5-0 out of 5 stars you're wrong
Scrabble is not about words, and someone of your rating should know that.

5-0 out of 5 stars book is very helpful
Ising this dictionary has helped me to become a better player.

4-0 out of 5 stars The "official" word on what's acceptable
The official scrabble dictionary (OSD) serves its purpose: it is the authority when settling disputes. The make quality is that of your average mass market paperback, and so is the price. The definitions, on the other hand, are really perfunctory (but what do you expect?). Some words in the dictionary, like Za, Ka, and Ai, are surprising because they're not found in the commonly owned dictionaries. This makes playing with the OSD a different game, one in which it pays to memorize these little words.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all D&D fans
What can I say.... It's leather covers... it's silver edges.. fully updated... what more can a D&D fan want
5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing beats a leather bound book
First, I will mention up front that I am a book lover.I probably own over 3,000 books (and growing).I especially enjoy books that are good to look at and are durable, able to handle a lot of wear. This book is both. The leather cover is lovely and durable, as is the rest of the book.Since it is a book that is destined to see a lot of wear as a reference rulebook for a game, this is especially important (as it would not be for a book you may only read once). The red cloth bookmark is a nice touch (especially when contrasted with the Special Edition DMG's blue cloth bookmark when you have both books sitting on top of each other on your gaming table, their bookmarks visible).
3-0 out of 5 stars Solid, useful and a minor disappointment.
First off, I'm still giving it 3 stars because on the whole this book, at Amazon's price, is worth it for the long-term D&D player especially when you order it as a combo with the Collectors Edition Dungeon Master's Guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animal Crossing Free-For-All!
A very close friend of mine and myself are absolutely addicted to Animal Crossing: Wild World DS. We call each other almost every day with updates on our towns, who gave us thier photo, etc. It's a great game, really. Yet, some things are tricky. When can I find a balloon in the sky with a present? Which K.K. Slider song do I get this Saturday night? Which day can I watch fireworks? What time? So many questions I myself had trouble with are now answered.
2-0 out of 5 stars Where are the fish and fossil lists?
Hi, I just got this today and I was really excited, but I soon noticed that there are 14 pages missing!! The contents say that there are 158 pages, but the book goes up to only 144. The aquatic creatures list, the long-lost fossil list, the dancing gyroids list, the outdoor plantlife list, and the items index are all missing. The pages were not cut out, they are just not there. Amazon only lists that there should be 128 or so pages, but the book clearly reads 158. I'm going to contact nintendo to find out if I should expect this for every copy or if this is just a printing error.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book DOES offer more!
I use the book "Team-Building Activities for Every Group" all the time and found this book is full of just as many new and great activities, if not more! This book seems to have more active games and a wider variety of new games! I use this book for my church group, soccer team and at the ropes course where I am a facilitator.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Pleasant Surprises
The sequel to "Team Building Activities for Every Group" is another decent activity resource book by Alanna Jones. I was pleasantly surprised by the first and equally happy with this publication.Read more

Editorial Review

This book opens with an introduction to the game, follows up with instruction on advanced play, and ends with valuable information for those preparing for tournament-level competition. But there's far more to this tome than the how-to material. It's also a reference manual with such valuable information as a list of crucial but uncommon two-letter words (do you know what a "Li" is?) and a number of words that require a Q but no U. Exercise puzzles are included so you can practice what you learn. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Scrabble Book
*****
5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful instruction manual and a pleasure to read
Imagine that you are playing in the 1993 World Scrabble championship. The normal rules have been adjusted so that if one incorrectly challenges an opponent's word, there is no penalty. You are to play and it is the first move of the game. And your seven letters are AGORRTT.What do you do?
5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Principles with an Unsound Wordlist
The advice in this book ranges from the unexceptional to the outstanding, and I'm confident you can concentrate on what will really help you.I would advise that you not wait to master everything in the beginner section before at least skimming the more advanced material, inasmuch as some of that will benefit you right from the start. As with almost any activity, Scrabble is much more enjoyable when you understand some simple principles that make it easier, and this book will propel you in that direction.

