Editorial Review

An emperor amasses an army of hundreds of thousands, drawn from twocontinents, to invade a third continent and conquer a tiny, divided nation. Onlya few hundred warriors stand against them. Yet the tiny nation is saved. Itsounds like the plot of a preposterous fantasy novel. It is historical fact. In481-480 B.C., King Xerxes of Persia raised forces in Asia and Africa and invadedGreece with an army so huge that it "drank rivers dry." Then they entered themountain pass of Thermopylae and encountered 300 determined soldiers fromSparta....Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!
This is a georgeous folio book.Frank Miller at his best.Dark and vivid. This book was out of print for a while, and it is an absolute treasure to own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Herodotus meets Sin Cityand gets whacked.
I was hoping that Miller would turn his talents from the dark side and we would see how well he could reproduce a Classical Epic. What we get is a blood splattered "300 Lacedaimons in the Hood".The Spartans are presented to be a buch of Homo erotic Rastafarians. The Persians rather than the Noble Middle Eastern Autocrats presented in their Art are drawn by Miller to resemble African American Gangstas with piercings and Skin art everywhere.I was looking for Xerxes to have a grill and whitewalls on his chariot.
5-0 out of 5 stars I will always think of this as 'Zoo.'What can I say?I'm special.
But do not miss this trade paperback. The story is as fine as you'll ever read, a tale as old as time. And the artwork is fantastic.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Freek show stories.
Taking a line from his cancelled and poorly shown movie, Whedon and the Hacks at Dark Horse deliver up this rubbish, which is just that, Rubbish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect filler between TV series and movie
Quick admission: I'm a huge fan of the Firefly TV series and "Serenity".I think both were horribly underappreciated, and can't understand why they weren't more successful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Serenity, an under-sold epic
While it is a little inconvenient to have to jump from a television series (thanks Joss Whedon and crew and cast, untimely cancelled, bad judgment Fox) to movie (thanks Universal) to comic book (thanks Dark Horse), it is rewarding to see more of the story accessible to Firefly/Serenity fans.It is amazing how few fans actually saw the series on television or the movie but became big fans from DVD sales. This is a story that touches the heroic, underdog spark in all of us.The comic book was appreciated for connecting the series to the movie and for explaining a couple of missing elements such as what happened to the blue hands guys. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best. Manga. Series. Ever.
Although I found the newly added translated FX sound block distracting. Does one really need to know "Shoo Shoo," "Ka-ching"... that's what the Katagana is for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Judo Lover
As a huge Berserk fan I have to say volume 13 is one of my favorit and one of the most important volumes in the series. However, I feel I can only give this Dark Horse release three out of five stars. I want to give it five, I realy do, but I can't.I love Berserk so much that to see this U.S. release, well it just does not do it justice. Dark Horse has recently resorted to using sound effect boxes that many times appear ON THE ARTWORK, a sin in not only the Berserk community but in all manga communtites in general. The translations of the sfx are for things like *Byoowww* from a horse and *lift* for when somebody lifts something (as if the actual artwork didn't show you that). All this and I'm not mentioning DH's weak translation job. So if your not strickly buying the U.S. releases I would urge you to look for this manga elswhere (there are other ways). But otherwise if the U.S. releases are all you got and you are an avid Berserk reader, then bite the bullit and enjoy it for what it's worth. ... Read more

I'm a Disneyphile and I've been coveting this book ever since I first heard about it. I've scoured Australian secondhand bookstores for years, hoping, by some miracle, that I might find an original copy tucked away in a dusty corner somewhere with a $2 sticker on it, but to no avail. [...].

