The "official" word on what's acceptable
The official scrabble dictionary (OSD) serves its purpose: it is the authority when settling disputes. The make quality is that of your average mass market paperback, and so is the price. The definitions, on the other hand, are really perfunctory (but what do you expect?). Some words in the dictionary, like Za, Ka, and Ai, are surprising because they're not found in the commonly owned dictionaries. This makes playing with the OSD a different game, one in which it pays to memorize these little words.

Are You Smart, or What? A Bizarre Book of Games & Fun for Everyone
This extrordinary book takes you deeper than a basic quiz book. It challenges your way of thinking and seeks the reader to apply diverse and lateral thinking in order to come up with what turns out to be, the most obvious answer. It challenges the mind far more that you may think and even challenges you to think. An excelent book to improve spatal orrientation, visual ques and logical thinking. Want to improve your cognition and perception? This would have to be the way. Further more, it is great to use to encourage family members to do the same and simply - THINK. A must try to anyone wanting to indulge the brain in lateral thinking.

Wonderful fun!
I just adored this book and enjoyed every single puzzle in it.As one reviewer points out, this is a book for word puzzle enthusiasts. It might be compared to Will Shortz's "Puzzlemaster Presents" series. What I love about this book is that it can be done without the aid of a dictionary, as it uses a vocabulary from common cultural literacy (e.g. types of candy bars, etc.). I also appreciate the fact that the references aren't dated like some game books are, which can lead to frustration when I am asked to rely on my knowledge of stars from the eighties.Overall, I simply loved this book for the accessible but challenging fun it provided. I hope that Mr. Battaglia will be gracing us with another book of this type soon!

Delightful, intelligent, curiosity-satisfying
What an enjoyable book! It is so intelligently done, and provides so many satisfying answers for this curious reader. It is not a book version of the movie, nor is it an advertisement for the movie.
GREAT book...
This book has lotsa puzzles and is very informative. Merl Reagle's explanation of Making a Crossword Puzzle was an eye-opener. These geniuses explain things like the, ahem, common folk could do same. RAVE review for this great companion book.

This book has been replaced by 4th edition!
Do NOT get this book -- which contains only the THIRD EDITION of the allowable Scrabble words.If you want the FOURTH EDITION, which is current up through its publication in late 2005, use this number to search Amazon's catalog: 0877796343 which will take you to the Fourth Edition, Large Print.For some reason, you can't find it by using words like "Scrabble Large Print" to find that edition -- you have to use the ISBN number.

This dictionary is excellent to read and has definations that the smaller version does not have.

This book is out of date
I don't know why Amazon is still pushing the 3rd edition 4 months after the release of the 4th edition, which is much superior!The 4th edition is available on Amazon as well, but you have to look elsewhere for the large print (Walmart online has it). ... Read more

High quality as always
The NY Times acrostics are always challenging, which I love. If you are new to acrostics, or just want some that are a little more "mindless", then I suggest the Mensa acrostics book, they are much easier.

Several significant typos, but still rewarding
I've completed 26 books of this type (Acrostic, Acrostix, Crostic, Crostix ...), and in the others, typos were rare and insignificant -- they were in the clues.This book has several instances of mislabeled letters, a few cases where "(two words)" was missing, and one case where "(two words)" was on a one-word answer but missing from a nearby two-word answer.I was still able to solve the puzzles, however, and I enjoyed them. ... Not the same
Ehhh, it wasn't as fun as I thought it would be.It does pass the time, but is basically kinda boring and not a bit as fun as the actual game.

Wonderful for the entire family to play plus educational
My entire family has enjoyed this game.Often you find that you can't put it down - got to finish this one last puzzle.This book is also educational as it teaches younger children how to spell words correctly when you sit with them to help them find words.To bad there isn't more Boggle books!

Extremely helpful
I found this book extremely helpful.While it doesn't have every word that can be used, it does have so many words it will have your head spinning!Not every 2 & 3 letter words are in here but it's only the 1998 edition.

A great idea... but...
This book is a good idea badly executed.The two major flaws are that (1) it is nearly impossible to look things up in it because of a lack of header/footers to tell what section you are in, and (2) it is woefully out-of-date with even the two-letter words being incorrect.I found this out the hard way playing "da" a few too many times. Not helpful

Unusual word lists
The words search puzzles in this small book are, according to the author, "based on the most hilarious stuff on the planet." The word lists include such offbeat themes as stupid pet names, bad fads, common Internet acronyms, and terms for kissing and vomiting. While these themes are unusual and original, I would not call them hilarious. The edition I own has a whoopee cushion included inside the back cover - to guarantee that the solver approaches the puzzles with a silly mind-set, I suppose.

A Fun Idea, But...
I love cryptograms. I've lost hours *spell-bound* in the darn things, even though I'm not the best cryptographer.This book of puzzles is immediately appealing because it's shaped like an armchair - and that shape somehow makes it comfortable to hold and fun to see. The layout of the puzzles is interesting because the puzzle on the left page relates to the puzzle on the right page of each two-page spread. Even though the two puzzles use different codes, you can use information on one page to help figure out the code of the facing page.
So much Fun!!
I LOVED this book of puzzles! I ordered it along with another book as a package deal and didn't think it would be as entertaining. Boy, was I wrong. I really enjoyed the quotes that were so very current and the "families" that made you think. I hope to see an Armchair Puzzlers II in the near future!

Exhort word fans to partake!
I played this with friends over New Year's, and we nearly missed the fireworks at midnight because we were so engrossed in this game.It's a little slower paced than Scrabble in terms of turn length, but the anagram fun is doubled because you can use not only the cards in your hand on your turn, but rearrange any word on the board as well.One of the more strategic of the word games I've played, Royalty challenged the word-lover in me and introduced a level of competition to create the most elegant word beyond that in most other word games.Very satisfying. ... Review of Scrabblegrams
This book contains many more Scrabblegrams and for anyone who enjoys this type of Scrabble play the games are excellent.I only hope that they put out a book called "Another Big Book of Scrabblegrams"!
