5-0 out of 5 stars Ken is one funny nerd!
As with millions of others, I watched each night as Ken Jennings extended his record setting run on Jeopardy! to 74 games. He came across as a funny, down-to-earth, slightly nerdy guy on the show. And that personality really comes out in his book Brainiac, which is half Jeopardy memoir and half trivia history - and 100% entertaining.Ken recounts his days on the college bowl circuit, his tryout and subsequent preparation, and his run on the show, all the while giving the reader a history or trivia and its place in modern society.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is an entertaining book about the world of trivia
Brainiac is a book about Ken's experiences as a contestant on Jeopardy.I love reading about he prepared for the Jeopardy by studying flashcards and watching countless hours of show on tape. Jennings discusses the excitement and pressure of being a contestant. He also discusses the fame he earned, because of the success he had on the show.Brainiac is also a book about the popularity and history of trivia.Jennings traces the beginnings of trivia to small newspapers and books as far back as 1856.He discusses the popularity of quiz shows on the radio in the 1930's.He also discusses the beginning of the popularity and scandals of quiz shows on television in the 1950's and 1960's.I love the chapter in the book about the largest trivia contest held in Stevens Point Wisconsin everyApril.Over 12,000 people in 400 teams listen to trivia questions of any subject asked on the radio and call in their answers. Brainiac is also filledwith interesting trivia questions.I learned that Papua New Guinea is the only country besides Australia that has kangaroos.I also learned that Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States.I also learned that Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky.Brainiac is a well researched, entertaining and informative book about the world of trivia.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's the Opposite of "Trivial", Alex?
In this wonderful, very cleverly put-together book, Ken Jennings talks about his Jeopardy! experience, his nationwide travels to meet some big names in the trivia world (including the long-elusive Fred Worth, author of the 1970s cult classic Trivia Encyclopedia). But, most importantly for his writer, he articulates why trivia is "not so trivial" (and deserves a much more "significant" name) better than anything I have ever read on the subject--and I've read plenty in the past 30 years. Ken does just as lucid a job in describing the different kinds of trivia, what makes good trivia, and other stuff like that, that will make you appreciate the well-written question all the more.

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a good read?
Bob Harris is a working-class guy who grew up near Cleveland, Ohio.Somehow he came to live in Los Angeles, California.Bob had an outdated degree in electrical engineering with a usefulness that "ended with Pong".Bob had watched Jeopardy! with his parents as a kid.He must have wanted to be on the show because he auditioned for it at least four or five different times. In fact, Bob doesn't remember how many times he took and failed the Jeopardy! test. What he does remember is that the last time he took the test he had decided that was going to be the last time he took the test.He passed it and that began a decade long "career" as a Jeopardy! winner and loser.Bob is a five-time Jeopardy! champion. He made it to the finals of a Tournament of Champions, completed in the Masters Tournament, and won a first round in the Ultimate Tournament of Champions.
4-0 out of 5 stars He hits the Daily Double!!!
If you're a Jeopardy fan, you will enjoy this book I think.Harris offers a funny glimpse into the populat game show.As a former stand up comic, he at times is a bit over the top, manic and cloying in showing how clever or funny he can be.Nevertheless, he pulls it off with paralel themes between the game show (trivia) and key relationships in life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Even the index makes good reading
Bob Harris, a one-time "B-minus-list comedian" turned five-time Jeopardy champion, has written a memoir centered around his experiences as a contestant on the show. His Prisoner of Trebekistan--a title hearing which Alex Trebek is said to have "smiled inscrutably"--is everything you'd hope for in a comedian's Jeopardy memoir. Harris proves to be an affable, goofily amusing escort through the various stages of Jeopardy playerdom, from the tests administered to would-be contestants through the mind games played backstage in the green room to chats with Alex mid-game. Having lived it, Harris is able to describe the life of a Jeopardy contestant in training. The regimen of study he adopted makes for fascinating reading: notebooks filled with information to be absorbed (lists of presidents and Shakespearian plays and European rivers), innumerable cartoons, very often buttock-related, drawn as mnemonic aids; Harris's lifestyle and living room rearranged to facilitate his "state-dependent retrieval" of information once on stage. (Which means that he ate green-room-style food for months and moved his furniture around so it resembled the Jeopardy set.)