5-0 out of 5 stars The end . . . and new beginnings
Endgame is a denouement, a figurative and literal cleaning up and sorting out, the final chapter in Dark Horse's Clone Wars series. That doesn't mean there's nothing but talking heads and exposition. On the contrary, there's plenty of action in three stories about choice and consequence. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Penny Arcade = Great Web-Comic
Penny Arcade is a comic that has been around for almost a full decade now, so it is nice that this year they are finally releasing a series of books that bring the comics into our homes without the need for a computer and internet, excluding how you buy the book itself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of a great Webcomic
Penny Arcade isn't my favorite webcomic (that honor goes to PVP), but it's up there, and I'm very happy that Dark Horse comics has begun reprinting the entire run of the series. This second volume collects all of the strips from 2001. Holkins and Krahulik don't use many long-running storylines or, for that matter, any continuity at all, so you can't really expound upon the stories here. Holkins also includes some of his vintage blog posts, detailing stories such as how a rat infestation led to his eviction and tne now-classic "Walnut Saga," which are amusing stories as their own right. The strips are as sharp and clever as ever, without any of the early strips where they were still trying to find their groove, such as those we found in volume one. The book is backed by images from the Penny Arcade card game and some unpublished concepts from Holkins and Krahulik to fill out the book. Some of the stuff at the end feels kind of like padding, but it's still a fun read. ... Read more

Haven't bought a comic in a while. Hollywood, having finally admited to running out of ideas has turned to the great and ultra-cool comics (Hellboy, Sin City, V for Vendetta, etc) in order to make some dough, has once again sparked my interest in graphic novels. I bought this one based soley on the art and was not dissapointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too epic for it's own good, but still pure Frank Miller and pure Sin City
Frank Miller's seventh, and for now final, volume in his highly influential Sin City library, is the most ambitious and epic story in the series.Hell and Back stars Wallace, a decorated war veteran and struggling artist who, on a chance encounter, saves an actress named Esther from killing herself.Once romance starts to bloom between the two, Wallace finds himself in over his head in a conspiracy that goes well beyond Basin City, and he'll do anything to get her back. There's more to the story than just that brief synopsis, as Miller attempts to reach new heights with his storytelling, but it doesn't reach the heights of some of Miller's previous Sin City stories.Hard Goodbye and That Yellow Bastard were undoubtadly the best Sin City stories (and some of Miller's best stories period), but we never feel for Wallace the way we did for Marv and Hartigan, and we never really pull for the relationship between Wallace and Esther the way we did for Marv and Goldie/Wendy and Hartigan and Nancy. That being said, Hell and Back features plenty of memorable moments, including Miller's usual cinematic artwork, and the tripped out halucination scenes (featuring cameos aplenty from characters you wouldn't expect, including Captain America, Elektra, Big Guy & Rusty the Robot, the ED-209, and Hellboy) are worth the price of admission alone. All in all, Hell and Back is a more than worthy title in the Sin City saga, but you can't help but get the feeling that Miller was reaching too far.Despite that though, you can do far, far worse than Hell and Back.

5-0 out of 5 stars The final hoo-rah!
Wallace is a war hero in the Vietnam war, who began lending his vastly artistic talents as services to an adult magazine publisher. But he didn't like the job and quit, loosing the money and falling even more behind on the rent on his apartment. While aimlessly cruising on, for once, a cool night in Basin City, he foils a suicidal attempt by a mystery woman named Esther, and the two fall in love. But while on a date the following night, Wallace is drugged and Esther is kidnapped by unidentified attackers and taken to an unknown location, where vile experimentations are performed on humans. After regaining movement in his arms and legs, Wallace, with a drawn picture of Esther, files a missing persons claim to Detective Liebowitz and the corrupt Basin City police force, after which, Wallace finds himself in the middle of the whole, mysterious, sick operation.
4-0 out of 5 stars An odd place to take a hiatus.

