5-0 out of 5 stars Uncomfortable...yet strangely tittilating....
Reading this graphic novel is like being thrown into the deep end of the pool: you aren't expecting such blunt and graphic realism, but once you get into it, it's hard to take your eyes away. Take care: this isn't remotely for a kid of any age. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ever read something that got under your skin?
Dave's art always makes my skin crawl, but it's also hypnotic -- the pages are interesting enough that I find myself skipping ahead without reading just to take in the landscapes that he's come up with (or the various fluids that might be dripping off his characters or buildings at any given time).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Versatile anthropomorphic fun
The twisted mind of Scandinavian writer and artist Jason is difficult to fathom. My first exposure to his work was the haunting "Hey, Wait...," a tragic story of a single moment that changed everything. Next was "Why Are You Doing This," in which a pivotal moment in one person's life had disastrous results.

Editorial Review

The Bradleys are like the Simpsons gone bad. A family of misfits, nerds, and losers, they leave a wake of disaster as they tromp through their middle-American lives. Keen wit and master of caricature Peter Bagge takes the expression of suburban angst and rage to new levels of comic cruelty with the volatile Bradley brood. As Mom goes back to work, the kids torture each other, Dad fixates on the television, and Sis pours out her heart to "Dear Diary," you'll find their folly universally, frighteningly funny. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Heh
This is a hilarious comic book. It's way meaner than the Simpsons. The stuff Bagge did in Neat Stuff was even meaner, so be aware that the Bradleys are his "nicer" stories. There isn't a happy ending or anything, thank goodness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stinging humor...
The Bradleys is the kind of comic book that makes you want more and more once you're through. Splendid characters (Bradley himself kix!) terrific dialogues, reads more like an illustrated hilarious sitcom than a comic. And it gets better: the drawing is superb (if that matters to you, but it matters to me) and the plot is never dissapointing. It's kinda like the simpsons with a different edge really. A classic!!! ... Read more

This book has tons of good stories, and some goodies you couldn't find in the magazines(lost covers, unused T-shirt designes). It even has a story in which Jaime appears, and you get to see his actual picture as he interacts with some of Gilbert's creations. I think this book is good, a satisfying conclusion to the Love & Rockets series.

5-0 out of 5 stars MILT GROSS: The Cartoonist's Cartoonist
I'm not sure what Milt Gross would have made of contemporary critics - and their claim that he was the father of the modern graphic novel. I'm guessing his reaction would have been akin to A HARD DAY'S NIGHT director Richard Lester's famous reply to MTV. (When the music network hailed him as the 'Father of Music Videos', Lester responded by insisting on a blood test!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome back, indeed, to a classic of goofiness
Everything the publisher says about "He done her wrong" is true, though it omits Goss's own description: "The Great American Novel. And not a word in it--no music, too."

