1-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious pap
You can tell what this person really thinks of the medium of the comic book by the very fact that she feels she needs to justify reading them. Does anybody ever feel like they must justify reading a book or watching a film unless they consider it trash? This book is just insulting to anyone who enjoys words and pictures used together to tell a story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine British literary gem with fabulous nuanced dialogue!
The British writer Henry Green's literary skill went far beyond a comedy of manners, which this book appears to be on the surface. Dense with meaning, "Nothing" is a short literary gem, which forces the reader to read a million nuances into the witty and yet deeply dense conversations which make up the entirety of the book. The story is set in 1948 and follows John and Jane, now middle aged but still reminiscing about an affair they had many years before when they were still married. They both have new relationships, Liz and Richard, but still see each other frequently for meals or for tea.Their respective children, Mary and Philip, are now grown and want to marry. But of course there are complications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unabashedly charming and delightful novel
With a little patience, the reader will quickly adjust to the rhythms of one of English literature's most unique, and until recently, nearly forgotten novelists; and in the process enjoy an utterly and unabashedly charming and delightful novel. Years after having an affair that almost ruined their respective marriages, Jane Weatherby and John Pomfret are reunited when their children decide to get married despite questions regarding their possible kinship and the fact that they have almost no money to their name. Afraid that Mary Pomfret and Philip Weatherby are destined for the working-class, Jane and John attempt to stall the development of the wedding plans by having endlessly witty conversations about, well, nothing. This gives Jane -- a shrewd, resourceful widow -- the opportunity to embark on a scheme to lure John away from his current love interest. As the plot advances through discussions filled with misdirections and omissions, Green demonstrates that there is nothing like the spoken word to conceal one's true intentions, yet at the same time reveal everything. One of Green's final novels, Nothing is a worthy addition to the varied tradition of English literature that includes Virginia Woolf and Evelyn Waugh. Fans of Austen, Forster, and Wharton should also be rewarded. Green's masterful description of the novel's centerpiece alone -- an as-if-you-were-there party -- is worth the price of purchase. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Owed to Horace
This may be a fine book of translation but on the whole it is not poetry.Compare versions of any ode translated by Alexander and Ferry and you'll see: Alexander is working with language, Ferry is working with poetry. If you want Horace's poetry, buy the Ferry text.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Odes and Satires of Horace (Lockert Library of
A brilliant translation that takes a one-time "required reading" to a new plane. Lively, witty, enjoyable makes Horace a man for the next millenium. Sadly I must tell your readers that the translator SidneyAlexander, a wonderful renaissance scholar who has written extensively on Michaelangelo has died (Dec. 11,1999) at the age of 87.

5-0 out of 5 stars now easily the best Horace in English!!!
This translation by Sidney Alexander kicks David Ferry's in the butt, no exaggeration!David Ferry's absurdly popular version is wildly overhyped, with his friends in academia lining up to contribute glowing blurbs for thecover.Believe me, this is THE translation of Horace that you will want toread and re-read! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The decadence of Nero's Rome
Follow the bawdy adventures of Encolpius through the4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the squeamish, but very amusing
This is all that remains of what was apparently a much longer work - unless Petronius' allusions to lost episodes of the text are merely for effect, which they might be. The best known of the surviving sections is "Trimalchio's Dinner-party", which is devoted to a description of a vulgar and opinionated self-made man with much more money than sense or learning. The satire is razor-sharp. The book revolves around the misadventures of Encolpius (who is impotent), his lover Ascyltus, and Giton, for whose sexual favours the two of them quarrel bitterly. No account of the book would be quite complete with mentioning that little detail; so let the buyer beware. After Encolpius and Ascyltus split up, Encolpius and Giton fall in with Eumolpus, who is a thorough con man and generally a complete scoundrel. And of the same tastes as the others. Petroniusdrops his characters in one compromising situation after another - and leaves them to get themselves out. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My, my, my, what an excellent book.
Wow! I could not believe how remarkably crispy this book was. I mean the pages were just crisp with crispness. You know how when sometimes you're reading a book and you think to yourself "Dam! This book is crispy!"? Well, when you read this book, it will make you think that. Are you ready to ascend to new levels of crispiness? Then reading this handsome man's audacious study of the crisp. I found particularly interesting the area where he compares Lacan's mirror stage to Ralph Ellison's novel: "THE CRISP FACTOR". What a tight, irresistable thriller!

5-0 out of 5 stars Studies the role and purpose of satire as a literary genre
Darryl Dickson-Carr's African American Satire is recommended for college-level audiences; this studies the role and purpose of satire as a literary genre in African-American writings. Afro-American literature and the history of satire are concurrently studied in chapters which argue that major works by Hughes, Ellison and other should be viewed as satires in order to fully appreciate their meaning. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Long, At Times Boring, But Somehow "Interesting"
Basically I recommend this book which I "read" as a book on tape. The theme is "a man's life"---and the "emptiness of life"-------and the search for "the meaning of life". You may perceive certain aspects of YOUR life in the life storyof Mr. Babbitt. Thus, you finish the book with the idea,"Hey, this author understands me"....."I'm not alone."Other people have intermittantfeelings of "meaningless of life" and I'm not alone."You probably will get "bored" with some long-winded passages but overall the book is worth reading.Don't expect any "deep answers" to the meaning of life. But, the book does have a "satisfying" ending.Email:boland7214@aol.co

5-0 out of 5 stars What life was like for conservative Republicans in the 1920s
I like books about the retro-suburbs.Two years ago, I read "Man In The Gray Flannel Suit" which took place in suburban 1950s.So I wanted to go back even further to see what life was like in the suburbs in the 1920s.
2-0 out of 5 stars Drab
This book was utterly boring. It is a cutesy attempt at satire, only the entire time, I kept thinking, "Edith Wharton did it better." The problem with Lewis's version of what a satire is is that satire is supposed to be subtle; outright criticism of the characters and lifestyles is almost insulting to the reader's intellect.

Let's face it: Real Men have reached the cataracts of the Nile, they've penetrated the depths of the Amazon.com jungle, they've walked on the moon (remember Alan Shepard's 5000 yard birdie on the universe's only 1,000,000 hole course?), and they went head-to-head with Nazi scum on D-Day, and won. But no Man, however Real, has ever been able to penetrate the mysteries of the female mind or the secrets of her natural domain, the kitchen. (Hey, Nancy, sit down and don't complain, this is a Real Man Review!)
