" spoof from the perspective of a learned 10-year-old kid who's inability to deal with his reality (parents he perceives as neglectful, friends who aren't his friends, etc.) leads him to be overly passionate (he calls it "pumped") about ninjas. I couldn't stop laughing! Not only are 99.9% of Robert's views on ninjas completely off-base and unrealistic (ah, childhood!), most times they're crude, disgusting, absurd and hilarious. Did you know that the defining characteristic of a ninja is the ability to "flip out and kill people" without the slightest provocation? Or that a BONER is the ninja's most prized weapon? Or that ninjas can fly? I, for one, was shocked to learn that Benjamin Franklin not only killed a man, but in the same night, laid in "feigned passion" with a sea turtle! These are just a few of Robert's skewed ideas, and they only get worse (or "better" if you're one to appreciate the humor!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Brain bending awesomness
This book is great the way it's told. The "Genius" spotlight review hit my thoughts exactly. Many people might not get all the subtle hints in the text and footnotes that tell the real story of a boy. That would be a shame. But if you liked the website, you'll like the book either way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really funny
One of the funniest books I've ever read. Had me laughing out loud like a fool during my commute. This book was AWESOME.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lewis is at it again...
From the author of several fantastic books, comes a great short synopsis leadership, motivation and team dynamics.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Players, Parents and Coaches
As a coach at a prep school, the experiences that Coach Fitz is dealing with are all too familiar.Michael Lewis puts together a touching work that causes the reader to stop and think.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Book
As a former High School and College Baseball player, and a current high school baseball coach, I have never read a book that epitomizes youth baseball today more than this one. Lewis' description of his experiences, and his coaches experiences, regarding todays parents/athletes could not be better. Every parent of a youth/high school athlete should read this book before they even consider complaining to their child's coach. I am only in my mid 20's and I can relate to many of the experiences described in this book. It's a very quick read as well. If I could give it 100 stars I would. For those readers who complained about the length of the book, yes it is a quick read but the book only costs 10 dollars.Anyone who is looking for a lengthy book should know not to purchase a book that is 90 pages long. For those of you who were, and then bought the book, that's your own fault.Great book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good and Very Funny
Even if you are not a golf fan I suggest you read this book. I am only a casual golf fan, and still found this book to be good. Reilly tells his experience with each golfer with a lot of humor and insight on how each one lives, plays the game of golf, and how they deal with certain aspects of the golf world and life itself. You will find yourself laughing out loud during this book (especially during his experience at The Masters). If you like golf, you will love this book! If you don't, you will still find it to be worth your time.

4-0 out of 5 stars LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY!
Laugh out loud funny - I own the book and this purchase was for a friend and colleage that appreciates the same dry wit and humor that I do. Rick Reilly strikes again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lauded SI writer - surprises inside
Still, he's a lauded SI writer, so don't expect Pulitzer Prize material, Augusta-Gate revealed, or John Daly's home number. This isn't for diehard golf fanatics who want to know what the pro's eat for breakfast, or who want a career-spanning synopsis of their impact on golf. This is a series of snapshots in time. Some loops last a couple of days, others a couple of hours.Either way, previous reviewers have hit the nail on the head by calling these (stories/chapters) a book of vignettes.

4-0 out of 5 stars The original survival book.
The book is extremely entertaining and it might save your life, too. It covers scenarios James Bond would aspire to.
5-0 out of 5 stars tongue in cheek
I enjoyed all of the worst case scenario books. There are several in the series. Each has a few helpful hints but is essentially packed with tongue in cheek advice about surviving various circumstances; your job, parenthood, and this book is a general survival guide.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
I bought this book for my son because it's on his "wish list." I laughed so loud in my bathroom that my husband thought I'd won the war with my grey hair again (I pluck them religiously). The book is so funny but matter-of-factly, I couldn't help but making mental notes when I read the section, "How to land a plane." Do I feel safer when I travel? You bet! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Hybrid of a Baseball Book
On the one hand, you have the Baseball Encyclopedia, which is an argument ender. On the other hand, you have, say, one of the Bill James Abstracts, which begins "let's start the arguin'".This book is in between.
