5-0 out of 5 stars nice learning deep understanding
The book has many good ideas in order to ilustrate every chemical concept and make the learning easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the Cartoon Guide to Chem
This is an excellent illustration of the major principles of chemistry. Great for general chemistry students searching for an alternative way to learn the basic concepts.
2-0 out of 5 stars Comes Up Short
As a high school student, I made the very bad decision to skip 11th and 12th grade science - both of which were electives.Although I was just a kid, the school board and my parents (who I love) should have known better. So, rather than continuing to complain about my inadequate science education, I decided to try to fill the gap in my spare time.As part of this effort, I purchased this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comical
I purchased this book to give to a friend who was retiring at 70. I am glad that I "went through" it before wrapping it. It is a comical book, but does not work for a lady who is not married, has never been married, and has no grandchildren, otherwise a cute gift. Now, I have it in my "gift giving" pile and will wait to find the right person to give it to.In the meantime, I need to find another "funny"for the retiring lady.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Been A Pleasure Growing Old With Judith Viorst
My wife and I have enjoyed her books since It's Hard to be Hip Over 30. Time has flown by. Her poems are funny and poignant. She tells it like it is. I hope she and we will be around for the 80's and 90's.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The woman in the mirror is not the real me."
Can Judith Viorst actually be in her seventies?Where have the years gone?I Googled her and, sure enough, Viorst was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1931.Therefore, she is eminently qualified to write this lively book of poetry called, "I'm Too Young to Be Seventy and Other Delusions."

4-0 out of 5 stars Deliciously twisted
One can imagine Edward Gorey mulling over these "Cautionary Tales",subsequently creating succinct Goreyesque illustrations for them. Then years later after presenting his family to us in "The Willowdale Handcar" he undoubtedbly mulled over ideas about families & children and came up with my personal favorite Gorey: The Gashleycrumb Tinies. If you like Gorey & you like the Tinies, you'll enjoy "Cautionary Tales".

4-0 out of 5 stars Remembering old roads
A short and decently written account of the Burma Shave phenomenon that had me, as a child from the 1940's, searching along the northwestern two-lane road sides for those pithy and succinct phrases which always ended in "Burma Shave".They never failed to delight and I carried several sayings with me well into adulthood. This book brings back the delight and gives a nicely written history of what it was all about.

This was purchased as a gift for my Dad and he loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating story of one of advertising's greatest triumphs
With the low-brow humor of "whazzzzzup" and high-speed editing of MTV-style ads dominating the landscape, it's almost hard to imagine howmemorable the quaint multi-sign Burma-Shave ads were. The combination ofclever verse and brilliant exposition -- stretching along the wide-openroad until the punch line could be delivered -- is unlike any other addelivery in history.Read more

Editorial Review

Of all the literary genres, humor has the shortest shelf life--except for Archy and Mehitabel, that is. First published in 1916, it is a classic of American literature. Archy is a cockroach, inside whom resides the soul of a free-verse poet; he communicates with Don Marquis by leaping upon the keys of the columnist's typewriter. In poems of varying length, Archy pithily describes his wee world, the main fixture of which is Mehitabel, a devil-may-care alley cat. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Unique Humor Of Don Marquis
Anyone who hasn't read Don Marquis' stories of the adventures of Archie and Mehitabel, have missed what is doubtless one of the world's greatest pieces of humorous literature. These stories delve into history to pull out hysterically humorous aspects of incidents regarding such characters as Cleopatra, and apply them to the lowly day-to-day events in the lives of a cockroach who operates a typewriter, a cat that complains she cannot understand why she is blessed with so many of thosedamned kittens, and a dead rat that receives glorious last rites by being filed in an alley ash can. No words can do justice to Don Marquis' fantastic imagination and his equally fantastic sense of humor. Anyone who misses this work is to be pitied! A. D. Holcombe