5-0 out of 5 stars That "Bastard"
Frank Miller gave noir a new, gritty face with the "Sin City" series, and his favorite is reportedly "That Yellow Bastard." It's another story where a hardened man goes down a dark path, regardless of harm to himself -- and Miller's exceptional art and storytelling are in their prime here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Miller outdoes himself!
On another hot night in Basin City, John Hartigan, a gruff and cynical, but big-hearted veteran police detective with an indestructible sense willpower, is working his final case before his mandatory retirement, caused by a bad heart. An 11-year-old girl, Nancy Callahan, is out there in Sin City somewhere, in the hands of the child rapist son of the insidious Senator Roark. Though Hartigan almost dies while rescuing Nancy as well as putting Roark Jr. down, seemingly for good, the hero cop learns the worst has yet to come when Senator Roark himself visits him in the hospital, promising Hartigan even more grief to come, as revenge for crippling his rotten son...
5-0 out of 5 stars Hartigan -- Finally, a hero worthy of Sin City's villains
Frank Miller's "Sin City" series has set a gold standard for the graphic novel in recent years. Not only does Miller's stark black-and-white artistry elevate the genre, it suits its hardboiled world to a T.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding.
Frank Miller, the very instant he entered the comics industry, became an instant inspiration to future comic book writers, and went as far to revolutionize the entire industry. It was Miller, along with Alan Moore, who made comics cool for adults in the 80s, when the whole "funnies" concept of sequential art in comic books (politically correctly now known as "graphic novels") was beginning to die out. He breathed new life into Daredevil, he showed us the very darkest side of the Batman, and now he goes solo on his own pulp fiction series, "Sin City". "Sin City", easily Miller's best work to date, highlights Miller's talents not just as a storyteller, but a visual artist as well. Miller paints in big broad strokes, favoring a loose-panel page structure and multiple splash panels, and he does this spectacularly. Miller's knowledge and command of his characters create an extraordinarily entertaining read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miller takes no prisoners.
A direct follow-up from what happened in "A Dame to Kill For," Dwight, with his new face, is now dating Shellie, one of the waitresses at Kadie's, the strip club, coming in between Shellie and her ex boyfriend Jackie Boy. When Jackie Boy and his gang roughs Shellie up at her apartment and heads into Old Town afterwards, Dwight trails Jackie Boy down, altering Gail and Miho of the approaching danger. Things get out of hand, and Miho slices everyone up. The big twist is when Dwight searches through Jackie Boy's wallet that he discovers he was a police officer, thus destroying the little "truce" the Old Town prostitutes have with the police force...unless Dwight can dispose of the body first, and then rescue Gail, who has been kidnapped by an angry, revenge-seeking Manute...

3-0 out of 5 stars Yikes!
Oh my goodness! I bought this book for a little 7 year old girl. She loves "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Corpse Bride" - and she loves scary stories and such - so I thought this would be perfect. I gave one to my 11 year old too. Well - that was last Christmas - and just last night (it's now June) my 11 year old decided to read the book. This book is NOT appropriate for a 7 year old or even and 11 year old. There are blatant references to sex. How emabarressing! I have to apologize to the little girl's Mom. They probably read the book six months ago and thought I was a sick-o. So - just a warning - in case you think this is a great gift for a kid - it's not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great - even if you aren't a "Buffy" fan!
All right, we know that all you Buffy fans love this book (hello, Joss Whedon is GOD and all that he does, is perfection).HOWEVER, if you are NOT a Buffy fan, or even a Joss Whedon fan - you will STILL love this!
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Cool
Is this THE future, or one possible future? In any case, this is a fantastic story telling the return of the slayer in the future. After all demons were banished from the Earth (I assume by Buffy), the slayer legacy ended. We no longer had a need for them. While Season 7 of Buffy saw new slayers called all over the world, in Fray, the world is back down to one slayer.Demons and vampires are back, and Fray has one hell of a battle on her hands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Collection
If you're looking at buying this, you know what Sin City is.This collection is an oversized printing with thicker paper and darker inks. It's a very high-quality product and at ~$25 an issue, not a bad deal.I could only give it 4 stars because I noticed that at least 2 pages of story are missing from the second book as compared to the trade paperback.I don't know if those pages were added to the paperback version and not in the original comics, thus not used here, or if they were removed for some other reason, but since they are my two favorite pages in the book, I'm a tad disappointed.I'm not sure if anything else is missing; those two pages were all I noticed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Frank Miller fans...
The only complaint I've heard about this collection is the lack of bonus materials. While I do agree with the argument, I believe you still get your money's worth and more in this product.
4-0 out of 5 stars The size matters!!
If there is a series that deserves an oversized format, it is SIN CITY. Point. No question about it. All that fantastic B&W art of Frank Miller blows away my mind every time I open up those books. But there is a problem: NO EXTRA STUFF!No sketch gallery,no unused pages or something like that.Anyway, the final design of the slipcase follows the art direction of the entire series!Take it! ... Editorial Review