3-0 out of 5 stars Average read
If you've been a baseball fan for 20 or more years, many of the blunders will sound very familiar, no new ground broken. On the other hand, if you're a rookie, you may find it very enjoyable.I appreciated Neyer's placing certain transactions in their proper context, especially the Brock trade, for which the Cubs have never been forgiven.Neyer, however, sorts outs all the facts and the trade, at that time, was about equal.Later on, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, the media blew it way out of proportion while conveniently ignoring the proper context of this deal. The use of win shares in analyzing selected transaction adds a new insight into the long range evaluation of whom got the edge in trades. A bunch of blunders are given real short treatment and one wonders why the author even bothered to include them. There were two baseball history errors in this book, which are inexcusable, especially by such an authority as Neyer.Curt Simmons is described as a right-handed starter while Dale Murray is listed as a left-handed reliever...now that's careless research. In brief, if you a veteran baseball fan, you could pass on this one; however, if you value win shares, you may enjoy its application to certain trades.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new nautical classic with great sailing insights
Kretschmer's new book about the bone chilling tail of a wrong way hurricane is bound to become a sailor's classic. Not only is the book a well written page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat, but it is filled with questions that every blue water sailor confronts when faced with difficult decisions at sea. Kretschmer's extensive knowledge of the subject is evident as he offers insights and thoughts about heavy weather strategy, survival tactics, and the decisions that were made by three brave sailors as they battled for their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Moving Book of the Sea
John Kretschmer has hit a home run with his new book - this is a very moving tale of the sea and hurricanes - and, even more, a moving tale of the people who go to sea on small sailing boats.I did not put the book down until it was finished. If you liked the Perfect Storm, this is better, partly because Kretschmer has been there himself, facing hurricanes on a small boat. This is a book about a tragedy, but is uplifiting at the same time. Great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!!! The BEST at this art!!
One of my favorite kinds of satire is the fake newspaper story -- one that uses the structure of REAL stories as a device to spark real roars of laughter due to the often brutal jokes that take on a special meaning in a once-serious context. I've actually dabbled in these myself, in my early years as a journalist, on my website's previous (now defunct) satire section and now on my existing wenblog.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
I laughed at every page of Andy Borowitz's book. He is truly a comic genius! It's a refreshing light-hearted look at the sad state of politics in the world today. After reading the funny satirical articles, I could go to sleep with a smile on my face instead of a furrow in my brow. The articles in the book read like newspaper articles with hysterical twists and turns - you'll laugh out loud and want to share the book with friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you loved Team America...
If you have seen Team America and loved it (I did) but wondered, where can I get more of evil Korean dictator Kim Jong Il, look no further: this is the book for you.Kim's evil face is smiling right there on the cover, and for a good reason: he "wrote" the introduction and an "exclusive" blog for this extremely funny book. The South Park guys have nothing on Andy Borowitz, who turns out to be an evil genius in his own right.I have never laughed so hard as I did at Kim's list of favorite records he would bring with him to as desert island if the world is destroyed (by him).

5-0 out of 5 stars Sole Sisters
I read this book in one sitting! I purchased the book for two running friends of mine and they passed it on to other fellow runners. This book helped me to think less about the physical act of running, but more about why I run and the friendships I have established while running. Those relationships have been a wonderful source of support and inspiration, very much like the wonderful stories told in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold coins
The vignettes within this book are poignant, touching, and downright real. One of my running friends handed this to me after a 12-mile Sunday morning trek, one (which like many others) allowed us to vent, analyze, and think about our lives. Reading this compilation truly drew me in, both as a runner and a woman. But don't let the chick peg fool you. My husband, who's been a runner for more than 25 years, picked it up and agreed: This is some solid, effective writing that rewards its readers with gold coins throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running is life.
The stories in "Sole Sisters" demonstrated a hidden dimension of life that is revealed through running- unshakable relationships formed with running buddies, self confidence discovered through training and kicking that 5K in the butt, and dissolving problems with each step along the trails. We can all learn from these stories. Everyone, not only runners, should read this gem of abook. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great read for the right golfer
This book should be read in conjunction with taking lessons from a qualified professional instructor. Its message is a valuable one, but not so much for the beginning golfer, and the book is quite clear in stating as much..At no time does the book pretend to be an instructional guide for those who've never played the game.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's more than a game
The main title, "It's Only a Game," is misleading.Jackie Burke, Jr. was born to the golf business. His father was a club pro, Burke, Jr. became a club pro, a tour pro and then co-founder of the Champions Golf Club in Houston, where golfers with only average skills need not apply. From the author's perspective, it's a business, and a serious one at that, not a game.Which is not to say that Jackie's a golf elitist--that would not be true either. The subtitle, "Words of Wisdom from a Lifetime in Golf," is a more accurate reflection of the book's contents, although not everyone is going to agree that all of Jackie's words are wise.Apparently Jackie sat down with Guy Yocom and/or a tape recorder and talked about his life in golf, and Yocom put his thoughts, extended sound bites if you will, together in book form.I particularly liked, and agreed with, his comments about the Ryder Cup and youth golf. And although the author distains the idea of golfing "tips," he gives you plenty, and I think, some very good ones.Others go against the grain.Jackie is not afraid to tell it like he sees it.Overall, a quick, fun, interesting read.I bounced between a two, three and four star rating, and ended up in the middle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Molly's review
I must say that this book is a bit more about improving your life than your golf game and Mr.Burke has lead an exceptional life to say the least. The book will improve your game ten fold but you will also look at life a bit different as well.Mr. Burke is a master of teaching about life through the game he so dearly loves.Wisdom abounds through these pages and you will read and re-read most of this whole book.Mr.Burke's dry humor is evident through-out the book which makes this an especially enjoyable read.Do yourself a favor,do not miss out on this man's hard earned wisdom,he did us all a favor by putting it in print. There are not many people in the world that say what everyone's thinking and this man does.He shows courage and unwavering knowledge on the game of golf, but never lets you forget "It's just a Game".