2-0 out of 5 stars You call this twisted?
When I got this book in the mail, I glanced at it for 2 minutes and decided to send it back. From the description, I was expecting a picture book, or a collection of stories along the lines of Jhonen Vasquez or Roman Dirge books and comics. You know-with artwork and actual stories. Instead, these "tales" are just lame, short descriptions of a strange person or situation. A grade schooler could come up with more imaginative stuff than this, much less the simple black/white pencil drawings. Forget Tim Burton, Walt Disney would think this was lame.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crude
I thought this book was very crude. It is definitely not suited for young children, as many of those who gave it high ratings agreed.I thought it would be along the lines of Lemony Snicket, but it was not; in fact, I didn't think it was funny at all.Whereas some people may enjoy it, I would direct those ESPECIALLY for young children to look elsewhere. This book was not my cup of tea. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We Love Bold Lady!
My 3-year old daughter loves "Bold Lady," maybe even as much as I do! The vibrant colors of Harper's art with the creative, rhyming text - and a home-run ending make this book awesome. Harper updates a old classic, and like a classic, it holds a firm place in our ever-changing bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy One for You and Another for Your Best Friend's Toddler
I gave this book to a friend for her 2 year old's birthday, but didn't expect the rave reviews it got--the emails started pouring in--"thanks--my daughter loves it!"then..."she wants to read it 6 times per day!!"So I bought a copy. Then my son, now 18 months, became an addict--"star!" "moon"!"balloon!" (please note he didn't know these words two days ago)He goes for the book several times a day.But now I'm addicted too--the illustrations are magnificent, with wonderful color, detail, and depth that captivates even very young children, not unlike Richard Scarry. The text is charming, rythmic, and inspirational (which my son will hopefully appreciate later.)We own a lot of books, but very few get thrown in my lap as often as this; I'm ordering all her books, hoping they are as much fun as this!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Cat Poetry
Readers of Poetry for Cats: The Definitive Anthology of Distinguished Feline Verse by Henry Beard will notice how much influence humans have on cats. Cats will not enjoy having this pointed out. They work hard to protect their free will and try to dictate the terms of their relationships with humans. You can not just pick up a cat and expect it to be happy being held; you have to wait until the cat is ready. Cats will not play with toys just because you want to play. Cats appear to think independently, but their poetry betrays them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love Cats and Poetry
The only thing wrong with this book is that one has to both love cats and be educated in poetry.(In other words, there's no one else I know who can appreciate this book!)I like some of Henry Beard's poems even better than I do the originals.I'm especially glad that he chose to interpret some of my favorite poems (e.g., "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," and "Xanadu.")Henry Beard is extremely talented; this sort of thing is very hard to do.(I know; I've tried.)This is a MUST for anyone and everyone who loves cats and poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant!
Henry Beard has both a good knowledge of the original poems and of cats. His spoofs are tremendously clever, and he chooses the most common poems in English literature, so most people will recognize them. I laughed myself nearly sick. It's as good as jogging! ;-) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Mind
If truth is beauty, and beauty truth, this is one good looking book. As an aspiring cynic, finding this book was akin to Ahab finding the whale. (I have no idea what that means). I don't think this book could be written today. Most of Bierce's definitions have become accepted fact. The book belongs in the library of everyone who believes Political Correctness is the beginning of the end of the world. Without the ability to communicate honestly, we are doomed. If you don't agree, you're just a bigoted fool. (see Bierce definitions). A great, funny, lucid book.

This was my favorite book as a kid & still is.I now have ownership of our family's 'ancient' copy (copyright date 1955, Mom's written inscription: Christmas 1962 for my oldest brother who was age 6).I recently read it to my 6 year old son and he also was taken with this book. I am getting a new copy for him for Christmas as the original is pretty fragile now. This book belongs in every family's collection along with The Lorax, The Sneeches, Bartholomew Cubbins, Horton and the rest of the classic/original Seuss stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars The joys and tribulations of aging set to rhyme
Judith Viorst has become the poet of aging with books of poetry dedicated to her lyrical and funny perceptions of each decade of life from the 20s to the 60s. With Forever Fifty And Other Negotiations she explores with insight and humor the joys and fears of being in your fifties. The book contains 24 one-page poems that are accompanied by full page graphic illustrations in green ink on a rich cream paper. The 24 graphics are reproduced on the end papers. The attention to design makes this a wonderful gift for a quinquagenarian friend.5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle Poetic Humor of Nostalgia and Reassurance
This is the fourth of Judith Viorst's books of poetry about crossing decades in one's life.Perhaps this one will become one of her most popular in the next 10 years as record numbers of baby boomers turn 50every day.Although both women and men will find plenty that speaks tothem, the book is very much in a woman's voice and will resonate morepowerfully with many female readers.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just Okay
It wasn't what I expected. It is kind of amusing however if actually sing the tune with the misheard lyric they provide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to read together
My best friend and I picked up a copy of this book at a used book store on a lark, and afterwards, we stopped for ice cream. We brought the book in with us, and began to read.It was hysterical! It was a lot of fun to read the misheard lyrics together, and we were laughing so hard we had the attention of everyone else at the ice cream parlor. My best friend picked a guy up because of this book.Fun stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lyrics, Please!
I have read and sung so many lyrics in my career - and heard so many funny mis-interpretations of lyrics. My own kids "murdered" some lyrics when they were small. This book is a kick!Just sit back and relax and enjoy some chuckles at the end of the day!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks, I Needed That!
This book massages every Christmas-induced ache. It's great to read sassy, spot-on lyrics that actually fit the music. I agree it's not for everyone, but this book is very funny!