4-0 out of 5 stars The Outlandish companion
It was not what I thought it would be after all. I am glad I read it though. It is heplful explaining about how the author came up with the ideas for her novels and etc.. It was also interesting to know what sort of research she did for the novels or series of novels. I loved the photos of the places she went to for the information re:the sights she referred to in the novels. That was also interesting. I was hoping for a continuation of the series that was why I was a little disappointed about the actual book with this title.
3-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, but a bit over the top
As it has been years since I read the 4th book in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, I found The Outlandish Companion invaluable for synopses of the first 4 books.I also have made extensive use of the Scots-Gaelic "Dictionary" and the secondary character descriptions came in handy for refreshing my memory.I suppose some might find Jamie and Claire's horoscopes interesting or fun, but I thought that was a bit over the top.Still, for fans of her books, if like me, you get behind it's nice to have a reference.Ms. Gabaldon is an excellent researcher, so I suppose she can be forgiven if she gets a little carried away.

5-0 out of 5 stars SCOTLAND RULES!
I adore the "OUTLANDER" series and this companion book just makes this series that much sweeter!Long live Jamie & Claire!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Feldman does it again!
As a kid, asking inumerable "stupid" questions was sure to get a weary "Go look it up" from a parent. Unfortunately, as a kid, I didn't have the innumerable resources at the fingertips of the Imponderables crew. As always, David Feldman and his team of information hunters have compiled questions from all over, some of which kept me going until I read the answer!
4-0 out of 5 stars Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know..And Then Some
Do Penguins Have Knees? is a great book with a great concept. It answers all of life's little imponderables that you always wanted to know the answer to but never knew who to ask.The questions range from, "Why do cats like to be scratched behind the ears?" to "How did they keep beer cold in the Old West?".In the back of the book are Frustables (Imponderables that have not been solved), a Frustable update (new answers to old Frustables), an index to this book, and an index to all of the other Imponderables book. Why someone would put all of that in a book beats me.You look at the big book only to find that 1/3 is spent on things other than Imponderables (such as the complete index to all of the books, which I think is a stupid idea). The only flaw in this book is that there might even be too much information. They give you the answer and they keep rambling on. Some of the answers took up 2-3 pages when they had answered the Imponderable on the first page. Also, all of the names and places where they come from, for example: Bob Smith from the University of Learning Things in Yourtown, USA, seemed to clutter up the page and take away from the answer.I think this book had a great concept, but with a poor format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pondering the Imponderables
The author has a good formula going here.He takes an offbeat question and consults various experts, coming up with a plausible answer. Most of these I never would have thought to ask, but I still found myself intrigued by the answers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much use for crosswords
I bought this in the hopes it would be a good reference for solving crossword puzzles. Well, I have never once found what I needed in this book. So this is a warning to others: the trivia in it is not useful for crosswords. Since the book may be good for other things, just not what I bought it for, I gave it 2 stars. To me it's worth zero.

3-0 out of 5 stars could be a usefull resorce
lots of info, if you are a trivia fan : this is your book

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for pop culture, but has some errors
I bought this to study for a Jeopardy try out. While it is very heavy on events and people from the last 100-150 years, it does lack in more historical trivia.Definitely a nice book, but not a definitive resource for all around trivia.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Answering life's deeper questions...
The Imponderables book series by David Feldman is the pinnacle of interesting and useful bathroom reading! Since the beginning of the series, Feldman has been highlighting questions that we didn't even know we had (like exactly why is it that a mile is 5,280 feet? and where is Donald Duck's brother?) then he finds "the experts" on any given subject to answer the question. At the end of each question and answer, you are left with a little better insight into the world around you (and you can go out and impress your friends with an expanded catalog of obscure anecdotes). 4-0 out of 5 stars How Does it Know it's Not my Toe?
Here's another installment of the"Imponderables" series, which, the jacket explains, find the answers to the conundrums over which, whether you realize it or not, you have been obsessing since your very beginning. Such as:5-0 out of 5 stars a blast to read and share with others
All of Feldman's "Why Do" books are a blast. You cannot help but read them out loud to who ever is listening. Alot of fun for older kids. He even asks for help solving some of the unsolved questions. And he acceptsquestions for future books.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition - more interesting trivia
Like the prior edition this book contains a collection of trivia questions and answers that center around world culture, politics and geography. As such it is not only interesting but also educational. So many trivia books contain such obscure information that it has no value other than as a trivia question. That is not the case with either the first or the second edition of this book."World Trivia", second edition is a complete rewrite that contains none of the questions of the first edition.Michael Smith again tackles one of the most difficult areas of trivia because culture, politics and many aspects of geography are in a state of constant flux. So, while the trivia questions and answers are accurate today, within a few years many of them may not be.With well-chosen educational and truly interesting questions the book is a recommended purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but too short
"World Trivia" is a small book filled with trivia questions from around the world. Each page has a single question with the answer on the reverse. It contains an excellent selection of questions that I found genuinely interesting, however, with only one question on a page it contains only just over 130 questions. It would have been nice if there were two or three questions per page.Read more

