4-0 out of 5 stars A great tale of an island adventure, not much detail about shark science
Susan Casey, a journalist, becomes intrigued by white sharks and the Farallon Islands some thirty miles from San Francisco. After fighting through restrictions and barriers, she manages to get onto the island and observe a group of scientists studying predation by great white sharks within the so-called red triangle. Her description of the islands flora and fauna are very good. Detailed descriptions of shark attacks also give the story some excitement. She doesn't provide much scientific detail about the research she observed; however, she's a journalist, not a biologist. She's a story-teller and does a good job.
2-0 out of 5 stars Other reviewers must be relatives
My thought after reading this book was " I wish I could get my money back." I didn't like it at all. It had less to do with sharks and more to do with Susan's plights on the island itself.
2-0 out of 5 stars I came away disappointed in the end...
Susan Casey's book is a fascinating peek into her obsession with white sharks. Her fascination and admiration of the creatures comes through, as does the passion behind her personal quest to spend time on the Farallones. However, by the end of the book, I was angry with Casey. Her blind passion put the entire Sharkwatch operation in jeopardy and resulted in the firing of one valuable researcher. I think that she succeeds in translating the majesty and awe of the white shark, but I think that the story comes off as a selfish city reporter who is no better than the tourists (whom she criticizes) who pay to cage dive with the sharks. She may mean to do well, but leaves the project in jeopardy as a direct result of her irresponsible actions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading When You Have Nothing Else To Do
Provides interesting information on a number of topics that you never realized you needed to know - like "Why do horses in an open field always seem to stand head to tail?"Then there's "Why do roaches always die on their backs?"And "Why do women in the U.S. shave their armpits?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Answering life's deeper questions...
The Imponderables book series by David Feldman is the pinnacle of interesting and useful bathroom reading! Since the beginning of the series, Feldman has been highlighting questions that we didn't even know we had (like exactly why is it that a mile is 5,280 feet? and where is Donald Duck's brother?) then he finds "the experts" on any given subject to answer the question. At the end of each question and answer, you are left with a little better insight into the world around you (and you can go out and impress your friends with an expanded catalog of obscure anecdotes). 3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining book filled with useless trivia
"When do Fish Sleep" is a book of "Imponderables" (a term invented by the author meaning a question that cannot be answered by conventional means of reference books, calculations, or tangible means such as measuring). An example of an imponderable is "Why don't birds tip over when they sleep on a telephone wire?" or the like the title, "When do fish sleep?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
I received this book within 4 days and I live in the midwest. My father loves it.He is 81 and loves to fish.It arrived in excellent condition.THANKSAmazon

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful collection of stories!
I'm a woman who enjoys fishing and hadn't seen many books that covered my favorite topic from both sides of the gender line. I loved this book! Many of the stories could have been pulled from my own experiences they seemed so familiar. I highly recommend this book for a summer read. I love the fact that I can pick it up, read a story and put it down to do some chores, then pick it up again later without missing a beat. My favorite stories are the Bologna Wars by Tanith Tyler, and Tadpoles Triumph by Banjo Bandolas. I've passed the book on to my children now and they seem to enjoy it as much as I have.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too sentimental for me
The Chicken Soup stories follow a formula, and are too sentimental for me. Some people like them though, and that's okay. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating survey
BRIMFIELD RUSH; THE THRILL OF COLLECTING AND THE HUNT FOR THE BIG SCORE is a lively survey of a massive outdoor antiques and collectibles show spanning over 20 fields along a one-mile stretch in Massachusetts. It attracts thousands of dealers and collectors yearly - but BRIMFIELD RUSH follows not only the event's history but the experiences of a couple's year at Brimfield markets. The morning's opening 'rush' serves as a fascinating survey of Brimfield's treasures and attractions throughout a spicy, dramatic account collectors will relish and recognize.
5-0 out of 5 stars The antiques business from the other side of the table
If you don't live in New England or make a practice of frequenting flea markets, you might not be familiar with the name "Brimfield."It's not just a small town in south central Massachusetts; it's become an all-encompassing term (in both noun and verb forms) for the event that overtakes that region three weeks of the year.Author Bob Wyss has provided us with a look at Brimfield's history as well as the work that goes on behind the scenes. It's a view we casual visitors don't usually get or could even guess at.The emphasis here is on the dealers and the residents, and not the average walk-in buyer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brimfield Flea Market
Bob Wyss has given us an exciting, insider's look, at the biggest flea market in the world. As someone who purchased his first antiques, 33 years ago at the Rose Bowl Swap Meet, this book has rekindled my interest in the antique trade."Brimfield Rush" is extremely well researched and gives you the background you need to venture out there and make your first deal. The reader is taken for a roller coaster ride of highs and lows as Joe and Rachel navigate through the worlds of flea markets, art galleries, estate sales, and eBay. For anyone interested in the "Hunt for the Big Score," this book is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Pass out laughing' funny
I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.
5-0 out of 5 stars so good you can't describe it
i first theses books when i was ten years old and i haven't stopped yet.. we only have four books but i intend to get more of the books.. they are funny.. i like the one where he goes hunting on his bicycle and gets the deer stuck on the pedals.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Comparisons This Time
This is the second collection of stories by Patrick F. McManus that I have read, and while he is compared to many notable names on the jacket, and I compared him to other humorists I like the first time I read his work, he deserves to stand on his own. It is not an issue of his being as good, nearly as good, or better than another humorist. He is unique and very special, Mr. McManus is an original.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He' s so funny
Three compilations in between two covers, stories to read over and over, big print, hard cover.Just a wonderful, hilarious book to treasure.Just as funny the second, third, forth... time. What a talented guy!

