4-0 out of 5 stars Baboons in the Mist
This was a humorous and entertaining book, though it could use a bit of editing. It's hard to believe that such an educated person could fall prey to the various scams. I enjoyed reading about the cultural differences and refreshing perceptions Mr.Sapolsky endured and experienced.

5-0 out of 5 stars compassion and intellect
Robert Sapolsky writes with the compassion of David Quammen, the challenging intellect of Stephen Jay Gould and the dedication of E.O. Wilson! He engages his readers, he charms them and he treats them as kindred spirits. If I wasn't an atheist I would thank God for Robert Sapolsky.

5-0 out of 5 stars AFearful Symmetry
Sapolsky artfully interweaves 3 stories. The parallels are amazing as he recounts his experiences studying a baboon troop in Kenya, and the human troops he encounters in his work and travels throughout Africa. The third story is his development from adolescent subadult to mature scientist and fully adult, competent human. This book reads like an action packed novel, while impartingscientific truth within the context of a broad systemic paradigm. Sapolsky is able to think objectively, while acknowledging the compelling power of his own emotional responses. He is clear aboutwhich is which and the limitations of each. The choice to rigorously utilize both results in a rich tale that offers the reader a view ofcomplex connections, vivid similarities and profound humbling differences. This pattern of both and, holds true at the level of the individual, the community, the culture as well as across species.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow, blissful tears....
I was afraid to order this book at first because I am such a huge animal lover and get very distressed when I hear stories about animals who have been abused or abandoned. I literally get nightmares when I read about animals who are suffering and I wasn't sure if this book would be more upsetting then pleasurable since I knew many of the dogs would have tragic tales before adoption. My experience with this book: got it today, sat down on the sofa with it and simply could not put it down. I read every story and even though many of them were tragic they really didn't dwell on the horrific past in a way that made me uncomfortable. I did cry but they were slow, blissful tears that often melted into the edges of an unforseen smile. These stories are some of the most uplifting, gorgeous stories I have ever read and the photos that accompany them are beautiful, often spontaneous portraits of owners embracing their saved animals. In every furry face you can see the joy and the gratitude and the extinguished pain. They are saved and they are home and it burns your eyes and warms your heart and leaves you shivering in goose pimples. I am SO glad I decided to order this book! It's a must have for anyone who loves dogs.

Photography has always been an outlet to certain visionaries in our society. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you've worn out your Twain, try Jayne
Sure, Mark Twain was pretty good, but what's he done lately? The Greatest Living American Humorist (take that, Garrison Keillor!) you've never heard of is Mitch Jayne who, like Twain before him, is a Missourian and a storyteller par excellence. As a founding member of The Dillards, Jayne regaled bluegrass audiences with his country store brand of whimsy before "retiring" to a second career as a humor columnist for newspapers and magazines. The bedrock of Jayne's humor has always been his adopted home, the Ozarks, a region apparently supernaturally fertile for producing bushels of funny stuff. "Home Grown Stories..." is Jayne's autumnal harvest of a lifetime spent soaking up the peculiar language of a peculiar people in a peculiar land and his magician's trick of making you homesick for a place you've never been.5-0 out of 5 stars All True, All Lies
I have read this book and all the reviews of it. Both the book and the reviews are entirely true. How any educated or uneducated person can live without it is beyond my understanding except that most of the Ozarks now has indoor plumbing. Mitch Jayne and his wife, Diana, have written a wonderful book that combines verbal and visual humor. Diana has given us sketches that are funny and real and honest. Mitch has given us stories with bark on them that remind us why people love the Ozarks as tears roll down their face from laughter. But lest you think this is a book of jokes, be warned. It is also book written in a graceful style about life in and out of the Ozarks and the English language that separates the Ozarker from Americans. Only Donald Harington and Vance Randolph have been able make such a combination work. Add Mitchell F. Jayne of the Dillards and Darling Boys to that list.

