5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Cute Book for All Chocoholics!
I am a big fan of Sandra Boynton and have read many of her books despite the fact I'm an adult. Her writing and drawings are fun, whimsical and witty and her books are great for all ages.
5-0 out of 5 stars For chocolate lovers of all ages
This is a lovely book! Beautiful and funny illustrations, delicious recipes, interesting facts ... "Chocolate The Consuming Passion" covers basically everything any chocolate lover would want to know. It includes chocolate profiles, information about different kinds of chocolate, chocolate myths and funny observations. One example is this: "The greatest tragedies were written by the Greeks and by Shakespeare. Neither knew chocolate." Of course, there is no causality, but still! 5-0 out of 5 stars Still a treat twenty years after it was published!
I have always had a soft spot for anything Sandra Boynton does, but "Chocolate: The Consuming Passion" is probably my favorite of her books.I have bought it for more chocolate-loving friends than I can count and they have all been thrilled with it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Library Lady loves Dirty Sugar Cookies
I read it slowly as to savor it! I especially liked reading about the quest for Gran-Gran's recipe box!!!!! I enjoyed Ayun's sugar cookies, dirt and all, every evening for over a month. I read a tasty morsel each night (to help me unwind after a crazy day of summer library program) as long as I could keep my eyes open. Sometimes I stayed awake long enough to mark the page with my new magnetic monkey bookmark recently acquired from a friend who is scared of monkeys. Sometimes I was just conscious enough to dog ear my page before nodding off so I could find my spot the next night. (Don't tell anyone a librarian would do that to a book, but hey it's my book, not the library's copy!) Sometimes I passed out before marking my spot only to roll over and squash my glasses and kick the book onto the floor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stand By Your Ayun
When I heard that Ayun Halliday was writing a book on food, I wondered why. While she seems to have a bit of cooking awareness, I didn't picture her as an authority. And what new could she bring to the over-populated world of food books? I feared she had erred in her choice of topics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh-out-loud food frivolity
As a professional cook and boringly-avid reader of coobooks and food memoirs, this one--dare I say it--hit the spot.Halliday's self-deprecating honesty, sense of crazy fun and scary talent of total recall about growing up in the seventies and all the cream-of soup casseroles that entailed made it a read-in-one-sitting book. All that with some saliva-inducing recipes. So fun! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Amazing, Aaron does it again
I purchased Mr. Morgan's last book (about Gingerbread Houses) and loved it, I couldn't wait to get my hands on his latest creation. As usual his creativity and talent shines through.I enjoy giving these types of books as gifts because my friends and I are not pastry chefs, we are merely mothers who want to make things that taste great, look great, and that can be recreated without the official title of 'pastry chef' after our names.Mr. Morgan's book does all of this. The colors, the pictures, the recipes, a treasure from cover to cover.Hope my friends don't read this, or they'll know what they're getting for Christmas! I HIGHLY recommend this book!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was very much looking forward to receiving this book, but was generally disappointed with it.I agree with the reviewer who said the cover was the best part. Many of the cookie decorations were mundane and rather unprofessional looking. This book didn't offer anything innovative or new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional "How-Tos" for Easy, Elegant Cookies
This delightful book shows, step-by-step, how to create elegant confections from basic cookie dough. "The Artful Cookie" explains in simple detail, how to prepare four basic dough recipes and four recipes for glaze, ganache and icings. In clear language, Pastry Chef, Aaron Morgan, outlines easy professional techniques, using ordinary ingredients and kitchen utensils to create delectable cookies you'd be proud to serve anywhere for any occasion. 2-0 out of 5 stars Hotel Bemelmans, published by Overlook Press is abridged
Potential purchasers of Bemelman's lovely "Hotel Bemelmans" should know that as far as I can tell all the Hotel Bemelmans books advertised on Amazon is a shortened edition of the original Hotel Bemelmans published in 1946 by Viking Press. The books advertised here were published in 2000 by Overlook Press and contain 24 stories. The Viking Press edition has 36 stories. I learned this the hard way having purchased 3 copies of the shortened Overlook Press book. Some wonderful stories have been left out. e.g. Art at the Splendide. I have the original and am looking to buy some more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant and Moving - - oh yes, and funny too
This was one of the most moving pieces of literature I'veread in the last 10 years. The scenes on returning to post-WWI Germany poverty arestill sharp in my mind, as is the ending scene in the book, which is a scathing commentary on 1920s high society but which is absolutely appropriate to today's (or any day's) bored, frivolous jet set. After reading this short book I eagerly sought out another adult work by Bemelmans (can't find the title right now) and was disappointed to find it superficial in comparison. This is a jewel of a book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poignant Tales of Grand Hotel Life - Moderately Entertaining
"In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines..." Years and years after first hearing these lines from the first Bemelmans' Madeline book, and still knowing most of the lines in the book by heart, I was thrilled to find "Hotel Bemelmans" in the bookstore. Here, I thought, was the inimitable Bemelmans, but this time for adults. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed. After coming to America from a boyhood spent in Germany under the tutelage of Uncle Hans in the art of hotel/restaurant management, Bemelmans finds himself working at the Hotel Splendide in New York one of the City's "grand hotels". He begins at the bottom and works himself up. The stories in this book are tales of the eccentric and lovable characters that he encounters while working at the Splendide. There is the irascible Herr Brauhaus, who constantly curses " Cheeses Greisd!" in a heavy German accent, and is in charge of running the hotel. There is also Monsieur Victor who runs the hotel restaurants and strikes fear into the hearts of his staff. In addition we find Professor Gorylescu, a magician who regularly entertains at hotel parties, as well as an assortment of guests whose eccentricities are revealed with delight. It is all a portrait of a time of elegance long gone, and of those who made a certain lifestyle possible. The stories are generally poignant, but if you are looking for a book to provide you with loud guffaws unfortunately this is not it. ... Read more

