5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Update
This is a new update to a LCL volume that was from 1913.It contains the text of Persius' (A.D. 34-62) and Juvenal's (circa A.D. 127) satires. The update is really well done. The introduction provides an excellent introduction to the genre and a background on the transmission of the text.
3-0 out of 5 stars Servicable but in dire need of revision
This Loeb Classical Library edition of Juvenal and Persius was first published in 1918 and was last revised in 1940.The translations are servicable, but this particular volume badly needs the revision that otherLoeb volumes have been receiving under the skilled hand of G.P. Goold, currently general editor of the series. The translations of the Juvenalsatires in the current volume have been censored where Juvenal wasevidently felt by the standards of 1918 to have been too indecent (cf.II.49-50 for an example; the Latin, however, is untouched). While one canunderstand the reticience of the editor given his era, this censorshipshould really be remedied in a future revision (as it has been in the Loeb"Catullus" edited by Goold).Until then Peter Green's finetranslation for Penguin contains a complete rendering which will allow thereader to judge for himself or herself whether or not to be shocked by whatJuvenal says.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful
This translation of Juvenal is masterfully done, with both the original latin and English translation in a small and easy to carry book.Juvenal is to satire what Shakespeare was to the play. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spark's First Endures
Muriel Spark's first novel, THE COMFORTERS, is a genuine classic. The intrustion of the "literary device" is marvelous because it is anything but a gimmick. For one thing, the mysterious metafictionaltypewriter (from an author composing a novel you might be reading) isinspired by experiences Spark describes in her autobiography.Auralhallucinations contributed to two masterpieces of English prose around thistime--Evelyn Waugh's THE ORDEAL OF GILBERT PINFOLD takes a differentapproach, less cosmic and perhaps more comic. In both cases, however, thevoices are central to the novel, and provide a marvelous opportunity forconveying a unique (and, I think, in both cases, -true-) view of ourworld.4-0 out of 5 stars What's it all about?
This book's weakest point--a literary gimmick--kicks in early: a writer begins to hear a voice narrating her life, accompanied by, you guessed it, the clicking of typewriter keys. However, as annoying as this trite littledevice is, it has all but disappeared midway through the book, letting asomewhat more complex concept take over. The plot itself involvessmuggling and tangled relationships, with a wink at English Catholicism. In the end, I've given this book four stars primarily because I enjoyed thesetting, somewhere between the worlds of "Lucky Jim" and"Excellent Women." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Didactic Poetry
Horace's collection of Satires and Epistles have always been left in the shadows of his Odes and Epodes due to this very reason--that they are didactic rather than aesthetic. In this work, Horace gives modest moral and social instruction to his correspondents, while in his Odes and Epodes his lust for life and the beautiful give the reader something much more palatable to digest. What one will find here that may be the of most value is his Ars Poetica, which hands the novice some well-gained advice on how to write good poetry. This work also furnishes itself as an excellent historical source into the world of the Augustan Age.Overall, it must be said that these poems are not quite as entertaining as his Odes and Epodes, yet the reader must consider Horace's purpose in writing them before making any rash judgements. The Norton Editions are of course one of the most trustworthy texts to be found and for the price listed this one is incomparable with any others available. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to your collection
Well worth having in your personal collection -- very entertaining. :)

3-0 out of 5 stars an ABRIDGED version
I'd skip this and purchase the UNABRIDGED version. Some of the definitions left out in this version are among Bierce's best. Also, the complete work is not so long: no reason to abridge something that in full length is only 100 or so pages long.

5-0 out of 5 stars An American classic
This should be on your shelves right next to Roget's and Bartlett's. It's not just one of the funniest assemblages in the English language, it's a standard reference. Although written over a hundred years ago, most of it is just as fresh as today's headlines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic observations of New York society
What could be funnier, then reading about yourself in a book that takes liberty to poke fun at your foibles? That is what Sholom Aleichem does here in this masterful translation of some of his greatest work.Starting with "Progress in Kasrilevke" if you know that he is really describing New York, you will start to see what I mean.Sholom Aleichem's visual descriptions create symbols that keep the characterizations clear. This is great art and translator Curt Leviant, does an inspired job with an idiomatic Yiddish that has been called "untranslatable."Far from it.However, keep in mind that some expressions are nearly impossible to translate, so if you come across something like "hardy hoe" just remember that this is a work of translation. For example, 'You're welcome' is 'nito far vos' - which literally translates as "There's not for what."Your reading pleasure won't be bothered by this, Curt Leviant captures the spirit of Sholom Aleichem's writings like few translators before or since. Leonard Nimoy says that, "Sholom Aleichem was one of the very few modern writers who speaks for an entire people", and "his work reaches beyond the small world of Yiddish and has captivated readers from many different countries." Arguably, Sholom Aleichem's greatest achievement was "Tevye, the Dairyman", but this collection of stories contains masterpieces that will become lifetime favorites. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars afternoon fun
what a nice book...there are so many truths in there which even my aunt has shared with us after college, like afternoon sex and dating your boss. Anyways, while this is a bit of a dated book, it is funny, witty and presents a lighter side of an otherwise tabou topic (in most families, not in ours!).

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Crazy After All These Years
During my freshman year of college one of my friends gave me this book for my birthday.I was slightly shocked to receive it, but after one week it was well worn through by nearly every girl on our floor. It wasn't really so much about sex but more about being a single woman and dealing with things like being boy crazy and whining about the lack of quality men.
1-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous
Well, I am torn between giving this book 1 or 5 stars. If taken seriously, 1 is too generous a number. However, my friends and I enjoy her ridiculous takes on such timeless issues as race relations, father fixations, masturbatory techniques, zen and the art of diaphragm insertion, and a guide to horniness (symptoms include nauseau, blurred vision, and SARS like sickness), to name a few.