5-0 out of 5 stars Life lessons
Jack Burke has written a book not just for golfers, but for anyone desiring simple lessons of life. It's a fun, quick read, with lots of fascinating golf anecdotes. This book is one you can pick up and read bits at a time...or the whole book in a sitting. But you will find yourself returning to it...reading a chapter just for fun! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for the stories
John Feinstein broke out in the sports-book business with the million-seller 1987 book "Season On the Brink" and he hasn't looked back since. Like clockwork, Feinstein writes one book a year on some facet or another of sports, although clearly his love goes to college basketball and golf.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Repetitive But a Good Read, Nonetheless
Make no mistake: this is not John Feinstein's best work.Other reviewers have correctly pointed out it is repetitive, a bit too long, and he has a tendency to name drop to the point of kissing arse.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book- what about the Athletics
Good book. Could be better. Growing up in Philly as a die hard baseball fan I am dissapointed with the lack of information on the Athletics. Whether they left town 50 years ago or not, they are the city's most successful sports franchise. Period.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings
As a life long Eagles, Flyers, Phillies, and Sixers fan I felt this book was a must read, and if you too are a lifelong Philadelphia everything fan you too should read it.The only thing that I found dissapointing was the complete and total pessimism, which I should expect considering at least one of the authors worked for WIP.I understand that Philly fans are tired of losing, but sometimes (just as they do on the radio) they make it seem like Philadelphia is doomed when in fact the teams just never seem to be quite good enough.I'll stop giving my opinions on Philly sports now and let you know that if you are a Philly fan, you absolutely have to read this book.I'm 23, so i remember some of the stories such as the 93 phils, the Buddy Ryan era, and more recently the Sixers Eastern Conference Championship run. Some of the older stories were interesting for me to read as well, especially the chapter on the Broad Street Bullies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All
No book has ever dared to delve so deep into the unyielding heart of a Philadelphia sports fan than The Great Philadelphia Fan Book.Anthony Gargano and Glen MacNow, staples of Philadelphia's sports radio WIP and the city's sports scene itself took on the task and produced a gritty work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best
Arte Johnson really brings the book to life! Not that it wasn't already funny enough, but Johnson's memorable character voices make it positively hilarious. If you are a Dave Barry fan, but haven't heard some of his older work, you definitely will want to get this one.I loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Early Barry. . .
Though not as good as his later works, definitely worth buying, though 'Dave Barry's Guide To Life' is also availiable... and contains this and three other works of similiar quality and length by the same author, while being slightly cheaper than this edition alone.4-0 out of 5 stars Get ready for guttural laughter
Classic Dave Barry! A short read that you will read twice (at least). Get ready for Dave Barry's usual hilarious views, this time on working out and staying fit. If you have a fitness area in your home of office, this book belongs there. Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Humor about "Course" and "Off-Course" Moments
This book only lacks a knowledgeable introduction by a humorist, top golfer or pro, or cartoonist to make it a five-star offering.5-0 out of 5 stars Amusing Perspectives on Both Golfing and Flogging
At least to me, reviewing an anthology of cartoons resembles reviewing a performance by Marcel Marceau. Just as you really had to be there to see the performance to appreciate his talent, you really have to see the cartoons to appreciate their creators' talent. So, what to say now? First, that I am avid golfer and thus have a special interest in this volume, one of several in a series. Also, I am a long-time subscriber to The New Yorker and had already seen most of Robert Mankoff's selections as editor. I just wish I had aged as well as they have. Finally, if you love both golf (which is "flog" spelled backwards) and a good laugh, and no one else has as yet purchased The New Yorker Book of Golf Cartoons for you, don't begin dropping hints resembling anvils and then eagerly await the next birthday, anniversary, or holiday. Treat yourself to a copy TODAY. Amazon enables you to check out several of Robert Mankoff's selections as editor. Meanwhile, here's an excerpt from the dust jacket: "Mark Twain called it 'a good walk spoiled.' Lee Trevino said it was the most fun he ever had with his clothes on. For duffers and pros alike, golf can be both a delight and a torment -- often on the same day, sometimes on the same hole." Been there, done that. And, alas, will no doubt do so again...and again...and again. Fellow duffers, however badly you may play, you can count on this volume to entertain you later...and thereby help you to have the right perspective when you golf and/or flog your way through the next round.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect, brainy "no-brainer" gift for golfers.
Golfers are, almost without exception, fanatical and this book hilariously captures all the elements of the game - the joys and frustrations, the golfers and the golf widows, the pros and the duffers. ... Read more
