5-0 out of 5 stars For the pessimist in all of us
I have turned my copy into an autograph book; I have my friends and co-workers sign the quote that is most like them.My favorite:"Unlike me, the seasons serve a purpose."If that sort of thing makes you laugh, this book is for you... you cynic you!

5-0 out of 5 stars I gave myself a hacking cough from laughing so hard
This book is simply hilarious. It's a must read for cynics. My favorite is, "I have the worst life."

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you like to laugh out loud? Then get this!
Funny hilarity will ensue as you read these maxims for personal growth.A welcome respite to our age of self-help and self-analysis, that nonetheless contains at its core a philosophy of well-being that any twelve stepper or any hardened skeptic could be proud of. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Wish I Had Read This Book Two Years Ago
I think it really would have helped. This book is supposed to be daily affirmations, but basically is Stuart's year long diary. He is a member of several 12 step programs, and has really learned a lot from them, and has made friends who also attend them. One thing he hasn't learned from these meetings is leave his extremely dysfunctional family alone and quit trying to solve their problems for them. What I like about his book:
5-0 out of 5 stars I Can Enjoy This Book
I have read all of Al Franken's books up to this point with the exception of this one.I had been a fan of Franken since his days of Saturday Night Live, particularly his Stuart Smalley character. This book further demonstrates the depth and intelligence of his humor.5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny - great gift for people in Recovery
When Stuart Smalley first came out I didn't quite see the appeal. Now with 5 years in The Program, I finally get the joke.I have lent this book to a lot of folks in my home group and we all agree that it's pretty impossible not to laugh out loud while reading it.What a funny, smart insightful man.Seriously one of the funniest books I've ever read, though I might not have "gotten it" without my familiarity with 12 step programs. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Pick Me Up
Even God is Single is a wonderfully irreverent look at all the reasons why being single is not the end of the world and may even be a plus. Not only is it well written but the illustrations are fabulous.Never let anyone dare question your single status again.Buy the book if you or a friend needs a good laugh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Let Me Be ...
Let me be single. I do not want to get married. Thank you for this fun and interesting book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet
This one is shorter than most of Karen Salmansohn's books, but it certainly is sweet. Marriage is not the be-all and end-all of life in the 21st Century !!Of course, if you do want to change your status, check out her new book for 2003 -- "How To Change Your Entire Life By Doing Absolutely Nothing" -- which I also enjoyed very much. 5-0 out of 5 stars Dammit this book is Great!
I always think I like self-help books until I read one. This book however is just enough hudspah? to make it a worthwile read.I kept it in the bathroom and when in need of a little dose of reality and get up and go, i would open it up.It tells it like it is and with beautiful digital photos. This book is a great read and a great gift for anyone in a bit of a wallow.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulousness
I loved this book. The lessons in it, are an owners manual for the success driven mind and a great gift for people of all ages. It's self help with the delight of a great kids book. If Tony Robbins and Pinnochio had a kid, this would be it.
5-0 out of 5 stars dump those bad habits, baby!
I never thought Id have funreading a self help book -- but Karen Salmansohn is not only insightful, she comes up with fun metaphors that make me laugh as I learn. She talks about how we were brainwashed by our childhood but its more like being braindirtied...and how we have to see stressful thigns wiht pain-a-ramic vision...with a 360 degree perspective that reveals the happy lesson to be learned...the gain from pain... I loved this book! And I love this author's website[...] A must read for anyone trying to break a bad pattern! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The only self help book ever to make me smile
I am not kidding, this book is a wonderful, hilarious cheerer-upper. Plus, it makes you feel like it's ok to not have to be all "hey look at me I'm having the time of my life living happily after like in Pretty Woman or some other romantic comedy." My only criticism is that it does get repetitive after a while. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. Overall, a wonderful book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Irreverent Humor
I work in a bookstore and came across this book while shelving my humor section. It gave me a refreshing break from some of the books I deal with on a daily basis in my self improvement section. As another reviewer noted, it should make you feel worse if you feel bad, but it doesn't!! It helps you take yourself a little less seriously.Clearly you wouldn't give this book to a person who is clinically depressed.I'm giving it to my nephew for his college graduation. He has a healthy skepticism about the world and will enjoy this tongue-in-cheek look at life. One quote that struck a chord with me: "Your kids are nothing special. They're just like everyone else's kids." Made me laugh and I'll better handle the next person I come in contact with who goes on and on about their 4 year old reading Grapes Of Wrath .... I'll think of that line and smile. One caution: If you do not appreciate jibes taken at religion (ALL religions), don't read that section!

