4-0 out of 5 stars Good book...poor edition
I liked the book, as it was one I would not have read myself. It was for class, and the rest of the calss bought theirs from the campus store (usually more expensive) and I got mine from Amazon and Dover. The class' edition was twice as helpful to read, due in a large part to the in-depth analysis in the intro and other included additional writings.

3-0 out of 5 stars I can't resist!
The only known collection of Pantomime Jokes and sketches in captivity?4-0 out of 5 stars Small but seriously nuggetish
Paul Harris's 140 page book is a serious tease. It is exactly what the archivists and enthusiasts want, although, as both, I would have wanted something ten times the size. How could we ever capture the ether of pantomime set pieces? Harris has done a fine job of putting these sketches both into print and into context.Without his work, we would certainly have lost the jokes at which 1,000,000 people per annum laugh. For your information, we are talking about some seriously old jokes here, including one from the 1670s.That's pantomime for you! His modest aim has been to take the unwritten humour of Dan Leno and Jack Tripp and capture it for those of us who have been brought up in and around pantomimes. The result is a series of sketches and comedy routines which look good on paper but, I promise you, look fantastic on stage. If ever you want to find a routine for a piece of slapstick, traditional pantomime or children's theatre, look no further.Paul, howzabout a second edition with lots more? Finally, I'd like to use the WWW to apologise publicly to my commuting companions who must have thought me two sandwiches short of a picnic whilst reading this book on the train each morning.I know, for sure, that it got me to work a happier and jollier person.Oh yes, it did! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hysterical!
I bought this book after flipping to the "Table of Equivalents" for common drugs and cracked up in the store, laughing like a loon at the home equivalent of Valium ("Old English 800 + mild Concussion + Best of Burt Bacharach on CD," I think it was). Great stuff! It had me in stitches. Ok, it's not deep, but it's really fun to pass around to your friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great price
I am quickly becoming a fan of the Dover Thrift editions of classic literature. They are well-made, sturdy, and a great bargain. All of them that I have bought and assigned to my students have been $2.50. What can you buy for $2.50 anymore? Now you can have an entire library of unabridged classics at a more than reasonable rate.
4-0 out of 5 stars A lazy edition
A proper critical account of Swift's text would exceed by far the space given here. As someone doing scholarly work on Gulliver's Travels, I would merely like to point out that Mr. Rivero's edition is a bit confusing. For some reason, he has decided that it was a good idea to move the letter prefacing the text to the end (which, as the "Advertisement" itself says should be "prefixed" to the volume). The critical apparatus is truly commonsensical, and at times, reduces the novel to a sad, straightforward allegory. One would only wish that the criticism section were as interesting as it is extensive. All this said, there is nothing violently "wrong" with this edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings
This book was brilliantly written relating the human nature of the time. Whoever criticizes it for the lack of character development, does not fully understand the nature of the book. It is a satire, Swift purposely wrote as little as possible about the main character so we won't relate to him. His purpose was to compare the creatures he met on each of his voyages to the English government and politicians. Even though he was pretty accurate about the politics of the time, he was too negative. Yes, it is the human nature to be corrupt, greedy, selfish and all the other things he mentioned in his book. But people also express kindness, love and compassion and he failed to convey any of that in his work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Translation by Martin.Highly Accessible.
After doing a lot of research into Catullus translations for a class, I picked this book. His edition is 1) complete and 2) consistently good. His use of modern slang and idioms is pretty convincing, and this isabsolutely crucial since Catullus' poetry involves so much use of livelystreet expressions.Catullus selections in anthologies almost neverreproduce the really filthy poems... I highly recommend the complete Martintranslation for a more balanced view! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Academia Transfixed
'On the Shoulders of Giants' (which shall hereafter be referred to as OTSOG) is the quintessential study of the nature of academicism. It is thinly disguised as a dissertation into the origin (and originality) of Newton's famous aphorism 'If I have seen farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.'However, once the reader finds himself confronted by what might or might not be an attack on Richard Burton (the one that wrote 'The Anatomy of Melancholy'), suspicions grow, and in short order one begins to understand that a leg or two is being pulled.5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular

with Sterne. He comes off third best. First, of course, is the masterhimself. Second, comes Umberto Eco for his witty, catholic and eruditeForward. Nonetheless, Merton treads where no others have dared in hisre-creation of the "Shandean" style. For this, alone, he deservescredit (and reading.) Because Merton chose real characters it wasinevitable he failed to reach the pinnacle achieved in Sterne's fictionalmaster-creation: Uncle Toby--one of the great characters in all literature.Do read Merton, and Tristram Shandy. ...
