5-0 out of 5 stars Great game to play with close friends
This is a great game to play with close friends that are into their growth and self-development. I say close friends because the game can bring up quite personal stuff and it can be uncomfortable to be that "naked" amongst strangers (been there, done that, wasn't fun). You also need to play it with people that are willing to set a side a few hours to play with their personal growth: the game can be a little long winded in the beginning and some people get impatient. However, provided you are playing it with the right people, this is a real workshop in a box and excellent as tool to delve into areas of one's life that are not quite working: it seems to be excellent at pinpointing areas of denial and uncomfortable little issues that one has been sweeping under the carpet. Hence why you need to play this with close and trusted friends.
5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Growth was never so much fun!
I got my first game of transformation over a dozen years ago.I use it today, and buy it as gifts for friends! From the designers of "Angel" cards this game is designed to help you explore any question or topic of your choice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Uncanny opportunity to heal yourself..workshop in a box!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text on bidding for today's duplicate
Hardy does a great job of explaining today's bidding for duplicate auctions. Although I have not yet finished the book, the first half is chock full of bidding help and tips that hopefully will help my game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Content, but Strangely Presented
What this book is NOT meant for:Not meant for a complete beginner -- this is not a "Learn how to play bridge" book. This book presupposes the knowledge of terms that belong to someone that has already learned at least enough bridge to sit at a table and play (although not necessarily very well). This is a book that is more geared towards teaching someone that already knows something about bridge (and bidding in particular), and gives him/her a self-contained, complete description of the current "standard".I place standard in quotes because I consider his referring to the 2/1 system as "standard" not yet totally accurate (though perhaps before long it will be).Nowadays, at most clubs in the US, you will see a significant percentage of players, even experts, that hold to older standards. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book
If you call yourself an Advanced player you have got to get this book.Hardy describes in depth, the current modern bidding techniques. He starts with two over one, game force and addsin conventions and gadgets that should make your bidding much more accurate. His examples and quizzes are very well edited.Of all the bridge books I own (many), I would call this one "my bible." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pinball book with high quality pictures
You can't go wrong picking this one up. A must for any pinball enthusiast or beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For A Pinhead
This is a wonderful work of Pinball Book Art.I checked out this book from my local library and it is a must have. The book is heavy and very well made. The photos are very detailed as well. The book takes a certain aspect of the game such as scoring and breaks that parts of the game down, while the next chapter may focus on pinball sound. The book has so much information in it about history, features, and rare pinball features.A book of this size is bound to have a few mistakes and this book has a few small mistakes, but those are very minor and this is a very detailed work and there is no way one man can know it all about pinball. If you enjoy the game of pinball, you need to check out this book.It will not show you how to repair or maintain the game, its focus is history about the game and its evolution over time.I hope you enjoy this book and also keep enjoying playing the wonderful game of pinball.

Editorial Review

This book opens with an introduction to the game, follows up with instruction on advanced play, and ends with valuable information for those preparing for tournament-level competition. But there's far more to this tome than the how-to material. It's also a reference manual with such valuable information as a list of crucial but uncommon two-letter words (do you know what a "Li" is?) and a number of words that require a Q but no U. Exercise puzzles are included so you can practice what you learn. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Scrabble Book
*****
5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful instruction manual and a pleasure to read
Imagine that you are playing in the 1993 World Scrabble championship. The normal rules have been adjusted so that if one incorrectly challenges an opponent's word, there is no penalty. You are to play and it is the first move of the game. And your seven letters are AGORRTT.What do you do?
5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Principles with an Unsound Wordlist
The advice in this book ranges from the unexceptional to the outstanding, and I'm confident you can concentrate on what will really help you.I would advise that you not wait to master everything in the beginner section before at least skimming the more advanced material, inasmuch as some of that will benefit you right from the start. As with almost any activity, Scrabble is much more enjoyable when you understand some simple principles that make it easier, and this book will propel you in that direction.

Editorial Review

If you're using the 1991 edition or the 1978 original, you're woefully behind the Scrabble-playing times. With more than 100,000 2- to 8-letter words, there are some interesting additions ("aargh," "aarrgh," and "aarrghh" are all legitimate now), while words they consider offensive are no longer kosher. Why subscribe to the Scrabble dictionary's changeable lexicon? Well, it ends the argument of whose dictionary to use, but the main reason is that it's the winner's dictionary, and why play Scrabble if not to win? Memorize those 2- and 3-letter words, and your Scrabble game becomes lethal. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book has been replaced by 4th edition!
Do NOT get this book -- which contains only the THIRD EDITION of the allowable Scrabble words. If you want the FOURTH EDITION, which is current up through its publication in late 2005, use this number to search Amazon's catalog: 0877796343 which will take you to the Fourth Edition, Large Print. For some reason, you can't find it by using words like "Scrabble Large Print" to find that edition -- you have to use the ISBN number.