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and revealed and well-observed
I may be biased, since I, too, was seven in '75, but I found this collection to be quite entertaining. There are several true stories from Ms. Forney's childhood each told through a series of 1-page comics. Each one includes loads of small details from the 70s that will be familiar tomost readers (from CB radios to Pop-Rocks to rainbows on everything to JudyBlume, and so on). Most of the amusement comes from the asides that theauthor makes while relating the stories (although they are all told fromher childhood perspective) and from the pre-cynical view that most of thecharacters have of the world. My favorite stories are the nudist campstory and the forced book report on Judy Blume's Forever.5-0 out of 5 stars A family album like no other
Ellen Forney's look at her childhood will make you laugh out loud as she lets you relive her (and your own!) best and worst moments... You can't askfor a better tribute to one's family than this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No other way to tell the tale
I have to detract from the previous reviews which focus on the the art and the story's original place as part of the over-burdened pantheon that is Marvel's X-Men comics' continuity.Instead I want to focus on the eloquence of a story that pits miracles againt hope and reality. Miracles may save a life, a village, a world but it cannot be counted upon. People have to sacrifice in order to get what they want. That's the universal truth that brings conflict to the relationship between a well meaning goddess and those who depend upon her good works to solve their real world problems. That's all that needs to be said about this classic reminder that people have to make their own miracles rather than depend on the omnipotent powers of gods.As an aside; this story was indeed part of an X-Men story involving a mutant named Storm. Marvel's editor at the time this was meant to see print almost 20 years ago was squeamish about presenting a story that he believed endorsed suicide as a viable option to an entire village's death. In fact it's a story about real faith and moving beyond your fear and false assurances. As for the art, well Barry did extensive re-drawing to make this work in a black and white. Color would have doubled the cost and the price of this beautiful book. Barry did more work to keep this book available instead of making minor changes and keeping the book so expensive that most would not have bought it. I guess that's the thanks he gets for his efforts. As for over-drawn, again the reviewer would prefer Barry did less? Barry drew this book in a style used by great illustrators like Edward Burne-Jones and Howard Pyle. I can find no fault with well rendered images and luscious line work.To each his own.I've given this book as a gift on three occasions and the recipients all wanted to know where there was more work by Barry Windsor-Smith? I happily passed on the information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Revised Story Really Misses Color and Original Character
This story was originally created by Barry Windsor-Smith over a decade ago as the third and final installment of the "Lifedeath" issues of MarvelComics' The Uncanny X-Men.Marvel's editors declined to publish the storyand Windsor-Smith revised the story to be an episode from the earlier lifeof Princess Adastra, one of the members of the Young Gods serial presentedin the STORYTELLER series.3-0 out of 5 stars Now I know what over-illustrated means
Barry Windsor-Smith was one of my favorite comic artists when I used to collect comics in the 1970s and 80s. His sense of detail steeped in Art Nouveau and Symbolism combined with strong storytelling pacing pulled me inanother world and lingered with me after I turned each page. His sense ofthe supernatural was always spellbinding to me.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comic Tour-de-force!
Without hesitation, I'd easily put Roger Langridge on my short list of the greatest all-around cartoonists alive today. He combines slapstick humor, nimble wordplay, Vaudeville, old-tyme comics and filters it through a modern sensibility (with liberal doses of Monty Python, the Goon Show, and the occasional bit of heartbreak and tragedy thrown in for good measure).

Editorial Review

Despite the popularity of the term "graphic novel" in reference to novel-length stories done in comics, comic books are not novels. Which is not to say that comics cannot have the sophistication and depth of a novel, but the best comics have qualities that separate them from straight prose. Mark Kalesniko's Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a huge waste of time and money!!
This is absolutely the strangest thing I've ever seen.It didn't make any sense at all and there is absoultely no connection Pete Duel. They should have named it "Strange Dog Boy" and let it go at that. But I guess if you like oddball comics you might have fun with it.Not a read for Pete Duel fans~!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not about Pete Duel but an amazing childhood story
Looks like Pete Duel fans are a bit peeved this book is only peripherally about their favorite television actor, but please don't let the negative comment stop you from reading this beautifully drawn tale of parental disconnection, emotional trauma and the often overlooked -- but very real -- pains that accompany childhood. It takes place around the time of Pete Duel's death and the title question, which frames the story, is posed by the young boy who's the book's main character. Kalesniko's spare, deceptively simple style is unique in modern comics, and his sense of visual pacing is one of the best I've seen in the form. The story is poignant (I sincerely hope it's not *too* autobiographical), but there's humor throughout as well. A treasure from one of the less well-known masters of the modern graphic novel. If you like it, be sure to check out Kalesniko's 264-page graphic novel "Mail Order Bride" as well, which is even more stunning.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not what it seems
Buyer Beware. This is not a story about Peter Duel.If you want to see this book, find someone who has it and look first.Do not spend money unless you want a comic book that has little to do with Mr. Duel, and a lot to do with the author. If I could give it negative star rating, I would. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The un-Garfield
This is a collection of one-page stories without text and unrelated to each other. The drawings are deceptively cute and more or less traditional. But the scripts are completely refreshing and read like something written in another planet. I don't know how to compare it to anything else, it is THAT original. The closest parallel I can find is to very old stuff like the Rarebit Fiend series by Winsor McKay or his Little Nemo, surreal and dream-like. But here there are no words, ever.