4-0 out of 5 stars The ?Real? outdoors
This compilation of three of McManus's books (Collected mainly from Field and Stream) is definitely a keeper. For anyone who loves the outdoors and even for those whose idea of roughing it is no room service (My category) this book collects tales of the wild as seen through McManus's warmly humorous style. Tales of his wayward youth, spent hunting and hanging out with the local mountain man Ne'er-do-well, camping disasters, and the long suffering women in his life, (Mother, grandmother, sister, wife) are all subjects that McManus's views with a wink and a smile. Read this one in small doses when you need a laugh, and while I am amazed that despite all this aggravation McManus and other outdoors people think these pursuits constitute a good time; at least McManus has turned these misadventures into a lot of laughs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ripping good stuff! Tales of pirates, desert sorceresses, lusty women and dangerous men
The mysterious desert. The high plains. The stormy seas. The dense jungles. These are the places where actions speak louder than words, where the sharp retort of a six-gun decides who is right and who is dead, and a blind tiger stalks with preternatural senses and determination. These are the settings for Adventure Tales, a genre of literature prominent in the 1900's, in which many of the finest authors of the period plied their trades. 5-0 out of 5 stars As exciting, wild, and spooky to read as its predecessors
The twelfth volume in the "Adventure Classics" series of graphic novels and short story collections, the reader is treated to some of the finest adventure writing by some of the most talented authors, and adapted to the graphic novel format by illustrators and artists of matching caliber. The stories comprising this issue include: "In the Valley of the Sorceress" by Sax Rohmer, ill. by J. B. Bonivert; "The Masked Ball" by Alexandre Dumas, ill. by Michael Manning; "Two Men Named Collins" by Damon Runyon, ill. by Noel Tuazon; "Tigre" by Zane Grey, ill. by Don Marquez; "Blood Money" by Rafael Sabatini, ill. by Kevin Atkinson; "The Stolen Story" by Johnston McCulley, ill. by Chris Pelletiere; "Gunga Din", by Rudyard Kipling, ill. by Mary Fleener, and more. Thrilling tales of the past century brought to life in a wide variety of bold, black-and-white styles make Adventure Classics Volume 12 as exciting, wild, and spooky to read as its predecessors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Professional
After reading Mr. Grosz' first book, Wildlife Wars, I couldn't wait to get his next one.For Love of Wildness exceeded my expectations and now I am looking forward to reading his new book.5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone with interest in wildlife and conservation issues
Terry Grosz was a conservation officer for the California and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for more than thirty years. His first memoir, Wildlife Wars, covered his early life. For Love Of Wilderness: The Journal Of A U.S. Game Management Agent begins with his move from the state to the federal levels, where his cases were bigger and more complex. Grosz's stories are as infused with his love of wildlife and enjoyment of the great outdoors as they are action- packed and totally engaging. In these memoirs Grosz makes a repeated point that our failure to protect our fragile natural resources is the same as stealing from our children, and our children's children. For Love Of Wilderness is a superbly presented, candid and engaging autobiography that will also have immense appeal to anyone with an interest in wildlife and conservation issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, entertaining, informative...
After reading Wildlife Wars, I wondered if Terry Grosz could keep up the pace with a new set of memories and fascinating law enforcement experiences. Not to worry. For Love of Wildness takes you into a world almost never visited by even those of us who love the outdoors. Seldom does one who possesses a depth of knowledge in one field of endeavor, rise to be able to chronicle that knowledge and experience in an entertaining and compelling manner. Grosz has risen above all but a very few professional authors. Don't miss this one! Larry Jay Martin, author The Last Stand ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable reading!
Having known something of Bob Rich from my wife's meeting him at work numerous times I was compelled to read his book when it came to my attention. I was captured by the book in the first few pages. It was the old "couldn't put it down" story. It was the first book I have read cover to cover in 30 years. Upon finishing the book you realize it's every bit as much about fishing people as it is about catching fish. I certainly hope Bob Rich writes another book, as his easy going story telling style just makes you want to run down to the Keys and go fishing!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Fish than Fist
This is the first book about fishing that I have ever read cover to cover. It exudes great humanity and a fabulous insight into the great salt water fishing subculture of the Florida Keys. The author is a natural writer. I highly recommend Fish Fights as a great reading adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Book
I run a small deli here on the East Side in Manhattan New York. I haven't been to the ocean in 35 years let alone go fishing. I was intrested by the cover of this book and was even more intrigued when I read the back cover. It was a wonderful book I enjoyed Bubba's honesty and story telling. It read like a song. ... At times poetic, at times informative, and at times just entertaining, this book is a must for anyone who likes fish, fishing or just great art. The two guys who collaborated on this book found a fun way of sharing their fish passion with the reader. I found that this book would have been helpful for pond plants or if I needed a recipe to cook something I had raised in a pond, but I wanted information on keeping fish in a pond.Specifically I was interested in catfish, and silly me, I 'judged the book by its cover.'This book provides very little helpful infomation on raising pond fish as a hobby. If you're interested in spending several thousand dollars to commercially raise fish such as trout, then this book has something to offer.Otherwise don't bother.

5-0 out of 5 stars A poetic account of country living.
This is a beautifully written book!It contains many whimsical anecdotes on the process of building a pond, also much practical information on plants, fish, frogs, turtles, and ducks.Having just built a pond, I found this book just the ticket. It doesn't have much about the actual digging and construction--that information is best obtained from your local Soil and Water Conservation Office. But I highly recommend this book if you're building a "real" pond (not one of those plastic pool things).
