5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise your brain!
Research shows that the brain should be exercised just as the rest of the body is exercised for long-term health and function. English crosswords do more than test your trivia knowledge; they make you look into word origins, puns, anagrams, and regional language, as well. The Daily Telegraph puzzles are challenging and amusing, giving you 2 clues to each answer so you know when you have found the right word or phrase. One really gets better with practice, butthey remain challenging for me after 40 years of doing them. Carry them around in your pocket for those times when you are waiting for an appointment, and see the time race by! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Guide Helped Me More Than Any Other
This is the book that got me started on cryptic puzzles.I had read various free pamphlets offered by newspapers and magazines that ran British cryptics and I had looked at online guides. It didn't all come together until I worked through this book. One nice thing is that, in addition to explaining the various types of clues and how to solve them, the authors provide lots of progressively more difficult practice puzzles thatslowly but surely get you into the whole cryptic puzzle mindset.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get ready for a challenge
For those of you who are getting bored with conventional crossword puzzles and want to try something different, try a cryptic crossword. It combines the grid and clues of a regular crossword with a bit of wordplay to make it tougher and more interesting. This book provides excellent instructions on how to solve one, with plenty of examples and 8 warm-up puzzles. Next come 15 standard block cryptic puzzles for you to practice on. Then comes the type of cryptic puzzle that Cox and Rathvon are known for:their variety cryptics. These puzzles have a extra twist to them, such as missing clues or grid letters, words changing direction or position in the grid, modified letters, and other devilish permutations to keep you on your toes. These 50 variety cryptics are taken from the pages of the Atlantic Monthly. Finally, Cox and Rathvon provide a couple of chapters on the rules and strategies for creating your own cryptic puzzles.5-0 out of 5 stars how-to
Cox and Rathvon are the best in the biz at cryptic crosswords, and this is an excellent introduction to their work. They have written a very clear and helpful explanation for how cluing works in cryptics, and also a variety of puzzles to practice with, ranging from those for rank beginners to some "variety" cryptics that will challenge savvy, experienced solvers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a great book which makes you laugh after solving each cryptogram, and I've been doing a few cryptograms a day for the last month. One can do it without clues or opt to have one or two clues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Have lots of fun with codes.
This inexpensive, sturdy, entertaining book contains 400 humorous, comical and sometimes even witty quotes, drawn from a myriad of personalities and encoded in challenging substitution cipher, guaranteed to keep you busy for hours.
3-0 out of 5 stars A fun book but definitely NOT error free
At this writing, I have worked 283 puzzles and have found three of them to have errors (puzzles 59, 256 and 272). While solving the puzzles has been fun, it's disconcerting to stumble across an error.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Challenging - Good for Beginners
All of the cryptograms in this collection (400 to be exact) are quotes from a wide assortment of famous personalities from Winston Churchill to Mick Jagger. For those experienced in cryptograms, this collection won't be terribly challenging, but it will be a good introduction for beginners. If any puzzles prove too tricky, Nash offers not one, but two clues each in the back of the book.(Of course the answers are there too, but don't cheat!)A few challenging puzzles, but most are moderate or easy.Again, a nice place to start if you are new to cryptograms.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I wish I had read the reader review before I bought this book. The puzzles do, indeed, seem to have been "dumbed down."After the Atlantic Monthly compilation, which I adore, this is a great disappointment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mensa?More like Metza.
There are 65 standard cryptics in this book. They all appeared in Canada's National Post. The entries are, by and large, fairly common words. The clues seem to be a little dumbed-down for a broad newspaper audience. This a pretty good collection of standard charades, obvious anagrams, and easy definitions. Few puzzles will take longer than 20 minutes to solve. You'll rarely have to check the answers, and then only for some obscure Canadian place name or celebrity. The "Mensa" title is a bit of a come-on.Emily & Henry's "Atlantic Monthly Cryptic Crosswords" is much more interesting. This one is, frankly:

4-0 out of 5 stars Great first book on cryptics
This book has been my constant companion. The spiral format makes it durable and easy to use.A good first book on cryptics.Hard enough to be fun, easy enough to be solvable, although I've yet to find one I can do in an hour.(2 hours was my best time so far).
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book of cryptics
I've been learning to do Cryptics from Games Magazine (they have 2 in each issue), and this set from the New Yorker is, as others have said, easier. Still very nice and satisfying for those who like to roll through one in under an hour. They are light, but light in the realm of Cryptics. The instructions and tutorial puzzles are excellent for the beginner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Puzzling
I love cryptic crosswords! Sometimes the answer is intuitive, but most of the time clue analysis is required.