5-0 out of 5 stars A piece of Home in my pocket
I took HOME GROWN STORIES with me on vacation. The characterss are sotrue and the images so vivid, it was as if I carried a piece of home in mypocket.Jayne's literary canvas is large, the quiet Missouri hills, thefolk music road, Hollywoodand TV; but he paints his stories with suchattention to detail that the reader is totally drawn in. I especiallyloved the one-room school stories, they are both nostalgic and timely as wewatch so many unique folkways disappear.Jayne's gentle, butunshakable respect for the human spirit teaches us in a way that noanthropological observor or firey evangelist ever could. This collectionwill entertain and enlighten all those fortunate enough to get there handson it. Absolutely enjoyable! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Is Brown Insane or Merely a Liar?
If you're going to gloss yourself as "America's Greatest Outdoorsman," you should offer more to your readers than juvenile, New Age adventure stories. This book holds more snickers than the M&M Mars wharehouse.
1-0 out of 5 stars Can't he use any more descriptive words?
I bought this book yesterday from Barnes and Nobels bookstore.I liked the title and thought, "This might be a good read."I read half of it yesterday. The book was so monotonous. He keeps using the word "Cenntrical ring" and "track" too much.I couldn't get past a page without reading the word track. It became so repetitive that it was chore to continue reading this book.I hated it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as the other reviews say...
First full disclosure...this was the first book I've read by Tom Brown, after the title caught my interest in the bookstore. Also, after initially starting it, I did the standard Internet search to find out who he was and what he was about.

5-0 out of 5 stars McDonald's Books - a Survival Tool for any Life Crises
Betty McDonald's books are timeless due to their wit, hilarity, wonderfully descriptive language, and their author's determination to find the positive or "funny" in any catastrophic situation, whether personal--failing marriage, or national--the Great Depression. She brings her environment and experience to life to such a degree that you literally smell, taste, and feel her words. When she's talking about food, you crave it; when she writes about gardening, you get the urge to go plant something, and when she describes the people close to her, you start missing your friends and family. Above all, however, her humor will help you through any crises of your own. It has helped me through quite a few, and I keep returning to her books over a decade after I have discovered them.
5-0 out of 5 stars The voice of Truth
Long before it was acceptable for women to tell the absolute truth about relationships and marriage, Betty MacDonald did!Her hilarious, self-deprecating story validates all of the feelings many women have experienced. She was a gifted writer and injected humor into the most normal circumstances.Betty loved her family and they, in turn, supported her.Her life was not without trauma - the depression, the loss of her father, her bout with TB, her failed marriage, and an over-riding aura of not-quite-poverty, but certainly not-enough-to-get by, could have defeated her. These circumstances strengthened her, and we are the benefactors. This book defies time.It is truly a classic by anymeasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars TIMES HAVE CHANGED SINCE 1945, BUT BETTY MACDONALD'S HUMOUR LIVES ON
I can remember my mother reading this book fifty years ago, and even though she has long since passed away, to this day I can still hear her laughter while reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars NORTON LIVES ON
I liked this book, the sequel to "Norton, The Cat Who Went to Paris." This beautiful Scottish Fold with the folded ears is no longer a baby kitten, but a playful full grown cat who travels the world with his owner. Here the reader will learn of Norton's adventures in Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain and his ability to win audiences along the way.Wherever Norton goes, he is given the red carpet treatment.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages- whethere cat lover or not
A guy friend bought the Norton books for me when I was having a tough day. He said these will cheer you up! I thought it was comical....and they sat on my shelves for awhile. Then I thought he went to the trouble of getting those books specifically for me that I should give them a go. I could not put them down. Norton is intriguing and his adventures are fun to read. Even better is the style, wit and genuis of Peter Gethers. His life is SO interesting. I would ready any book by him any day!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Charming Book
When I found Peter Gethers had continued his Norton saga, I was overjoyed to discover that the witty writing had not diminished at all. Now with Norton (and Peter) heading overseas to France, the sweet Scottish Fold endears himself to all of the readers again, as Gethers makes his readers groan with comments about how nice Nice is. A definite must red! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opener for Every Food Consumer
