3-0 out of 5 stars Wow - a long wait!
I don't know where else to notify you guys, but I just received my order today and I ordered the product on July 27th. Today is 8/21.Did I miss the order confirmation language that said it would take me a month to receive my order? Or is this just how Amazon operates with the AmazonPrime program? I think I'd rather pay more money and buy my books at Barnes & Noble next time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
As silly as you may expect this book to be, as a first time mom, I found it pretty darn helpful and practical. I really like the part where it tells you how to wrap the baby like a burrito, kind of like how they do it in the hospital. The nurses do it so quickly you can't really follow what they're doing, but the book actually gives you step-by-step instructions on how to do it. There's tons of great advice and tips on how to care for your newborn in the book, and you'll be laughing hysterically the whole time. Great for moms AND dads AND grandparents.
4-0 out of 5 stars hysterically funny
This is a good, amusing break from the super-serious tone of most of the how-to books available for new parents. Buy it AND the What to Expect books and you're all set for anything your baby throws your way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I recommend this book for anyone thinking about having having a baby or who is pregnant.Sometimes the best way to address tough issues is with humor and this book is hysterical.Jenny hits the nail on the head.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amusing, but not particularly innovative
There are some very funny and truthful parts of this book, but I wouldn't really call it revolutionary.Maybe most moms just don't sit around and talk honestly with their friends like I do.Not everyone will appreciate her humor or agree with some of her parenting choices.I was unimpressed with the chapter on breastfeeding. It came off as ill-informed and defensive rather than comical. But that's okay, to each her own. Overall McCarthy has a funny and self-deprecating way of writing that makes this very readable. If you're looking for light reading and some fun, this could be a good book for you.I'd recommend checking it out from the library or borrowing it from a friend though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Potential Moms
I bought this book for a funny and insightful look at what the first year may bring. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it and laughed myself into tears. It was a insightful and humorus look at what it might be like. It did not convince me to get pregnant but I am thinking about it and now have a better idea of what I'm in for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Find a laugh at the place that you need it
Georgie Jessel would have loved this book. He was endlessly talking of the 'Friar's Club' in his old routines. But the truth is this book has quite a bit of material which comes from other sources. Never mind. There are jokes here for every situation and every occasion. The one- liners are conveniently indexed under subject making it easy to decide to be amused about something and finding a particular subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ladies and Germs.....
If you have ever seen the Friar's Club in action, you already know that there is no safe haven from the one liners, roasts and put-downs. "The Friar's Club Encyclopedia of Jokes is no different. The book has over 2,000 jokes listed by subject from A-W, so unless you are a xenophobe, a yak, or a zebra, any person, idea, or subject is fair game.4-0 out of 5 stars Direct from the *true* Kings of Comedy, the Joke Enclopedia!
I love this great big joke book! I got it for Christmas, and each night before turning out the light, I'd read sections of it, and really enjoy it. To tell the absolute truth, I was *very* suprised to find MANY of the jokes from my collection of "Gross" and "Truly Tasteless" books included here, albiet in slightly altered form. I suppose there's a place in the Friar's hearts for occasional filth and rauch. But you know what? I still love it! Hey, I said I was suprised, I didn't say I didn't approve. More power to 'em, so much the better, I say. Ranging in topics from Drugs, Sex, Work, Women, Doctors, Lawyers, (a rather BIG section there) and yes, even the ethnic jokes, I guarantee you'll find the catagory in here to suit your taste, and then you'll find the perfect joke to make you split your sides! Funny, Funny and Funny..these are the best, funniest and most exciting romances I've read in a while. The vampire theme is working and in a good way Queen Betsy is the Bomb and so is Sinclair...

3-0 out of 5 stars Reads like teen fiction
Ok, let me start off by saying that I LOVED the first three or four books. But this last two (including this one) were very disappointing. It usually takes me about four hours to read the average novel - I read this book in TWO HOURS.With the exception of the sexual content, it reads like teen fiction. The storyline is VERY simple, there is very little depth to the storyline.I pre-ordered this book because I was so looking forward to it and was so disappointed. I think I'll check the next book out of the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classroom Library Addition
I bought this book for my 6th grade classroom and ended up reading it myself. It's a favorite with the students though there is a bit of nudity that I had to censor with a black marker.

5-0 out of 5 stars superb
Larry Gonick's book on statistics inspired me. I still don't understand probability but I was amused. His history text shows again that he is smarter then I am but I understoond the text and learned about the time it took to get here from the beginning of time and the maze of attorcities that leads from one powerful kingdom to another. Cartoons help make powerful messages more tolerable. I may buy all of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Informative Than A Semester In World Civ 101
The first and best volume in Mr. Gonick's history series (just when IS the fourth book coming out???) truly does present more practical information about the history of our planet and the rise of the human species, than any history class I was ever in. And whatsmore, the author has made it fun to learn all this. I understand this book was edited by the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and what a gem she found to give us! Not only would I enthusiastically recommend this and all works in Larry Gonick's series to historian or casual reader alike, I would go so far as to say these are all masterpieces of erudition and intelligent presentation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wandering story that includes stories about wandering
Stories tend to be too tightly written. After having read Castle Waiting, I realized that. The storyline goes all over the place and doesn't so much leave you hanging at the end but blow out the light and crawl into bed.
3-0 out of 5 stars Well...
I thought this looked like such a neat book. The drawings were clean and expressive, the writing was playful and fresh. But I was left wondering...well...what next?!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Bedtime Reading for the Pre-Teen Set
This collection of Medley's award-winning comic book series into a lovely 17-chapter volume should make for great bedtime reading for the pre-teen set. The setting for her graphic narrative is a classic semi-magical, medieval middle-European, fairy-tale land. The first three chapters tell of "The Curse of the Brambly Hedge", a riff on the "Sleeping Beauty" tale involving witches, a baby princess, and an entire castle enchanted into a century-long slumber. This establishes the backstory of "Castle Waiting" -- how it was abandoned and then became a refuge -- which becomes the foundation for all that follows.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic and a must read
With humor and "paradox" Professor Jerry Harvey does a great job in stimulating personal reflections about management. Among the several tales, see Management and the myth of Abraham ("every time a boss makes a stupid mistake, he sends his administrative assistant to try to rectify it"), my favorite Captain Ashok and the Concept of Grace ("Asoh told the truth, and we are starved for it") and Group Tyranny and the Gunsmoke Phenomenon (our behaviour is related to our fear of separation but we have a choice "when confronted with the possibility of group tyranny"). Enjoy your reading and start thinking.