This is one of the funniest books!Make sure you're sitting down, or better yet, lying down whe you read this book. You would also be well-advised to take this book in small doses, if you don't want to die laughing....:-)Grammar has never been so funny. Then again, I'm not sure if I ought to laugh or cry at how the English language is murdered :-)The drawings in the book are also hilarious.4-0 out of 5 stars One of the few sure-fire laughs in print.
"The World According to Student Bloopers," a section of Lederer's book, has been widely pirated on the Internet and is thus familiar to many, even though they may not know its original source. There's a reason why this text has echoed around the world: One cannot readit without laughing.Other sections of the book, all of which deal withthe many misuses, distortions and double-entendres encountered in everydayEnglish usage, aren't quite so laugh-packed, but are still well worth thetrip. ... I give this book 5 stars because I have not read it, so must presume it is excellent; its L.A. Times review upon launch caught my eye. The reason for this review then is to mention
4-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive guide
Scotch Whisky by Charles MacLean is a comprehensive guide about the different single malt and blended Scotch whiskies available. It starts with a short history about Scotch whisky and goes on to the making, the regional differences and how to appreciate this very traditional Scottish drink. This is followed by a listing of all the different single malt whiskies and blended whiskies. Each of them is listed by category, distiller and owner. There is also a description of the history of the whisky as well as tasting notes. This guide to whisky is excellent reading for those interested in whisky from the connoisseur to the enthusiastic amateur. And, of course, this book is always a superb gift which is usually very much appreciated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Esthery, with Hints of Batter,Peat, and Heather!
An excellent little guide to the making and tasting of Scotch whisky, both single malt (81 pages) and blended (94 pages). After the introductory chapters on the history, making, and appreciation of whisky, brief (2-5 paragraphs) descriptions of each whisky are listed. There is an emphasis on the history of the distillery; this makes it an ideal travel book. The book is part of the "Mitchell-Beazley Pocket Guides," so can be kept easily in a purse or coat pocket (and, yes, the print is legible but quite small).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Read...again...and again...and again...
It has quickly become one of my favorite books. I happen to be a tea fanatic, so obviously a book about tea and biscuits would suit me just fine. However, I am also quite particular about the books I adore, and this one fits the bill. Well written by an obviously intelligent human being, but also extremely witty and informative. I have purchased a copy for my adult brit-loving/tea-loving daughter. She wanted to borrow my copy, but there is no way I am letting it go! Buy it...devour it...come back for more. You won't be sorry.

There's nothing contained in this book that couldn't be found with a web search using google. Most cigar websites have the same information readily available for surfers. A complete waste of 226 pages of good paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cigar book I've ever read
I must have accumulated over a dozen books on cigars over the years... this one stands out far above the rest. Not only does Dr. Camarda really now his stuff, but he presents everything you need to know aboutbuying/smoking/storing cigars in detail and with a great sense of humor. One of the best friends I ever had was a guy from "the neighborhood" (actually Long Island) who was so obviously Italian-American (and a fair slice Colombian too, if the truth be telt) that he seemed to be a parody of his own lifestyle.

5-0 out of 5 stars a laugh on every page
This book made me laugh until I cried.Clearly the author has "been there."Forget about the recipes; it's the commentary that matters.I particularly liked the cookies sent to the child at boarding school with "love from Mummy" written in the cook's handwriting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining ,Not To Be Taken as Fact !
10/24/03 The book is entertaining with much levity since it comes across absurd(e,g recipe forGreen Leaf Salad: Boston lettuce, red oak leaf lettuce,Newman's Own Salad Dressing)...or.. "Mary's Knees" :orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, lemon vodka(Absolut Citron),Grand Marnier liquer). The book does not come across "as believable",based onbooks and other mediums(TV,Magazines) for biographies and autobiographies which have exposed the "life styles" of the "low keyed" bluebloods(The Paparazzi have shown their radicals such as the Spencer Family(Princess Diana),Kelly Family (Princess Grace). The rich's conservatism with their cash have made them able to be philanthropists and "powers behind the throne" of most politicans(who do take them seriously!)..The products mentioned (in the many foods not made from scratch e.g. for "Barn Parties:"Spring Chicken Potpies( ingredients incuded4 cans of chunk white chicken(5-oz ea.)..4 cans creamy potato soup(10 oz ea.)...6 pkg. of pie crust mix (10 oz. ea)) as well as the events, categorized by season(e.g. Winter:Debutante Ball Cocktails(Pg 90)appear to show afaction not "atypical" of the sterotypes which have been depicted.(Possibly because the book shows "only leisure time"(before graduation from school,at lunches, brunches, showers, weddings, egg hunts, fox hunts);not inside the corporate board rooms or an actual easedropping of the "cigar guys" in their private clubs..
