4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty & Pretty Clever
The first thing to notice about this Lost Girls collection is how beautiful it is.The artwork is very attractive and it comes as three large volumes in a boxed set that is reminiscent of the collections of fairy tales the authors are emulating.Of course, you wouldn't want to inadvertently leave this on your child's bookshelf because this is a collection that is clearly for adults.
2-0 out of 5 stars Vulgarity Without Redemption
What we have here is Moore retelling the stories of "Peter Pan", "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Wizard of Oz".He strips the tales of their fantasy elements, placing the characters of Wendy, Alice and Dorothy in real life situations of sexual awakening.Of course the idea of fairy tales and folklore carrying at their heart, themes of sexuality, is nothing new, but here Moore puts aside any pretense of masking those themes behind the fantastic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Adults Only Reimagined Fairy Tales
Suppose you actually met Dorothy from Wizard of Oz or Wendy from Peter Pan and they at down to tell you the strange sordid tales of their lives before and after the worlds fpound in the books that made them famous. Then suppose they invited you up for a spot of tea and some sexual adventures. Sound strange? No more than this tome of sexually explicit tales that the most famous characters in childhood literature recount to one another over tea and crumpets. Well, not really cumpets, but it sure sounds British, doesn't it. Buy this only if you have a deeper understanding of sexual literature and the dark world of Alan Moore, one of the greatest authors in the history of the comic book. This i not a book for children, but it's also not an illustrated Ribald Tale that used to pop up in Playboy. It delves deeply into the psychology of sex and hints that our favorite characters from Peter Pan etc. were actually quite mad. Moore tries his best to acknowledge Freud's tenet that all of human emotions are derived from the depths of our sexual core and that such dreams and thoughts reflect the very basis of all human behavior. This is not for children or even young adults as the illustrations, which are very graphic, can obscure the very witty and intelligent dialogue when viewed by the immature mind. It is the storyline that makes this effort so attractive and at the same time repulsive to the reader but it is at the very worst stimulating reading and at the very best..well.. stimulating reading. ... An emperor amasses an army of hundreds of thousands, drawn from twocontinents, to invade a third continent and conquer a tiny, divided nation. Onlya few hundred warriors stand against them. Yet the tiny nation is saved. Itsounds like the plot of a preposterous fantasy novel. It is historical fact. In481-480 B.C., King Xerxes of Persia raised forces in Asia and Africa and invadedGreece with an army so huge that it "drank rivers dry." 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!
This is a georgeous folio book.Frank Miller at his best.Dark and vivid. This book was out of print for a while, and it is an absolute treasure to own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Herodotus meets Sin Cityand gets whacked.
I was hoping that Miller would turn his talents from the dark side and we would see how well he could reproduce a Classical Epic. What we get is a blood splattered "300 Lacedaimons in the Hood".The Spartans are presented to be a buch of Homo erotic Rastafarians. The Persians rather than the Noble Middle Eastern Autocrats presented in their Art are drawn by Miller to resemble African American Gangstas with piercings and Skin art everywhere.I was looking for Xerxes to have a grill and whitewalls on his chariot.
5-0 out of 5 stars I will always think of this as 'Zoo.'What can I say?I'm special.
But do not miss this trade paperback. The story is as fine as you'll ever read, a tale as old as time. And the artwork is fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for establishing your comics
Scott Mccloud's Making Comics resembles a constitution for those want to establish their comics either as a hobby or as a carrier. It goes through so many details regarding creating your panels, establishing scenes, storytelling, characters designs and feelings, drawing styles, and the list goes on. Simply, the book gives you a guideline for establishing a living world in papers. What makes "Making Comics" unique is that it can teach you how to be a comic artist even if you're not good enough in drawing. The book illustrates the fundamentals of drawings comics and let you be creative for starting your own comic book. All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book, and it will help me a lot for my comics' drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disagree with review below--this is a remarkable book!
The previous reviewer accuses Scott McCloud of lacking the authority to write a guide to making comics. But McCloud's book is based on clear demonstration, not on authority.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's no OHOTMU, but it does the job
In the style of their 2004 publication, "The DC Comics Encyclopedia," Dorling Kindersley have released "The Marvel Encyclopedia," a guide to the characters of the Marvel Comics universe. DK are no strangers to Marvel's universe, having frequently released "Ultimate Guide" books covering the histories of Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and next year, Ghost Rider. But how does this tome, touted as "the definitive guide," stack up?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent graphic novel that is compelling nearly 20 years later.
Sales of V for Vindetta increased dramatically when the movie came out earlier this year.I happened to be one of those guys that wanted to read the graphic novel before I saw the movie.I am so grateful that I did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici
This was the first Alan Moore graphic novel that I have read, and I must say I was very pleased. This novel is much weightier than I expected as it grapples with philosophical and political issues such as "what is the government's responsibility to it's citizens?", and "can a terrorist be a hero?".The writing is definitely top notch, and the artwork was very good (not as good as Frank Miller's Sin City series, but still quite good).I would definitely recommend this graphic novel as well as the film adaptation (read the novel first if possible - I believe I enjoyed the film version much more having read the original source).