5-0 out of 5 stars The brilliant component that made D&D happen
More than the Dungeon Master's Guide, more than the Player's Handbook, this book is what made D&D the gaming force that it was for over a decade.
5-0 out of 5 stars AHH Nostalgia!
Just surfing and had to say I love this book.I still have the dog-eared copy I bought in 1979 safely tucked away, 7th grade scribbles and all.I saved my paltry allowance for a month to buy this baby. This is one of those books that always has a place in your heart. Not really useful anymore though for the new gamer, go pick up the updated one (MM 3.5 edition version), but for us vets, back in the day it was all about this bad boy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kolbolds laying the smackdown
This book is the ultimate Monsters Manual, the first is the best. It gives you specific details on monsters. Being that I only have 2 hit points, I have to pick my monsters carefully. Once, while at Burgermaster, a kolbold threw a burger at me with his sling. He rolled a 20, a critical hit, and the burger did 2x the normal damage, knocking me out for 2 hp! As I lay unconcious, a gelatinous cube slowly slimed my burger and fries up. When I came to, I saw him slowly digesting my burger and fries and I exclaimed "How rude!" But the Gelatinous cube just rumbled his gelationous bulbous stomach at me. I would have kicked it's ass, but luckily the Monster Manual told me that would've been a bad idea to use my hands. So instead I used my bic lighter and he apologized for eating my combo#1. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most excellent psychic board!
I have used this board for going on 5 years now (I have had to replace this board because we keep wearing the poor things out) and I have never not once had a bad experience with the Psychic Circle. Usually it is my cousin and I that use the board and we have to sit at the same place. The board is very very picky about where we sit. If you are have trouble using your board, may I suggest that you find which direction suits your character/personality better. For instance, I am always North when I use it with my cousin who is always South. But when I use the pathfinder board with my mother I have to sit at the South position. It may be tedious to find your correct position but you will love the outcome it will give you. To use your psychic circle I would like to also suggest that you put the elements at each corresponding corner also. For air/incense, for water/water, for earth/crystals/rocks, and for fire/a lit candle. Also, we always always put a circle of salt around us. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Vivid colors and imagery
This board offers so much more of an enriching experience than standard boards. What a wonderful way to use all these symbols!I find it especially productive for working alone, as opposed to a plain board. There is so much on the board that I forget what is there, and am then surprised when the circle goes over a certain word that I wasn't expecting. The first time I used it was a little awkward, and the circle went straight to "goodbye" and off the board, but I've since found it to be enlightening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful version of a Ouija board
There is not a lot to add to the other reviews. I have been using this board for a while and it supplied lot of interesting information. Among other things it told me about a previous life in another country, on another continent. I had never been to that country and I never heard of the little town there. Out of curiosity I looked for that town's name and history and was amazed to find it to be a real place.

