High quality as always
The NY Times acrostics are always challenging, which I love. If you are new to acrostics, or just want some that are a little more "mindless", then I suggest the Mensa acrostics book, they are much easier.

Several significant typos, but still rewarding
I've completed 26 books of this type (Acrostic, Acrostix, Crostic, Crostix ...), and in the others, typos were rare and insignificant -- they were in the clues.This book has several instances of mislabeled letters, a few cases where "(two words)" was missing, and one case where "(two words)" was on a one-word answer but missing from a nearby two-word answer.I was still able to solve the puzzles, however, and I enjoyed them. ... Delightful indulgence for the mystery/puzzle fan

Binding
Haven't used it yet but was disappointed that I didn't pick up in the description that it wasn't spiral bound.Lots of puzzles but working with it will be annoying.Not sure, but I thought the paper stock was not as heavy as spiral bound crostics.I have a feeling I'll have to forego half the puzzles because of that.

RANDOM HOUSE CROSTICS VOL. 9
A BETTER QUALITY PAPER, THAT IS, WHITER, WOULD MAKE THESE PUZZLES EASIER TO READ.A LITTLE MORE HUMOR WOULD MAKE THEM FIRST RATE.

Crostic Lovers -- check this out!
Fun and challenging crostics. The puzzles in this book are rated as medium difficulty, with the style halfway between "middle of the road" and "contemporary" (via the "Random House PuzzleMeter"). Nice size with steel spiral spring binding. Pages are good-quality paper that accepts pencil well, yet erases easily and cleanly.

LITTLE BIT OF A LETDOWN
Michael Ashley's previous four volumes of crostics were exceptionally good and fun to solve.Michael has given us crostics that don't rely on ridiculously esoteric clues, such as quotes from Shakespeare, unheard of islands, etc.Instead, Ashley uses contemporary clues to solve his puzzles.He also doesn't quote from stuffy writers, etc.Read more

Rewarding for the crostic fan who has mastered Middleton
Duerr's choice of clues are either rewarding or fun, or both.They are not trivial.His choice of quotes, about 250 letters average, make for long clues and more challenging puzzles than those found in the Sundaypapers.Once you get on to his style, you are spoiled for the rest. ... Read more

pre-1975 maybe
I'm an avid crostics fan, and a fair trivia buff, but I could NOT enjoy any of these puzzles.At least the first 10 or 11, as I didn't bother to continue past those.Too many of these are targeted way too early for my generation, and the ones that were more current were extremely obscure.I couldn't even tease myself along by trying to check only the quote authors/answer source.I hope someone MUCH more obsessed with trivial knowledge and of an older generation will enjoy this more.

A Good Challenge
While I'm not a huge fan of crostics (I find them pretty tedious to solve, with all of the back-and-forth in writing letters), I tried this book since I often enjoy Henry Hook's puzzles. Read more

Too Easy
The only good ones were the expert ones, and even they were too easy. If you want a challenge, not something mindless, then get the NY Times Acrostics, or the NY Times Sunday Variety Puzzles, which includes acrostics, diagramless, etc.

Challenging Acrostic Puzzles
Great for keeping the cobwebs out during spring break. Several of us passed it around and turned the puzzles into a 'group' effort. They were great. Not stuffy, not so academic that no one cared, but challenging and difficult--fun to work. And relevant. Great fun, good for competition and full of surprises. I'm not an acrostic nut, but really enjoyed this collection.

Challening without being mind-numbing
This is a fairly good set of acrostics.The clues require a fairly broad knowledge of pop trivia of the 20th and 21st century, as well as a number of SAT words.They *don't* require knowledge of things like "The fifth in the line of Plantagenet kings," or "Scholarly volume outlining the history of Sri Lanka," which some of the Middleton acrostics need.I could solve these puzzles without having to access reference books, but also could not get more than 60% of the answers to any one puzzle's clues on my first pass.In short, they can be completed, and take a reasonable amount of thought and knowledge. ...