Editorial Review

Nearly a year after the presidential election of 2004, Al Franken is still checking facts, exposing lies, and trying to clear the record as he sees it. Sneering at President Bush's declaration of a mandate after a two-and-a-half percent victory, he deconstructs Bush's 2004 platform of "fear, smear, and queers," and explains how the president has done some flip-flopping of his own. He offers comment on well-known stories, including the Terri Schiavo case, and some more obscure, such as reports of forced prostitution, indentured servitude, and squalid conditions at clothing factories in Saipan (which is part of the American Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). Franken focuses on Tom DeLay's connection to the territory and his efforts to prevent bills from being passed that would have required Saipan to follow U.S. labor laws. Iraq, too, is discussed, from its planning stages to the huge sum of money currently unaccounted for, including $8.8 billion missing from the Coalition Provisional Authority's coffers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So I went Franken on Franken and did a little checking of my own with a LexisNexis account
So I went Franken on Franken and did a little checking of my own with a LexisNexis account and I have to say that he is right almost all of the time.Good for Al to tell people the truth.I felt connected to Al in so many ways greater than just a reader.I felt as if I were sipping coffee with the man and listening to his political tirades and family anecdotes.
5-0 out of 5 stars A call to action
I was a little disappointed with Franken's last book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them (A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right). I thought it was too jokey, too silly. There was plenty of important stuff in there, but it was wrapped in a marshmallow coating of humor that prevented some people from taking it seriously, and allowed others to dismiss it outright. Not this time.
5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant piece with a ray of hope for our hijacked nation
This was the first Al Franken book I had ever read. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect. I'd heard of him once or twice, but I'm just a teenager, so I thought he was just another political writer. This book changed all of that. I am an avid reader, and I tore through it in one night's read. When I was done, I thought about what I had read, and went back to read it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great content - not a durable book, though
Okay, let me get a few things out of the way up front. First off, I generally hate textbooks. I've been in college 6 years and counting, and it's fair to say that most textbooks (regardless of subject) are written and edited in a very clueless fashion. Second, though I have many personal interests in the realm of science (quantum mechanics, string theory, and so on), it's often a major chore to study 100-level science at a university. Doubly so if it's a scientific subject you have no interest in - which in my case would be geology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Get for any Robot Lover
I loved this book. It is a good light, funny read. It gives alot of insight in regards to current technology and lets you know what is out there in response to robot hardware/software. Some parts were flat out funny and other informative. I thought it was a great book for anyone interested in robots and technogoly and where we are going. I also loved the cover of it which is a shiny, glossy eye-catching cover. One I enjoyed.

2-0 out of 5 stars A really, really, light read
A fun read, but you'll finish it in under an hour and it doesn't really lend itself to a re-read. Even the pictures are more glance at them once then move on icons than bits of art you'll ponder for more than a second.
3-0 out of 5 stars Finally, there is something we can do!
It has eluded us throughout the postmodern era, but here at last is the common enemy against which all of the good people of the world may finally unite -- in flight. Read it and weep (with tears of laughter).

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Facts
Have you ever thought up a question so completely off-the-wall, so seemingly ridiculous, that you couldn't even find the courage to ask it? Maybe at the sports bar you were transported by the beauty of your beer to wonder, "How long could I live on beer alone?" Or looking up at the night sky, you had a moment of angst, "What would happen if the moon suddenly disappeared."
5-0 out of 5 stars For the curious mind
This book is great if you're the type who doesn't accept the "status quo" answer to questions. If you don't accept something because everyone else does, but you investigate it and like to know more about the why's behind the what's, you'll love this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read for anyone that ever wondered why
A friend sent me the European version of this book for Xmas and I was blown away. How much does your head weigh? Why is snot green? This book not only provides factual, scientificaly proven answers to these questions but also is a fun and page-turning read. New Scientist is a great Brit publication so you know that the answers have real authority.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bryson cracks me up.
I have read almost everything Bryson has written and this is just another great book.He is an amazing author that can combine learning with a LOT of humor. His ability to translate humor to the page is a very rare gift and I look every few months online to see if he has published anything new.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, and falsely advertised
After immensely enjoying The Mother Tongue, I had high hopes for Made in America.Sadly, Mr Bryson let me down.
3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Illuminating Read--Just not one of Bryson's best
A reader approaching Bill Bryson's `Made in America' might well have conflicting expectations.Knowing that it's about language, the potential reader might expect the delightfully funny explication of English found in Bryson's brilliant `Mother Tongue.'On the other hand, the fact that Bryson here treats language in America, specifically American culture, might make the reader wary after Bryson's 1989 dark hatchet job on his birth country, `The Lost Continent.'