Editorial Review

If you're using the 1991 edition or the 1978 original, you're woefully behind the Scrabble-playing times. With more than 100,000 2- to 8-letter words, there are some interesting additions ("aargh," "aarrgh," and "aarrghh" are all legitimate now), while words they consider offensive are no longer kosher. Why subscribe to the Scrabble dictionary's changeable lexicon? Well, it ends the argument of whose dictionary to use, but the main reason is that it's the winner's dictionary, and why play Scrabble if not to win? Memorize those 2- and 3-letter words, and your Scrabble game becomes lethal. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book has been replaced by 4th edition!
Do NOT get this book -- which contains only the THIRD EDITION of the allowable Scrabble words. If you want the FOURTH EDITION, which is current up through its publication in late 2005, use this number to search Amazon's catalog: 0877796343 which will take you to the Fourth Edition, Large Print. For some reason, you can't find it by using words like "Scrabble Large Print" to find that edition -- you have to use the ISBN number.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Supplemental Book for Beginner / Intermediate Hold'em Players
Let me start with what this book isn't.This isn't a good first book for beginnning hold'em players.A more appropriate book for a newbie would be Lee Jones' excellent "Winning Low Limit Hold'em" (especially with the new 3rd edition that I haven't had a chance to read yet, but it's almost twice the thickness of my 2nd edition). This isn't a book that gives the reader a fleshed-out system on how to play limit hold'em.It's subtitle, "From Beginner to Winner" really isn't true.I don't think this book would take a complete newcomer and turn them into a winner.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too vague and rambling
I read this after Lee Jones' excellent "Winning Low-Limit Hold'em". Krieger's book was not nearly as useful. And although it's a short book, it's not concise.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book Lou
This was a very Enjoyable Book. It provided important and useful concepts about the game of Poker. I learned new concepts, which identified some leaks in my game. Leaks in your game can come from anywhere!!! Leaks can originate from lack of aggression, overcalling raises, misreading opponents and any other number of ways. So this book helps. Many people look at poker the wrong way. They think to win they need to do all of this super fancy plays and mindblowing stunts. Well folks...there are not that many options in poker...you fold, call or raise. So its really hard to do thinks that will just fool your opponents all the time. To win at poker it is mostly limiting your mistakes and getting all that you can from winning hands and minimizing losses on losing hands...that's it Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
For anyone who plays card games and other popular games, like backgammon, checkers, and chess, this book is absolutely essential. This book is next to the table so whenever anyone plays cards in my family the book is at hand. Any time I have a question on how many cards to deal for a game or how to total points or anything, we use this book. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sine qua non

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Each chapter offered great advice on the mental game of pool.Immediately after reading the book, I could tell that my game had picked up a notch.(And exactly one month after reading the book, my 8-ball skill level in my pool league was also raised a notch.)
5-0 out of 5 stars A Pool Players Pocket Guide...
This small, but powerful book is essential for the player who wants to raise their game and move on to the next level.I try and play pool everyday.I can make shots, no problem.Once you conquer the fundamentals and basics it's time to move on and extend your skills: your mental skills.
5-0 out of 5 stars It Changed Me
Here is a book that destroys all of the new age lingo about playing pool as related to your mind. No Zen hints here, you will learn how to realistically look at yourself, your competition, and most importantly why you play the game. It isn't a tutorial on the game, I think that this is an outstanding read that applies to anyone who competes at anything period. An absolute must have for your library. (I own two copies!) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book won me a major tournament!
Just hours after finishing "More Hold'em Excellence," I went to a No-Limit Texas Hold'em tournament and won $550!I definitely feel that this book helped me to win that tournament... and many more since then.I would seriously recommend this book to anyone who wants a well-written book on Texas Hold'em!!!
2-0 out of 5 stars Too general, but beginners might find some value
If you've played for a while, skip this. If you're just starting, this is worth the price of the book, but no more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whole Lotta Wisdom to Give.
Yes, the word "wise" might be the best way in which to describe Lou Krieger. He's not only a poker player and a journalist. He's a renaissance man who's spent time studying life in general. His is an extremely unique perspective for a poker writer, and I'm surprised it took me this long to discover him. Before I bought the book, all I knew about him was that he was the face of Royal Vegas poker which is not a compliment as it has to be my least favorite online website ever. Yet here Krieger gives readers a plethora of priceless insight over the course of 36 chapters. They flow together nicely and there's nothing disjointed about the work. I loved his chapter, "American Dreamer," where he makes a compelling case that poker is, in many ways, the essence of America, and he also takes the time to praise free speech and lambaste political correctness-which is extremely needed and one more reason why you should take the time to acquaint yourself with this edition. Another rare element to be found in these pages is the professional poker player quiz in the back. There are 60 some "Yes/No" questions that really put turning pro into perspective. I took it myself and learned quite a few things about my game by scoring it. The only criticism I have is of the hand chart in the back of the book. It's way too LAG (loose-aggressive player) for me. He's got you playing KJ offsuit in any position and that gives me the heebie-jeebies. Maybe if one has Lou's level of skill you can play 8/7 offsuit in late position, but stuff like that would break me. For hand analysis, I would check out Ed Miller's recommendations in Small Stakes Hold `Em if I were you. Although, Krieger has put together one heckuva book and I thank the guy for it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but definitely NOT for beginners!
I found this to be an excellent book, GO looks and sounds 'easy', but can become so complex (frustrating?) as to leave people tossing the board and walking away.I know, I had this happen.Maybe it's just me, but it took quite some time before I could understand what the object of the game was.Of course, it's to capture territory and amass your opponent's stones, but HOW?I had another book (badly translated from Japanese) that taught me ANOTHER way to play, if you can believe that, so it might just be this isolated case.I tried to interest others in the game but their first question was WHY? followed by HOW?I would recommend another book for the beginner, perhaps the Janice Kim books, and use this as a reference.I must say, though, once you learn to play GO, you WILL become addicted.I must GO now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Examples Galore
This book is in the style of most Go books in its use of examples an nearly every page. For the beginner this can be difficult to cope with but it is important nonetheless. While it suffers from being only one book, it is a wonderful way to start the path of a beginner because it feels like you're playing with someone instead of just trying to read and remember.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great monster book for a great rpg system
I really love this book because it gives you a huge range of interesting monsters for the d20 Modern game. The artwork is very nice and well done and the history/ecology of the monsters is a pleasure to read, many of the creatures have a very x-files, urban myth kind of feel to them which adds to how creepy they are.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes sci-fi, not just role players.Just reading the book gives me tons of adventure ideas...I can't wait for a Menace Manual II!