This book is a lot of fun and it is possible to actually have some thing in it tat you did not know. However the statements or answers are limited in scope requiring you to do further research to flesh out the answer. The answers are given by contributors, not Davis Feldman. So we must rely of the credibility of the contributor. Again because of the limited answer the contributor does not feel compelled to back you the reason for the statement.

1-0 out of 5 stars A great book that you might not want to buy
This- along with all the other Imponderables Titles by David Feldman- is chock full of fascinating trivia and answers to many of Lifes little questions. If you have never read any of these Imponderable books before, I highly recommend it. However- if you are a fan of these books- you likely would be wasting your money. Why? becuase this is "When did Wild Poodles Roam the Earth" retitled, much as "Imponderables" itself- the 1st book in the series is now "Why Don't Cats Like to Swim?".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Useful Purchase
This is a rare book that actually deserves 5 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Who Says Guys Don't Want to Be Good Hosts?
A great, easy read, filled with practical advice. This book takes the "who me??" out of cool entertaining.Highly recommended by the editors of SharpMan.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentleman Entertains by John Bridges
"A Gentleman Entertains" takes a surprisingly unpretentious look at men entertaining, though the book is by no means without merit for women readers. The practical advice and simple, elegant recipes cover a broadrange of entertaining scenarios, from casual cocktail parties at home todining out, to family reunions. The South is perhaps the only place leftwhere it is still fashionable to be genteel, and Bridges lives up to hisSouthern upbringing without coming across stuffy. Leaving no stoneunturned, the book touches on everything from tipping to starting acharcoal grill to choosing the wine. Though the title suggests a certainlevel of sophistication, the author is just as quick to advise readers touse paper plates when the situation dictates as he is to recommend theproper way to garnish a cocktail. Bridges writing style is crisp and on thewry side, though he had more room to shine in "Keeping Up," adelightful series of essays on his upbringing in Slapout, Al., as well aswitty observations on life and martinis. I would have liked to have seenhim cut loose in this book a little more stylistically, but being theproper gentleman that he is, he wrote a respectable book suitable for anycoffee table. It is a fine follow up to his previous outing, "How tobe a Gentleman." I recommend it to anyone who is looking for the kindof practical advice on entertaining that bears repeating and never goes outof style. ... Read more

Some people -- like me -- enjoy reading books containing lists of peculiar or droll facts. Such books are arguably the precursor of much of the net. When I read this book years ago, I found the information therein just as the title states: fascinating. But upon further perusing of this work, I began to notice incorrect information presented as fact. For example, the deer botfly does NOT fly at the stated high speed; that fanciful notion came from a quote by etymologist Charles H. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading When You Have Nothing Else To Do
Provides interesting information on a number of topics that you never realized you needed to know - like "Why do horses in an open field always seem to stand head to tail?"Then there's "Why do roaches always die on their backs?"And "Why do women in the U.S. shave their armpits?"

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining book filled with useless trivia
"When do Fish Sleep" is a book of "Imponderables" (a term invented by the author meaning a question that cannot be answered by conventional means of reference books, calculations, or tangible means such as measuring). An example of an imponderable is "Why don't birds tip over when they sleep on a telephone wire?" or the like the title, "When do fish sleep?"

