4-0 out of 5 stars Would be five stars if it came with the first bit blun off
A welcome compilation of the incomparable Myles marred only by a thoroughly cack-handed introduction by Jamie O'Neill, whose sole qualification for the job it seems is having written something called At Swim, Two Boys--a novel apparently, set against the backdrop of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, about the love that blossoms between two boys. Shudder. Seriously though, I haven't read this much cartoon Irish claptrap in prefatory remarks since I ran across Malachy McCourt's acknowledgements in his ghastly little memoir, A Monk Swimming. If O'Neill's smugly contemptuous and entirely unwarranted swipe at the Catholic Church doesn't give you the full measure of this imposter's stunted perspective, then his trite and tired rehearsal of the Irish way with the English language certainly will. My advice is skip the introduction, better yet yank it completely, and start straight in on Flann, a joy as ever from start to finish. Saw Eamon Morrissey do his thing too so I did, back in the eighties, and he done full justice to your man up above in the bed I can tell you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Authentic View of 60s Culture
I actually saw the author at a meeting of the Ann Arbor School Board in the late 60's. He was a frightening figure with his wild hair, dark skin and pose of hard-core rebel activist. Ironically, he admits in the book that he was trying to play such a role and regrets his naivete. Throughout the book he is candid of his own lapses of judgment and lack of maturity. Ironically his biggest problem was not with the 60s drugs of marijuana and hallucinogens, but with alcohol. His glimpse into the hippie culture of drugs and rebellion is unparalled because he was and is probably the one person whose life epitomizes it. Yet he clearly understands, better than any writer or columnist what the 60's were all about and equally clear what we are all up against if we want to change society. It is not only the President and all the reactionary Republicans. It is our own families, neighborhoods, businesses...the entire society that supports the current way of life. While the book is entertaining, enlightening, and shocking throughout, the most dramatic section is the story of his trial before the Supreme Court. It is damning in its portrayal of William Rehnquist as a member of the Justice Department. It tells how some of the members of the Court turned their backs on the government lawyers as they presented their case. The judgment was 9-0 for Plamondon, but more intriguing is that the decision was announced the day before the Watergate break-in. This is one of the best, most honest and forthright autobiographies I have read. The only thing I can say against the book is that I never liked the MC-5.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read

5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterical book

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a collection of essays
The first reviewer fails to note the basic fact that this is a collection of essays by different writers, some of them witty and graceful, others less so. The sentence he or she quotes is from the most rebarbative essay, and readers who are put off by this sample of the prose should read theessays by Derek Attridge, Debra Fried and Fred Ahl, for example.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Beef?
"Is it the meat or is it the motion?" Jonathan Culler asksirreverently in this ambitious book on puns and the origins of"written" literature. In other words, which is the morepersuasive of the two dominant competing theories of literature'sorigins--the essentialist or the pragmatic.Try as he might to beevenhanded in his presentation of both theories,he doesn't leave you indoubt as to his preference for the latter.Though he commits himself inthe introduction to writing his book more for the generalreader than forthe specialist, he compromises his intent by frequently resorting toturgid, opaque prose; for example: "By their coaxial ambivalence, theanal and the nasal "markers" crystallize the discomfiture thatmust have been felt by the first hominid rising out ofthe miasmal mistsof consciousness."If this weren't enough of a distraction for thereader, his theory that the transition from oral to written literaturefirst manifested itself in, of all places, prehistoric Finland should makeone's head spin. All in all, this a book that only a graduate student willtake unqualified pleasure in reading. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars More Then Just Friends?

2-0 out of 5 stars Bizarre and plotless, if creative
This is a novel unlike any I have ever seen, but having said that (and yes, it's creative and I am sure the author is smart and witty and interesting), it is also almost inscrutable.Only a teenager who cares about very minor soap-opera, self-absorbed sorts of little things will be able to tolerate this book. It's all little notes written on greasy paper bags and stuff like that. I think teens will enjoy the fact that it's about COLLEGE kids, but what an annoying group of people-who-think-they're-so cool. It's hard to take.I can't tell you how hard to read it is...

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK EVER
I CAN'T TELL YOU! I think this book was the best book ever. This book writen by Hillary Franks is about teenagers. This is mostly about Jake, Xandra and Jake's best friend Sean.Jake is a big talker so then he deisides to write letersto his friens and to Xandra.Jake is trying to win Xandras love by sending leteres and useing up-side down calculaters.Jake uses anytype of paper or anything he finds just to write to his friens,he uses note books, composite notebook, board on Jakes door and on Xandras, paper note with orange cover , and many other things. This is probably the best book you will ever read I totaly recomend it if you are a person who like to right notes.Tise all takes place in there college in a very cold seasone (winter).Jake gets in a fight with Sean and that is because Jake and his big mouth kills it then latter Jake tells Sean all this stuff then the y latter are friends agin. ...