Keith Stewart gently prods us, especially those of us who live in urban areas,to become acutely aware of every bit of food we choose to eat:how it is grown, where, by whom, at what heavy physical and financial cost to the farmer and to society. The book is an engrossing essay about the author's difficult journey from being an unfulfilled middle aged city-dweller to becoming someone in touch with the acres he feels privileged to tend. Woven into the narrative is much wisdom about the choices we as consumers and as a nation have made (hugh subsidies to agribusiness that encourage production of unhealthy food heavily reliant on petrochemical fertilizers).
5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
This simple, beautiful story describes with perfect eloquence our elemental relationship with the planet by way of the food we eat. This book changed my life. If everyone read this book, we'd live in a much better world. It's wise and delicious from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars food for thought
A truly delightful read. Written with great care and concern for the world in which we live, Mr. Stewart has given all of us, and not only New Yorkers, a real taste for a different way of life and not necessarily a simpler one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Country Life as Rehab
After the brief period of time it took to read this tale, I'm not surprised it found its way into my hands. This is not only a story I "get," (couple flees city for a life in the country) it's full of a self-deprecating and sarcastic wit I welcome when reading memoirs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good-natured humor and light social commentary
Journalist Jim Mullen presents this delightfully droll look at the culture clash that ensues when a couple of longtime Manhattanites (the author and his wife) buy a rundown farmhouse in upstate New York. The opening chapters feature plenty of laughs as Mullen very self-consciously details his disdain for the country and its manifold flaws, all in good fun, of course. Speaking as a typical New Yorker, Mullen suggests that, "Upstate is to New York City what Canada is to the United States - a great, empty space to the north that most people are quite happy to know nothing about". But after his wife gives up smoking and decides she needs something to do with her hands, Mullen dutifully accompanies her to "a town that looks as if the Unabomber were the head of the planning board" and their new dream house in the country. Its dilapidated condition comes as quite a shock to its unwilling owner: "The bathroom combined all the worst features of Appalachian and European plumbing in one convenient spot. Why they brought this toilet indoors one can only guess. Keeping up with the Clampetts, no doubt". The friendly neighbors, the silent nights, the desultory dress code, the local shopping alternatives all hit our new homeowner like the smell of the fresh cow manure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very pleasurable read!
To read this delightful little book was to be carried into his space and more fully into my own.It made me breathe slower.I know of no higher praise to give. Once, right in the middle of reading, I stopped, called a friend on the phone and asked for a moment to read a passage. She, too, was delighted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Have a need to get away?
Every time I read Klinkenborg's musings, I escape to a land not my own, coming out renewed. He has a vast command of the language, able to string common words together to make them sound brand new. I keep my copy in the loo, as the chapters are short and fully satisfying until my next visit. A worthy book to own or give as a gift to someone who appreciates quality prose that brings the reader close to the earth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Klinkenborg's words flow like a river
To my knowledge, no one describes the twelve months of the year more articulately than Klingkenborg. With a month-by-month description, he picks out all the details that he believes piece together a single day, and ultimately, a year. His words are deeply poetic; from the description of the windblown grass to the smell of the morning rain, the script strikes nostalgia into the hearts of all readers. The pure richness of Klinkenborg's book makes The Rural Life come to life with every word. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A life changing book!
This is one of those books you read and it can change your life. It's an intellectually beautiful read by a biologist who has spent her life studying the relationship of trees, forests, organisms, insects and animals and explains their connections simply. I think it's an important book such as Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". It should be in everyone's library and read over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spread the word