5-0 out of 5 stars I dont feel smarter, really. But I am sure I become less foolish!
When I picked it up, I was very skeptical. In this internet age I could simply search and browse for anything I can think of, or simply go to Wikipedia, if not a volume of Britannica. Luckily enough, the Campbell Soup like front cover gave me the final purchase push.
3-0 out of 5 stars Actual readable reference book
The folks at mental floss have a fun new book in the same style as their magazine. You will be reading from a chapter on literature, chemistry, art history, pop culture or economics and suddenly, there it is, you can't stop laughing.Fifteen chapters written by experts in their fields and all with that classic mental floss flavor. Would be a great graduation gift but keep one for yourself.Condensed Knowledge is better than an almanac, 'cause you can pick it up and begin reading at any point. It's full of facts, but it's funny too.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining
Yes, you can have a good read, enjoy it, and come out a bit more knowledgeable...atleast in trivia. The book is written in the same sarcastic and humorous style as the Mental Floss magazine. So if you've read an issue before, you will like Condensed Knowledge too.Don't expect any glossy pictures though. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Hard to follow
You know those books that use too many of these. . .1888 (ci) [belg.] having to do with or related to: (types of) {relative to}. . .Kinda hard to follow with all that jargon.Simple phrases aren't in there.Index doesn't really organize the words or phrases well.It is almost written like a dictionary but not in alphabetical order. The book didn't focus on phrases as much as it did single words like "cannibal" and "catacomb" and so on.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and fun
What a fun book!We often pull this one off the shelf when we use an expression and wonder where it comes from.It is a book that invites browsing, and is hard to close once you are into it.We've learned all sorts of great stuff from this book, and since language does not develop in a void, what we have gleaned from this book has led us to research and learning about other areas as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars For trivia buffs, crossword addicts and etomologists everwhe
I came across this book at a local bookstore that had a selection of books for word lovers.I perused it while I drank my frappacino, and soon was convinced I had to take it home with me.It is the most intriguing book I have ever read.It is formatted like a dictionary, but for everyone who loves word origin and other trivia, you will come back to it time and again. It is an example of useless knowledge at its best. The history of the word "omelette" is absolutely fascinating, and the evolution in the pronunciation of "one" intrigues me.They still can't decide where "hobo" comes from.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars so much to know
I love this book and now have to find the rest of his books. This book alone explains tidbits of things like the origin of the comb, or the napkin, holidays... so much. People @ my work couldn't wait to read it since I'd give out a history here and there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply, an extraordinary book!
One of my favorite reference books. It's pithy writing style is guaranteed to make learning about the many things we take for granted seem remarkable!

5-0 out of 5 stars For The Curious-Minded, This Is What You've Been Looking For
This review needn't be long, for the title tells it all.Whether you want to know the origin of blue jeans, dental floss or a comb, you'll find it here.Because for some reason or another, I am on an unfulfillable quest to always know more and more, this is the type of book I love, and one I'd recommend more than any of the others I've read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Literature Lover's Book of Lists
This book contains nearly 200 literature-related lists. The lists are organized into nine chapters:1) an introduction to literature (including definitions of literature, literary terminology and literary criticism, 2) books (including best-seller and readers' advisory lists), 3) genres, 4) poetry, 5) drama, 6) themes, 7) literary periods, 8) a catch-all chapter of lists of literary trivia, such as pseudonyms, rare book values, characters based upon famous people and authors' epitaphs, and 9) audio-books and serials. The book features a very useful table of contents which provides the titles and page numbers to all 198 lists. An author index is included as well. The lists are extensively cross-referenced and many of the lists include annotations and bibliographic references.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource
Like Steven Gilbar's "The Book Book" (see my review), this is a great item to just pick up and open; you're sure to find something interesting in it no matter what page you choose.Though not marketed as such, it will prove most interesting to parents of children from grade-school through high-school age, and may indeed be used as a compendium of reading lists by homeschoolers.Besides allusions, quotations, and definitions, the bulk of the book, as with Gilbar, is given over to lists of books--everything from "Best-Selling Books" to "1990s Literature From Around the World;" there's no reason an intelligent teen can't take a taste of everything Strouf lists.Serious-minded ones may also want to check out List #9 ("Influential Writers from Around the World"), #14 ("Literary Criticism"), and #16 ("U.S./British/Irish Critics") for ideas on where to go next. But above all, buy it for Sections 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 (Books...for All Ages, Genres...for Every Taste, Drama, Themes, and Literary Periods) and the titles and authors in Section 4 (Poetry). It's true that there are a few rather glaring typos that would have been caught by an editor who knew his books, but by searching under both author and title you should still be able to find all the items listed. Then get yourself a used copy of Gilbar (get his "Great Books" too) and "The Prentice-Hall Good Reading Guide," and you'll have a treasure trove worthy of the fabled Indies to search and sample.

3-0 out of 5 stars Handy, but not overwhelmingly impressive
This is an interesting book - there are a few intriguing lists in here. However, some of them seem a bit arbitrary. It's not overwhelmingly easy to use, either. If you're looking for a very academic book about books, don't get this one.If, on the other hand, you want a general refrence on reading and books, or are looking for reading lists and don't know where to find them, try this out.Don't expect too much. ...