5-0 out of 5 stars Anarchy Vs. Fascism
A stones throw from the concept of the movie, which seemed to be Democracy vs. Fascism, this book read quite a bit better than the movie played. The movie was truly a good movie, so then it must follow that this book is an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly deserves the honor it holds being in the Top 100 Novels of all-time.
In 2004 Time magazine came out with the Top 100 novels of all time.In the top 25 was the only comic book/graphic novel in the bunch called The Watchmen. Up to that point I had only heard of the book.I had never had a desire to read it until I saw it was on this top 100 list.
5-0 out of 5 stars The change...
Alan Moore, at the the point that this book was written, had already started changing the face of comics with his writing on Swamp Thing and the Marvelman and V for Vendetta series in Warrior magazine in England. This book, along with Frank Miller's Dark Knight added a certain darkness to the genre that had't been seen since the advent of the Comic Code Authority during Fredric Werthams campaign against comic books and what he considered their adverse affect on the youth of the time.
5-0 out of 5 stars =Perfection=
I bought this book 20 years after I read the first three comics.

2-0 out of 5 stars I expected more from Marvel
I don't know if it's me, but this book was is not what I expected. The artwork in my opinion was not that great. The stories were somewhat bland and flat. One story is completed made up of splash pages (all art) and with nothing written on it. You figure with Marvels stable of talented artist, they artwork would have been better. The only halfway decent story was the last one in which the media, along with government, manipulates the news in order to give the people war propaganda news in which the human are winning, and not disclosing the casualties nor suffering that are being endured by mankind. If you truly want to read a gripping graphic novel with amazing artwork, check out Pride of Baghdad. Now that's a great graphic novel.

2-0 out of 5 stars Opinion of a bigtime game/comic fan
Halo is a great game, and some of these artists have done other work which is awesome. But I have to say that this book didn't do it for me.I'm not a very analytical person when it comes to comics.I read them, and then I just ask myself if I had a good time.I didn't.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dark Knight - Absolute
I still remember with stunning clarity when Dark Knight burst (and it did burst, big and bloody) onto the comic book scene. I bought the original 4 issue Prestige Format mini-series, bought the soft-cover collection, bought the hard-cover (a rarity in those days), and was lucky enough to win a signed-and-number special edition of the hard-cover as well. Even had the poster.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gorgous art, great story, but the dialouge....
Was over the top with bitterness and hostility. It's a shame that the petty arguments between the members of the pride have to go through the entire contents of the book. It's so distracting you miss the point, which as I said, is a shame, because the real story behind it is very clever. The art is fantastic. Aside from a few "off" details, (I notice, I draw comics) The art itself is so good, you should buy this book just to look at it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The follies of man's war
The Pride of Baghdad is truly an amazing graphic novel. The artwork is fantastic, with a hint of orange tint throughout the book. Using the lions as unbiased observers during the U.S. invasion of Iraq, 4 lions escape when their zoo is blown to bits by U.S. bombs. Along their journey Baghdad, they encounter behemoth tanks that crush anything in it path, a pontificating turtle who is tired of human war that causes nothing but wanton death and destructions. When asked why the humans are fighting, the turtle does not know except that black poison (meaning oil) has killed many of his family and friend. We then see a page where a number of turtles have apparently died form the oil slick that seeped into the turtle's habitat. Very powerful and very gripping. Tired and hungry, the pride contemplates eating human flesh that is found in the streets of Baghdad. Eventually they confront a grizzly bear (the U.S.A?) that believes he is invincible by himself. But is taken down when the lions work as team to fight the bear. Finally, the lions reach the rooftop of a building to behold the beautiful horizon. I won't spoil the rest. Buy this book and enjoy a fine graphic novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Ain't Your Daddy's Lion King
Based on a true story, "Pride of Baghdad" is a very fictionalized account of a group of lions who escape from their zoo during the bombing of Iraq. What's true is that there was/is a war with Iraq, that the zoo was bombed, and that four lions escaped; the rest comes from the pens of writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Niko Hendrichon. To tell the story effective, Vaughan "Disneys" it by giving the animals a voice, but what starts off like another Lion King sequel soon becomes a rather dark and adult story about society and family.