5-0 out of 5 stars A few words, problems and answers, again, again, ...
This book introduces different life and death situations and variations of them. Actually the book has 36 groups of different shapes of life and death situations. Every group has the same vital characters which are explained with few words and examples. After that thera are a few problems and pretty good answers to problems. This happens again in every chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but definitely NOT for beginners!
I found this to be an excellent book, GO looks and sounds 'easy', but can become so complex (frustrating?) as to leave people tossing the board and walking away.I know, I had this happen.Maybe it's just me, but it took quite some time before I could understand what the object of the game was.Of course, it's to capture territory and amass your opponent's stones, but HOW?I had another book (badly translated from Japanese) that taught me ANOTHER way to play, if you can believe that, so it might just be this isolated case.I tried to interest others in the game but their first question was WHY? followed by HOW?I would recommend another book for the beginner, perhaps the Janice Kim books, and use this as a reference.I must say, though, once you learn to play GO, you WILL become addicted.I must GO now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Examples Galore
This book is in the style of most Go books in its use of examples an nearly every page. For the beginner this can be difficult to cope with but it is important nonetheless. While it suffers from being only one book, it is a wonderful way to start the path of a beginner because it feels like you're playing with someone instead of just trying to read and remember.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating "inside look"
Let me preface my comments by saying that I love these types of books:the "inside looks" into a world with which I'm unfamiliar.I've played scrabble less than five times in my life, and yet Fatsis has kept me interested, enthralled even, for the duration of the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting.
Stefan Fatsis, Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession ni the World of Competitive Scrabble Players (Houghton Mifflin, 2001)
2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I really, really wanted to like this book and actually gave two copies as presents before I'd even read it myself.Sadly though, I'm still slogging through it and it is tough going.Though I'm not even in the realms of the blue-hairs, I do love Scrabble and thought I'd be interested in the in-and-outs but am finding his style of writing tedious and annoying at best.I like when he talks about other players or the history of the game but find myself falling asleep when he talks about his tournament games and attempts to memorize words.I'd recommend this book only for those so obsessed with the game that they'd care enough to know all the four letter possibilities and why SATINE is such a perfect word. For the rest of you (us), use what free-time you have to just enjoy the game. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the way to Go
Suppose you wanted to learn to play chess or bridge.Well, you would ask people to tell you the rules. And you would improve just by trial and error. But you might also need something you could use for a textbook or reference that would guide you through the steps to become more than a beginner. That's true in Go as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent second book of go
This was the second book I purchased for learning go (the first was Charles Matthew's 'Teach Yourself Go'). For the beginner, Go can be somewhat frustrating to get into. There is a plethora of books that will teach you the basic rules, but these can also be learned from a variety of web sites.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I found this book extremely helpful. While it doesn't have every word that can be used, it does have so many words it will have your head spinning! Not every 2 & 3 letter words are in here but it's only the 1998 edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars A great idea... but...
This book is a good idea badly executed. The two major flaws are that (1) it is nearly impossible to look things up in it because of a lack of header/footers to tell what section you are in, and (2) it is woefully out-of-date with even the two-letter words being incorrect.I found this out the hard way playing "da" a few too many times.1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise
Mr. Del Rosario is an expert in the subject of teaching chess. I have first-hand knowledge of this and vouch for his abilities. This book is clear, very well designed, and he gets right to the point. Definitely worth a place in the library of chess players of all levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good book for Average players
4.5 Stars
5-0 out of 5 stars Economy & Lucidity a la Morphy
Nineteenth century American prodigy Paul Morphy never wrote anything about how to play chess, but his games are sparkling examples of classical chess principles at work. He had a talent for discovering magical moves that wound his opponents up in knots -- check, check, and mate out of nowhere. How did he do it? Everyone agrees that it was his insight into principles and his tactical genius that allowed him to dominate the greatest masters of Europe in his day. So, a book of Morphy's games would be entertaining and inspiring. But Frisco del Rosario has done more than compile brilliancies from Morphy's games -- he uses carefully selected games as case studies to illustrate principles enunciated by chess writers such as Fine, Horowitz, and Purdy. On the one hand, you have a principle, such as "Develop with threats" and on the other you have an application, "Morphy vs. Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard." The back and forth between principle and illustrations is well-choreographed and told in a lean and lucid manner. The beauty of this approach is del Rosario's choice of games to illustrate the principles -- they are all crystal clear. The cumulative wisdom of the principles themselves form a unified approach to good chess. Very helpful are del Rosario's explanations of tactical sidelights that informed the decisions of Morphy and his opponents. Some authors go overboard on this and leave you mired in detail. Not in this book. The text, like the games of Morphy, moves quickly. Read it and play through the examples for enjoyment, and you'll feel the effects next time you're faced with a decision over the board. ... Read more

The book is highly recommended if you are a beginner, and have never held a go stone.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely well done and entertaining guide to latter-day pinball.
Having grown up in the age covered primarily in this book, I found the latest of the author's fine books on pinball to an excellent and entertaining read.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is where Go starts to get hard
This review is very general and it not intended to address specific concepts within the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
For the beginners, like myself, the book is fantastic! As a matter of fact, the whole series is brilliant: Janice Kim and Jeong Soo-hyun start with the explanation of the game's rules, and step by step walk you through the principles of its strategy and tactics. In this particular volume, three really-played games are reviewed with dozens of comments 'why-this-play-now-but-not-the-other-one', so after a wile you feel go is not anymore a dark jungle full of white (if you are just playing black) or black (if vice versa) monsters, like it used to be before, but a very logic stream of causes and consequences arising from a particular play.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect entry to upper kyus (20-15) and good refreseher for everyone else
Its rather surprising that the authors were able to condense so many useful proverbs into a single volume. The explanations are carefully thought out and explained, and they aren't based off impossible or labyrinthian setups, but positions than can and, as I have seen myself, arise in actual games. The self-testing section at the end of the book is precise and helps to reinforce the lessons presented, and yet simple enough that you don't require a board of your own to lay the problems out on. And even upper level players(10-8 kyus) would find this book useful as refresher. It was quite surprising how many knee-jerk reactions even I had that were brought up at some point.

5-0 out of 5 stars you're wrong
Scrabble is not about words, and someone of your rating should know that.

5-0 out of 5 stars book is very helpful
Ising this dictionary has helped me to become a better player.

4-0 out of 5 stars The "official" word on what's acceptable
The official scrabble dictionary (OSD) serves its purpose: it is the authority when settling disputes. The make quality is that of your average mass market paperback, and so is the price. The definitions, on the other hand, are really perfunctory (but what do you expect?). Some words in the dictionary, like Za, Ka, and Ai, are surprising because they're not found in the commonly owned dictionaries. This makes playing with the OSD a different game, one in which it pays to memorize these little words.