3-0 out of 5 stars REALLY FUNNY, BUT NOT FOR KIDS
The songs in this book are really funny, and I'm sure that many people will find it to be a welcome ice-breaker during family gatherings. However, due to some profanity and other issues expressed in the lyrics, it's not suitable for kids.In fact, I'm not sure I would share it with the adults in my family at Christmas. While my family loves this kind of humor, it's disappointing to see the use of profanity (and God's name being used in vain) in a book connected to Christmas.A gifted author can always find choice, unique words to achieve their goals; they don't have to resort to profanity to make a statement or get a laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Like My Family Christmases...Only Funny!
I thought this was such a great idea for a book, but I wasn't sure how it would sound to actually sing the songs. If you can get through them without laughing, you're doing better than Idid! Really, Really fun for the whole...Okay, for MOST of the family!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
This little book is quite a find. While I'm not jewish, I was raised by a Catholic mother, so I think I can relate. These short poems will definitely bring a smile to your face.

4-0 out of 5 stars You Think For No Reason I Read These? No! I Read TheseTo Grow Wiser, Seventeen-Syllables-At-A-Time.
In some ways even funnier than Bader's other mixture of Judaism and (flimsy) Zen wisdom. These haiku do often offer nuggets of wisdom and nearly always they do it with a little joke wrapped up inside. You can read this book in about thirty minutes, contemplation time included, so why you still sitting there?

5-0 out of 5 stars HAIKU FOR JEWS & BABY HAIKU
I have been a student for Haiku for a long time and now am teaching at workshops about the Haiku form, but most importantly, the Haiku spirit. I came from Japan and I am very flattered to notice how popular Haiku is in the Western contemporary literary circle. While Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that states in 3 lines of 5-7-5 syllables a spiritaul insight, I tend not to bother with the syllables (because Japanese syllables and English syllables are totally different) but focus on whether the poet has captured the Haiku spirit- which means Zen. As far as I am concerned, David M. Bader's Haiku for Jews has got it! You can tell within 2 poems. And the rest is just a truly enjoyable read. The other great poetess that I think also got the essence of the Haiku spirit is Lily Wang. Her newest work, BABY HAIKU, contains many moving Haiku. Though the subjects are totally different, their powerful applications of the Haiku form are impressive. I am using them both for my Haiku classes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This one will be a classic in your child's library.
This book is one of my sons favorites. (17 months)The illustrations are great and the authors make a cute little day-long adventure for the eensy weensy spider. The book is actually pretty long so it works well for a bedtime story.I would also suggest "The Lady with the Alligator Purse" and "Miss Mary Mack" by the same two authors. All three of these books are illustrated from a unique point of view that I think children like because they get to see things from a semi-birds view rather than their usual worms eye view.

5-0 out of 5 stars My baby never gets tired of this book
We bought this book for my daughter when she was about 8 months old.She loved to hear the song right away and would sometimes want me to sing it 3 times in a row. Now that she is almost 11 months, she will grab this specific book off of her shelf and flip through it by herself and point to the pictures. This will be a favorite book for years to come.I can't wait until she can sing this song by herself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sing the Story!
If you know the words to eensy weensy spider (or itsy bitsy Spider depending where you were raised)- you can sing this whole book. My two year loves it! Doesn't matter if Dad, Mom, or one his 5 big brothers sings it to him- he just wants to listen to you sing it! He is starting to hum along. I can hardly wait till he is old enough to sing along too! Great books like this one allow a child to interact along with the story. The writing to cute and fun. The pictures adorable. Enjoy! ... Read more