1-0 out of 5 stars Something STINKS and it is not the zombies
WARNING! This book WILL offend a lot of fans.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's feeding time
A while ago, Mark Millar spun a tale during his run on Ultimate Fantastic Four in which an alternate reality was introduced in which Marvel's first family were zombified flesh eaters.Well, just imagine if pretty much all of the Marvel universe heroes and villains were the flesh eating undead, only they still had their powers and wits about them.Robert Kirkman, best known for his incredible Walking Dead series, knows a few things about zombies, and the yarn he spins here is one of the guiltiest pleasures you'll ever read.Magneto is seemingly the inly unaffected super-human on the planet, and he's face to face with Captain America, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Giant Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, Daredevil, Thor, and every other Marvel hero you can name who has been zombified.Soon enough, the Silver Surfer arrives to Earth foretelling of the coming of Galactus who plans to devour the planet. And oh yeah, guess who the Marvel Zombies plan on devouring too.Sometimes predictable, loaded with dark humor, and wonderfully drawn by Sean Philips; Marvel Zombies is a fleshy treat. From Spidey's self loathing ("I can't believe I ate my wife and aunt!") to Giant Man keeping Black Panther alive and sawing off a few parts to eat, Marvel Zombies may not be a Marvel MAX title, but it's definitely not for the squeamish.A big load of fun that's over too quick, Marvel Zombies is a worthy pick up for longtime Marvel readers looking to see the company's icons in a different, slightly decomposed light.

4-0 out of 5 stars Visually pleasing, short on story line
Let me preface my review by saying that outside of the Walking Dead series, I have read very little graphic novels/comic books since I was a kid.So if you are a passionate fan of the genre, you may not gain much incite from my review. If you are a fan of the Walking Dead series or zombie works in general, my review is pointed more at you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait....characters need some improvement.
I waited impatiently for #5. I was hooked from the first time I saw the cover. The social comentary is valid and some of the characters are well done. The need for firearms in society is positivley reinforced- a brave stand by the authors considering the current cultural war against guns. Certain characters are making decsions that are just plain stupid. This series is fiction, but was meant to examine how people would live long term. They would learn from their mistakes regarding security, and not go galivanting and compromise their group. Any less thought and the series will begin to be a pure horror series, with people being stupid just to keep the body count up. I am waiting for #6.

5-0 out of 5 stars The road goes ever onward
This ongoing saga continues and continues to impress.Rick and company have settled in at the prison and although there have been numerous traumas both related to the walking dead and to the interpersonal dynamics, the little community seems to be in fairly good shape nowadays.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait...
Well, it took forever for Image to release "Walking Dead 5: The Best Defense."Thankfully, it was worth the wait.

How do fantasy can be so marvellous? I can believe it...that's a paradox!! Sure. I BELIEVE IT. I found vol.2 a little bit better then vol. 1. But it is unavoidable to have both.
5-0 out of 5 stars solid creativity
Flight #2 is a great comics anthology that avoids the usual boring comic book cliches. There is great art here as well as intriguing story telling.
4-0 out of 5 stars Warm and fuzzy without being nauseating
I picked up "Flight Volume Two" at my library because it looked kind of cool. As soon as I started reading it I was totally absorbed and had to put it down on purpose in order to save some for later. The stories are kind of fairy tale-like, sweet and refreshing but not cheesy and nauseating. This isn't usually my thing, I guess I can be sort of grounded and my literary tastes reflect that. However, this book definately transcends that and appeals to the childlike, unjaded dreamer in me. Yeah, read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
For anyone thinking of buying this book, the title explains the content: Johnny is a homicidal maniac. And this isn't an 80's horror film kind of homicidal maniac (one who likes to kill whislt in silhouette), oh no; the tortures and murders are shown in detail. The art work is very different compared to pretty much any other art work you'll find. Jhonen's use of skinny-as-hell characters and geometric drawings make this truly unique. Some may not like it, but that's a personal preferance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comics most powerful villian at his best
What can I say Ensabuh Nur is simply amazing as the anti-christ of this book he actually feels that he is God in this Story alot of shocking suff goes on in this story guys who are usually bad are good and the ones who are usually good are bad plus this story arc gave birth to many characters that are around to this day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book 1 for fans... Book 2 in comparison
Most fans would rather they made this book vol. 2 and the second vol. sould have been first. But this is because everyone likes the other issues (and for good reason) more.
3-0 out of 5 stars First Half is great, but Vol. 2 should be read first...
The Age of Apocalypse was the high mark for the X-Men (and company) in the 1990s, and can in many ways be considered the climax of the X-Men saga.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Freek show stories.
Taking a line from his cancelled and poorly shown movie, Whedon and the Hacks at Dark Horse deliver up this rubbish, which is just that, Rubbish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect filler between TV series and movie
Quick admission: I'm a huge fan of the Firefly TV series and "Serenity".I think both were horribly underappreciated, and can't understand why they weren't more successful.