4-0 out of 5 stars D20 modern menance manual
I thought this was a well-written, well-made book. It has a ton of information on so many different organizations that you should never run out of bad guys, though it would be fun to try. In addition to the info on the many organizations it has it's own monster manual. It would be nice to have picture of all the different baddies but there are only so many pages I guess. All in all I think this book would be very helpful to most campaigns.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book, good short bios, but analysis over my head
good book, good short bios, but analysis over my head

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I can't imagine how anyone could give anything less than 5 stars for these books, when you compare them to the rest of the chess market. This entire series is probably one of the greatest literary works in the history of chess.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not really a work of genius.
I obtained acopy of this book mainly because i was interested on the section about Botvinnik. Kasparov or Plisetsky gives a reasonable account ofBotvinniks chess career and this is easily the best section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I found this book extremely helpful. While it doesn't have every word that can be used, it does have so many words it will have your head spinning! Not every 2 & 3 letter words are in here but it's only the 1998 edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars A great idea... but...
This book is a good idea badly executed. The two major flaws are that (1) it is nearly impossible to look things up in it because of a lack of header/footers to tell what section you are in, and (2) it is woefully out-of-date with even the two-letter words being incorrect.I found this out the hard way playing "da" a few too many times.1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful
I found this book to be close to useless--extremely hard to figure out how it's supposed to be organized, close to impossible to find anything. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Series
I have gone through all the previous volumes including this one, and found it to be an excellent tool to improve my playing. I have been playing for a few years and have used a lot of internet resourses, and have never seen some of the pearls presented in this series. The "templates of fighting" chapter and its use further in the book was eye opening. Complaints I have read by other reviewers, like "what does developing the centre mean?" show that this book is too advanced for their level of play, or have not read or paid attention to previous volumes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book as part of the set
This is a very well written book, that makes lots of good points and demonstrates them well.It should not however be read without first reading and understanding the previous 4 books in the series.A medium kyu player should find this book helps improve them, while a beggining player will encounter only frustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to Play Go

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad in principle. Shallow in depth.
The most attractive quality of this book is its ease of understanding. It introduces important strategic concepts of go such as reducing Vs. invading in a way even the most recent beginner can understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Less Organized, More Thoughtful
This is currently the last of four books written by Janice Kim and Jeong Soo-hyun.The first two volumes are designed to take a newcomer to the game of Go and help them achieve a modest but significant level of competence. The third volume is best suited to the player who has achieved some comfort with hand-to-hand combat and is ready to approach the more complex tactical and strategic levels of the game. This volume focuses on the middle game, where territory is truly lost or gained.A player must walk a tightrope between strategy and tactics in this phase while balancing attack and defense.Read more
