A good collection, but...
For starters, I can't fault that there is indeed a vast amount of excellent literature in this book, including full editions of some shorter novels. While some of it is familiar, there's a good amount of obscure or hard-to-find inclusions.
Pick Up A Copy To Own!
The Malcontents is intended as a definitive anthology of the greatest satirical writing the world has ever seen. Yet right from the start, it becomes apparent that the book has one major flaw. For Whom Is This Book Compiled?
The cover says that this is the "Best bitter, cynical, and satirical writing in the world." That such is the case is highly questionable, but let's not quibble about that. I already own much of this material so I was a bit let down about that. Read more

The best ever intro to Mark Twain
My dad had the original hardback edition of this book in the early 60's, when it was first compiled.I read this book dozens of times, to the point where the covers were torn off and pages were missing.

Excellent Translation
Rudd's translation is a pleasure to read. He manages to stick closely to the Latin of Juvenal while also conveying the livelinessand humor of the Satires. I would recommend it not only for a student who is struggling through the Latin, but also the casual reader.

Juvenal's Satires
Juvenal is best understood when you liken his satire to drama. You're actually not supposed to identify with the speaker. The satirist's harsh indignance forces you to be skeptical in the way you read, and the way you look at the world. Rudd has produced a good translation, and his preference for generalizing over historical specifics is helpful for most readers, though slightly prohibitive for the student. Adequate notes and helpful introduction.Read more

A great find.
I actually stumbled into this book because of my interest in the art of Grant Wood.I purchased an old special edition of Main Street that was illustrated by Wood.After enjoying the illustrations, I decided that I might as well read the book.Well, that led to Babbitt and Elmer Gantry (with two more on order.)As I looked for Sinclair Lewis books, I saw this biography by Lingeman and was impressed by the great reviews (and the low price of used copies.)I decided to give it a try.In biographies, I mainly read about Victorian scientists but I have enjoyed a few political and artist's bio's. I did not know what I was in for with this incredibly interesting 554 page story of one of the most interesting people I can imagine.Lingeman is a master who combines an incredible amount of research with a writing style that will make you feel as if you are reading a page-turner of a novel.If you have read this far without buying the book of course you are interested in Sinclair Lewis so go ahead, buy the book, and enjoy it.

Justice
Schorer's 1961 biography of Lewis, while well researched, came off as particularly mean-spirited. I could never understand why a biographer would take on the huge task ofan exhaustive biography when they seem to distain it's subject so much. Interesting and enjoyable
Okay, I haven't read Mark Schorer's earlier biography, but I have read a number of other critical works about Lewis over the years, and more than half of Lewis' twenty-odd novels.Read more

I just read this book.I wish I could tell the author how much I appreciated it.

The book adds to the dialogue about teaching Huck Finn.

Good set of essays; not Wolfe's best
Tom Wolfe pursues the idea that many Americans and Brits since World War II have been checking out of mainstream status competition in favor of pursuing status within distinct subcultures. This plays out in some interesting ways--most notably Wolfe watches Natalie Wood pursue status in a more traditional way by acquiring knowledge of art and even some Old Masters, while others play their own status game around photographing celebrities, in this case Wood herself. Essays on Hugh Hefner, California surf culture, and London mods are also worthwhile, as is a comic piece on Wolfe's misadventures with an "automated hotel". Wolfe does bog down at times, however, in the minute stylistic details of the groups he covers; if you are not that interested in style in and of itself, your eyes may glaze over those passages. Still, this is a good read for anyone interested in subcultures (especially of the 1960s) and status-seeking.

Tom Wolfe is brilliant in capturing a generation's feel. This collection of short stories describes the socialites, the freaks and the trend-setters. Wolfe's language manages to show the physical as well as theatmosphere within a few short sentences.