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book.
I found this book just laying out in a parking lot so i picked it up and started reading this funny, so-true book.it's brilliant. At first i just laughed really hard at all the funny little comments but then i actually found that it helped me when i was feeling down.I don't know, it seems like it should just make you feel worse but in some odd way, it makes you feel better. I guess it kind of makes you feel like everyone else in this world is feeling the same and you don't feel weird about everything thats wrong in your life.I'm mad because i gave this book to my boss to read and he lost it so now I'm going to buy it again. I miss having this book around to make me laugh when I'm feeling like crap. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Funtastic and Clean Humor
Barbara Johnson is a joy! Her sense of humor and writing style make this an exjoyable book. Unlike most humor writers, her style is clean and wholesome...no vulgarities.Recommended to every woman who is approaching or is in middle age or older, and is looking at peri-menopause and beyond with dread instead of anticipation. This book is uplifting.!There is some humor that is a bit "corny", but it's a laughable kind of corny.Definitely "thumbs up" for this work!

1-0 out of 5 stars For Older Readers
I'm 49, post-menopausal, and I love the Golden Girls, Erma Bombeck, and The View, but that type of sharp humor is not in this book. This author's humor is mild and corny, with LOTS of capitalized words. You know, for EMPHASIS! That said, it's pleasant to read. Companionable, but not terribly compelling. A nice book for the nightstand, to pick up now and then.

3-0 out of 5 stars They Are Called 'The Golden Years' For Sure.
This book is "For Women Only" as the seal on the front cover shows. She is somewhere between Erma Bombeck and Fanny Flagg with her type of humor and sayings. This volume was written for those with a sense of humor but, if you've heard all that homespun advice, it's not so funny anymore.

2-0 out of 5 stars Little new here
Most likely anyone who's been around the rooms on a regular basis for more than a few months has heard most of what is in here...And that which they haven't heard is otherwise predictable. Unfortunately, most "recovery humor" is best suited to the feeble and middle brow humor of 60's and 70's Readers Digest, and this book is no exception. It's just plain corny and it's really not very funny. Addiction and recovery can be so dark and edgy; it would be nice to see some of that reflected in the literature and humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dont take yourself so seriously.
A lot of funny items within the book.It is a really great way of carrying the AA message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and touching
I just read this book and find it not only funny but thought provoking. It made me think of some of the things that were going through my head early in my recovery. As a recovering addict/alcoholic I find it refreshing that someone besides myself can find humor in some of the past (and sometimes present) behaviors. I would highly recommend this book to other people in recovery. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New
This book is 116 pages with a lot of wasted space.Lots of empty pages and illustrations so not much actual information given. We all know that humor helps to reduce stress. I was looking for more practical informationI guess. I mean it's O.K. but I didn't really learn anything new here.Sorry

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Practical
As a stand-up comic and a person who uses humor in my "real-world" jobs, I found Ms. Jasheway's book to be a fun and practical approach to reducing stress in the workplace. So many peoplethese days complain about the amount of stress in their lives but think theonly things they can do to relieve it is to reduce their coffee intake andstart working-out.They feel they have to listen to tapes with subliminalmessages or practice yoga.Yet nothing reduces the amount of tension weare carrying around like a good laugh. Some people feel that humor has noplace on the job, that it means you're goofing off and not working, andyet, as Ms. Jasheway explains, humor frees the mind and body to better dothe jobs we have at hand. And unlike so many of the silly tools we aregiven at work in seminars or workshops, these are skills and tools that wecan use anywhere to relieve stress and promote creativity.I highlyrecomend this book to anybody willing to lighten up a little and have morefun in their lives, both on the job and at home. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars To make a Freudian slip on a banana peel
Freud did not see jokes as minor nonsense and insignificance. He saw them as deeper messages delivered to us from our unconscious. He saw them as telling the secrets about ourselves to ourselves and the world that we do not necessarily want to tell. He saw them as acts of aggression and as acts of self- defense. In fact Freud is one of the few theorists of jokes and laughter that the world has had. In my opinion while Freud's understanding of jokes is not exhaustive and all- comprehensive it does illuminate much about a certain kind of humor. And it does teach us something about ourselves which we had not really noticed before Freud taught it to us. Freud himself is of course a source of endless jokes today , but it is not wrong to say that at least some of these jokes should be about his great genius and ability to see and say where others before him did not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Freud loosens up a little
The logic of Freud can sometimes be overbearing when he is dealing with the makings of a joke. However, he does at times seem to drop his guard, speak in easy to understand terms, and give information that can be understood. If anyone is pursuing comedy in any form, this book would be helpful, and will help you compare your analyzation of what you do with someone who knew very well how the human mind worked.I've applied several of his concepts on stage and have found them successful. ...