5-0 out of 5 stars A series of lively, scientific essays on connections between tree species and the animals and insects which use it
Biologist Joan Maloof's ventures into the forests of the Eastern United states provide a series of lively, scientific essays on connections between tree species and the animals and insects which use it in Teaching The Trees: Lessons From The Forest. In leaving lab for direct environmental observation, Maloff's firsthand observations are lively and personal as well as scientific, exploring some of her favorite trees and their importance.

I thought that I could totally relate to this book because I am also his age and I thought it was awsome to compare each other. This book always kept you on the edge of what they would do next.It was a funny book and was a book with morals. If your the type that likes funny and true stories, this is the book for you.

I recommend this book to any one who likes extreme sports. This book is a page-turner because you always wonder what dumb thing they will do next. I didn't connect to the character because I'm not crazy. I enjoyed the genre and style of this writing because it was easy to follow. Almost every chapter ended with a cliffhanger. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to many people.

5-0 out of 5 stars For country lovers everywhere
Even if you've never listened to a soulful country song, you'll enjoy this book.Filled with heartwarming stories from country stars, country music lovers and simply folks who live in the country, this book is another perfect Chicken Soup For the Soul. Each night my husband lets me read one story (such a tyrant!) and some nights I cry over the story, some nights I read it aloud to him. Each is a gift that touches the heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories and the song on the CD was super!
I loved reading all the stories.I thought that they all touched the heart. It was nice to read things from some of the more "mature" country stars. The song "In the Shade of the Family Tree" waswonderful.I think a lot of people could picture their own families.Goodwork to the authors of the book and to the songwriters of the song!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary inspirational stories! Need Kleenex :)!
What a great book! For everyone, but especially the country people. If you're a country fan you're in for a treat! It makes you remember just how blessed you after reading the experiences of these people. It's"touched by an angel" country style. Plus the CD is a real bonus! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended for all animal lovers
Through Animals' Eyes: True Stories From A Wildlife Sanctuary is an anthology about the creatures cared for by Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation (WRR). Founded by the author in 1977, WRR provides sanctuary for orphaned, injured, or displaced wildlife, rehabilitating them for eventual release - or providing them with permanent care in large natural habitats if they are deemed nonreleasable. WWR also gives permanent care to exotic wild animals that have suffered from the pet trade, roadside zoos, or research facilities. From the raccoon with burned feet who perseveres to survive, to an abandoned emu who makes friends with a one-winged vulture in a game of pick-up sticks, these tales put one in the skin, fur, or feathers of the creatures who have paid the price of man's expansion. Through Animals' Eyes is strongly recommended for all animal lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Read
This charming vignette of stories will leave you with a new and wonderful perspective of wildlife, as well as a great deal of respect for the people at Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation in Boerne, TX.This book is a must read for anyone with a love for the wildlife of these United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down
This book was given to me as a gift and I couldn't put it down. This heartwarming book takes you into the emotions and thoughts of wild animals. They come alive and you see them as the caring, loving and intelligentbeings they are. This book will make you never able to look at a wildanimal as a "dumb" animal or expendable resource again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Makes a great gift
This quick-read makes a perfect gift for the woman who really does love cats too much -- like me. It is thoughtful and it delivers a chuckle on every page, and the illustrations are cute. A lot of the points made in the book will really hit home for cat lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all Cat lovers!
This book was HILARIOUS>^..^5-0 out of 5 stars Hi. My name is Kathy, and I'm a Cat-oholic...
As I sit here in the middle of the night typing this, my cat sits on my lap as she purrs away and I hit the keyboard while my elbows are uncomfortably extended out straight...of course I won't bend them...I wouldn't want to disturb my baby. She's comfortable.Thank you Allia for letting me know that there are others out there and I am not alone. At last, group therapy may be available!!!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Packing in much more detail about nature than any biography would have achieved
Author David Gessner had always known of John Hay, who was his hero; but he only befriended the older naturalist when he returned to his childhood home on Cape Cod. His thought of writing a biography of the naturalist changed when their conversations became a record of Hay's naturalist knowledge, and thus THE PROPHET OF DRY HILL: LESSONS FROM A LIFE IN NATURE isn't just a survey of Hay's life and personality but a treasured collection of his seasoned observations on nature itself, packing in much more detail about nature than any biography would have achieved. Highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pedestal People
I have always imagined a dinner party with only the list of "pedestal people" in my life attending.David Gessner would be on that list. While reading this amazing book, I felt like I had walked silently behind David and John Hay on the Cape that is also so close to my heart. What an amazing gift of writing from Gessner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Powerful, and Wise
I've read almost everything David Gessner has written, and this slim book towers above his already impressive body of work.Gessner's portrait of naturalist John Hay is frank and warm, and depicts Hay as a philosopher from whom we all could learn some profound lessons.Hay's commitment to the natural world, and his insistence that we look to nature for the questions and answers in our lives, rather than probing the inner recesses of our psyches, stands as a much-needed corrective to the easy psychologizing of daytime television and self-help books.Hay finds meaning in our lives in the passing of the seasons, and this book can help us find meaning there too.Gessner mirrors Hay's outlook by searching for meaning through his depiction of Hay, and by letting Hay speak for himself throughout the book, rather than philosophizing about Hay or dissecting his published work. This book is really a brilliant achievement of nonfiction writing in any genre, though of course it will have special appeal to anyone interested in the natural world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Old Florida" with a side of humor
I loved Al Burt's newspaper columns because he wrote about a Florida that only someone who got there before 1975 would even recognize. They are even more fun to read now.Makes me want to hop in the car and drive to Micanopy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Read
Al Burt is a Florida institution. For many years I bought the Miami Herald on Sunday just so I could read his column. Now, many of my favorite columns are available in something more permanent than the back page of amagazine, and honed and polished and brought up to date to boot. When I'mnot thumbing through it, this book rests right next to my copies ofMarjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Marjory Stoneman Douglas--Al Burt's kindredsouls among those who love Florida and explain it to others in ways thatthe Chamber of Commerce never will master.More, more. Please! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone
I did not read this book: I devoured it in two days. And it's not a thin little leaflet by any means. This is a book that can be enjoyed by many audiences: those interested in the Amish culture (like myself,) health care professionals, and anyone who needs reminding that there are some outstanding people in this world.

4-0 out of 5 stars A look into the past
As an RN, I really enjoyed learning about how Dr. Lechman worked among the Amish, adapting his medical practice to fit the beliefs of the Amish and the sometimes limited supplies available to him. If you do not have a medical background you will still enjoy the book; the medical jargon is easy to understand and many times explained.