Because of a shocking ending to the first Sin City book, many people wondered how successful Frank Miller could be with future tales of his no-holds-barred city noir. Enter Dwight McCarthy, a clean-living photographer who tries to avoid trouble because he knows what he's capable of. His tactics don't do him much good when a girl from his past (who he can't say no to) shows up and professes her love for him. When he finds out she's in way over her head, it looks as though trouble has found him. What's going to happen? You guessed it: people get hurt. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Graphic Novel to Kill For
Light up a weird Russian cigarette and let this tale in Frank Miller's Sin City consume you.Bring out the beast. As far as graphic novels goes, this is one of the best. And most likely the best in the Sin City epic.Starring Dwight McCarthy (before he got that new face) as the self-restraining photographer stumbles onto an attempted murder between a police officer and an escort of Old Town. Then the hopeless romantic receives word that another woman needs his help.Problem is, Eva is no one he wants to help.As what may often happen to every hopeless romantic, Dwight's will is corrupted by an ex-lover.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another hot night in Basin City
As Frank Miller's second volume in his Sin City library begins, we are introduced to photographer Dwight McCarthy; a man with a shady past he's trying to forget which comes crashing back when he receives a visit from his old flame Ava Lord who begs him to save her. While there's far more going on here than what lies on the surface, A Dame to Kill For never hits that all so special mark like the Hard Goodbye did.Miller's artwork is still superb and cinematic, but we don't really feel for Dwight here like we did for Marv in the Hard Goodbye (who makes an excellent appearance here in a supporting role). For those who are more familiar with the excellent film adaptation than the graphic novels, this is a prequel to the Big Fat Kill and it features many familiar characters; such as Gail, Manute, Shelly, Miho, and twins Goldie and Wendy. All in all, A Dame to Kill For isn't the best volume in Miller's influential Sin City library, but you'll rarely find graphic novels these days that get much better than this.

5-0 out of 5 stars More kills and thrills.
Miller works his magic again in the second yarn of the "Sin City" saga, "A Dame to Kill For." This time around, we find Dwight McCarthy, a down-on-his-luck loser who, ever since the girl of his dreams, Ava, left him to marry another man, can make a living only by taking lewd photographs of adulterers for his greasy boss. But then Ava suddenly returns begging for Dwight's help, saying her husband abuses her frequently, and may eventually kill her. Dwight, still sore, refuses. But when a large man called Manute takes Ava back to the Sacred Oaks, the Basin City "rich peoples'" home, Dwight learns everything is not quite what it seems and is lured into trap, orchestrated by Ava.

3-0 out of 5 stars Artwork's Better, Story's Okay, But Overall: Still Lacking
This out of print and ultra-rare graphic novel, 'Tales of the Jedi: Redemption', is in my opinion a step forward from the previous 'Tales of the Jedi' (TOTJ from here on) storylines/graphic novels in terms of artwork. Actually, a step forward is incorrect: the artwork has progressed by leaps and bounds! However, as is usual with Star Wars, the storyline is the same ol', same ol' with little to offer readers and newcomers (although SW nuts and fanatics would eat this up, or anything George Lucas does for that matter).
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book and a fitting end to a great series!
This interesting book is the final book in the Knights of the Old Republic series. The series is a collection of graphic novels that takes the reader to the Old Republic, thousands of years before the events of The Phantom Menace.
2-0 out of 5 stars good art
this features the best looking art in the tales of the jedi dark horse books, but like the others the story isn't really that great. blah ... Read more
